Mangaka doing everything themselves is largely a myth. Most industry level manga creators have an assistant if not multiple. So they are working on a team. The difference between American and Japanese comics is that in American comics everyone is typically credited, whereas with manga the main author is usually the name on the project.

Yeah, I forgot to point that out. I just tweeted about it too. When I answered the question, I was mostly thinking about starters because of the target audience. But yeah, you're right - most mangaka that are getting decently paid have enough money to hire at least a single assistant.

Yeah. I see a lot of younger artists with unrealistic expectations on production schedules, and I often take the time to mention this to them. They often don’t know or don’t take into account that many, if not all of their favorite creators, work with a team of artists. They’ll work themselves into exhaustion trying to mirror the Shonen jump release model, and some I know have had medical visits because they became sick from the stress. So it’s always important that point is made. Yea, assistants have been a big factor in the industry since AT LEAST the Tezuka era. As I’m sure you would know, he popularized many of the mainstream characteristics of manga and anime. One of those characteristics was working with assistants. Cool interview 👍👍

My Parents say that by the time it's like 2040-2030 manga will be AI-generated. Mangaka definitely wouldn't use pencil and paper. What's the point in investing in it? I mean I do have the Passion for it, I really want to put my story out there.

Do you want to have the same career path and lifestyle as your parents? If yes, then follow their advice. If you want a different life then follow the advice of people who’s living the lifestyle you want for yourself. (Aka if you want to be a mangaka then listen to an actual mangaka’s advice)

Here's the thing that differentiates mangaka from the Western artist. They actually bother to use the new tools. So what if it's going to have AI? You can bet that AI will be one trained only on the mangaka's own artwork. You can also bet they know the artist fundamentals that'll make the art look natural. They can already achieve that with digital, and they also bother to make their own artist assets. No tech will change what they accomplish. On the topic of ai, open source blank slate ai exists. You can look for it and train it on only your art. It won't be perfect, but it'll speed up the process. Normal Artists have a leg up over AI prompters. With no knowledge on the art fundamentals AI prompters won't know how to make it look natural.

Physical artwork sells. Comic artists can make thousands of dollars and some millions (Frank Frazetta) with original prints. Also, in an increasingly digital age it is easier to show proof of original and call out plagiarism by having physical artwork. Hopefully you’d never run into that scenario but it’s true.
