Manufactured sand is angular while most river sand is smooth. Crushed rock and crushed sand interlock and help form stable bases. In our area, crushed sand is a byproduct of making crushed stone (gravels). It should be even better in concrete than river sand. When you buy 3/4 minus for example, the fines are actually crushed sand. Some places call the crushed sand 'rock dust' and are used under pavers for example. In this video, when finished sand is being discharged to a pile, the angle of the slope is quite steep. That is because the sand particles being angular interlock. Angle of Repose increases.

@@wujeyne4744 glad the information was helpful. I was a Landscape Architect for years. Combine design, construction management, supervision. Studied Civil Engineering in College along with L Arch. In my area, mostly river deposited rocks, gravels, sands. Some is sold as 'washed' and others as 'crushed'. Was always careful to specify right kind of rock.

In my area the manufactured sand does not meet ASTM C-33 standards which is the spec for most cements, asphalt, and other applications. This state DOT has modified concrete standards to allow the use of Manufactured sand to save on construction cost since C-33 sand is locally rare.
@larrymcever4601 Жыл бұрын
@John Evans No manufactured sand is excellent. It just does not meet an arbitrary standard for gradation applicable to river sand. The restriction for fines passing the 400 screen is more restrictive for Georgia Cement Sand than the ASTM C-33 standard (less than 5% for Cement sand and less than 10% for ASTM C-33). That is accomplished by washing but the Cement sand will not grade within the slot limits for ASTM C-33 for some of the internal gradations. See Steven's comments which are informative.

@@nilesbutler8638 most of our plants can crush about 3,500 ton per day. It is crushing about 4 different size products at the same time. The last crushing plant we bought wss around a million dollars. Then add a few haul trucks at 1/2 a million each and a few front end loads and they can cost as much as a million each.
