Yeah, make a slurry then it will gradually thin out as you add the water. Applies to the kitchen as well, as I make roux and gravy like that too, lol

Can I ask how you measure out the 5 grams of pigment powder? Do you use a digital food scale to weigh or a measuring spoon? If a measuring spoon which increment is 5 grams? Would it be one quarter (¹/4 teaspoon)? Do you ship to the USA on Etsy? I would love to try your paints. They look gorgeous. Also when you go to refill the pans for the second time after they had time to cure and dry do you have to make a whole new batch again for the second pour? Thanks for your help.
@crafterine
@crafterine 3 жыл бұрын
I get small mini sachets of mica powder, each of 5g. You can use those tiny and precise weighing scale for smaller quantities too. I haven't really done a teaspoon measurement since each pigment has a different density :). Thank you so much for checking out my shop. At the moment, I ship only within Europe, but worldwide shipping is in my to-do list :). While filling in for the next layer, sometimes I use the Pigment that I have leftover, for earth Pigments, I would mull them fresh again for topping the pans ☺️. I hope this helps

Thank you so much. If you don't get out all the big particles of pigment would they act as granulation?
@crafterine
@crafterine Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately granulation doesn’t work this way. Mulling helps break down the pigment and it’s essential to get smooth paint out of it (or the artist who paints with it would find pigment breaking out on the canvas). However, granulation is a property of the pigment itself. Some granulate and some don’t (no matter how long you mull or not mull). I hope it makes sense 😅

With 5g I can make up to 2 half pans , and there's a little bit of pigment left to make dot cards.

That’s normal if it’s a food-grade gum arabic powder. I use the same sometimes. If you wanna get the honey coloured binder, you would need to purchase artist-grade gum arabic powder 😄

Yes, clove oil is added by a lot of paint makers to preserve the paints and to extend it's shelf life. I'm not sure about vinegar though, if it works for your, please let us know in the comments :)

The most commonly used preservative would be clove oil, or even thyme essential oil. If you do not like the smell of it, you can always use sodium benzoate.

What kind of preserves can you add?
@crafterine
@crafterine 2 жыл бұрын
For the preservatives, you can use : 1. Thyme oil or clove oil 2. Sodium benzoate 3. Oxgal (non-vegan) 4. Synthetic Ox Gall (vegan) These are optional additives, however if you are planning on doing it commercial, it's better to add some preservatives :)

How long do the first layer takes to dry?
@crafterine
@crafterine Жыл бұрын
It took approximately 2 weeks for me. But it depends on the pigment, the amount of binder that’s added and also honey. Too much honey makes it sticky and dries super slow.

Hello! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I just started making my own watercolors, they looked dry (I kept them for 2/3 days to dry, then I put them in a closed glass container). After a while they started to soften again (even the ones I've done about a month ago), as if they had either absorbed moisture or perhaps the innermost layers were oozing. Has it ever happened? Where and how can I store them to keep them dry? Thank you!
@bloodmoonmonsters990
@bloodmoonmonsters990 2 жыл бұрын
The texture and hardness of the paint can depend on the amount of honey (and maybe glycerin. Honey and glycerin tend to attract moister) you put in, if you add honey into the paint (not the honey included in the binder) it tends to stay more wet. For storing I would recommend some type of box with air flow or one that is not completely sealed off
