How to use two simple shop made jigs to create wonderful wooden boxes from pieces of crown molding. these boxes make great gifts, require very little material, and sell well at craft fairs. these make perfect little Christmas presents or presentation boxes.

I made a couple of these back in 1998. I took Wood magazine. I still have the jigs but they look pretty rough now. Your video makes the job so much easier. Fantastic explanations and the video is worth a thousand words. Great job. Pay no attention to any negative comment. Thanks.

@@kennethpaulwoodworking6404 No problem - I thought it is some setting on my end. Since Photography is my another hobby, until you can get a better camera, I can suggest you try smaller aperture setting for a better image. Of course that will require adequate lighting to compensate for smaller aperture but in general will help with sharpness. Just try and see if it helps. TC

Hi Ken, I'm in the process of making the jigs, so thanks. I went thru your video again to determine the golden ratio(1:1.618) and your 9-5/8 X 6-1/8 seem a bit off? I did the math using the 6-1/8 measurement and came up with 9-15/16 or 9.91025. I'm sure it doesn't matter much but thought you might like to know, so thanks again for the video.

Great idea for boxes. Your tips and exact measurements are going to be a huge help for those of us who are buying some crown most riki tik. Unfortunately the quality of both audio & video wasn’t great. You need to make sure the camera is focuses. Do Not depend on auto focus. If you can allows for manual focus def use that. Buy a quality wireless mic you wear on your shirt with a windsock on it. Cell phone audio is terrible. Look forward to your next project.

When making the top, since you know the angle before you cut the pieces for the top. Wouldn't it just be safer to cut the grove for the top while the pieces are long first? Rather than after you make the smaller ends? You don't need the ends to be cut before check that angle. I think that when I make these, I'll do that step first, then cut the top pieces to size. Great video by the way. You have a new subscriber. Thank you and God bless.
@kennethpaulwoodworking6404
@kennethpaulwoodworking6404 Ай бұрын
Yes, after the bottom is built you can find the angle you need for the slot and pre cut your crown molding. Just remember that when you set the saw blade angle for the top you reference your bevel square against the fence and the bade, not against the table saw top and the blade like you do on the bottom slot. Ken

I am half way through your project. Have to backtrack a lot but I would never be able to follow the downloaded 1998 Wood magazine directions (I tried but was really not clear on a lot of parts) . So far really clear on your directions. I think if I can master this I will have to make my own crown moulding out of some cheaper wood because 1 piece of ****ALEXANDRIA MOULDING 4-1/8" x 1/2" x 8' MDF DecoSmart Crown Moulding**** here in Eastern Canada is $30.20. One box leaves me inches of scrap matrerial so each box would cost me $30.00 in material.. Gotta find something a lot cheaper to make a box with because I cant see me selling any boxes with a cost of $30.00 anfd putting some labour into it.. Great Project though, just gota find or make cheaper material to build with. Great, great video. Will let you know my final build results

Good luck on your boxes, I would like to clarify one section of my video, when cutting the slot on the pieces for the top of the box for the 1/8” plywood, you set the angle of the saw blade holding the bevel square against the fence and the blade, not against the saw table top and the blade the way it was done on the slot for the bottom of the box. I buy my crown moldings from discount cabinet warehouses if there are any near you, if not, try a local building contractor to see if you can buy their scrap off cuts. Ken

@kennethpaulwoodworking6404

How do you keep the lid on the box from falling off
@kennethpaulwoodworking6404
@kennethpaulwoodworking6404 Ай бұрын
The inside lip of the base is sloped in, on this box it was 1/8” . The top of the box has a lip that slopes out, so the top and bottom register against each other. If you wanted a more secure top it would be easy to add small hinges or just some rare earth magnets. Ken
