A look at my table saw molding head cutters that I've had for a long time and use to make different kinds of molding. Learn how to make bead molding on the table saw by first using the molding head cutter and then ripping the molding to width with the table saw blade. Making molding is a lot of fun and saves you time and money at the lumberyard. It also allows you to make custom molding for your woodworking or furniture making project.

Just finally got a molder head, and it literally "paid for itself" the first time I used it, and it wasn't even that big of a project! Being able to make custom molding, using off cuts of the same wood used for the rest of the project, is great. Way WAY less expensive than buying stain grade hard wood molding, and no worries about irregularities in how it takes a finish. You can also do things with a molding head that you just can't do with a router or shaper. Now I need to figure out how many more molding heads I need, so I don't have to swap blades so much.

Always was interested in making mouldings but the machine is out of my league. Have seen it done on a router table but never with a table saw. Really interesting. Thanks. Going to look for that commercial as well.

I really liked the quick shot of you unplugging the tablesaw before changing the blade, Jon - subtle, but an important message. My finger is still healing after tearing it to shreds on my tablesaw, so I'm particularly conscious of that stuff now! The commercial looks great - really beautifully filmed, and a lovely advert for your channel too - I'd have worried if it wasn't well produced. Great stuff, Toby

During the ongoing remodel of my house I have saved enough on molding to pay for a table saw and router. With even simple quarter round going for around a buck a foot, one of those three blade molding cutters are a must have for anyone who knows how to use one. I got mine at a yard sale ten years ago and the blades are still good.

Have the very same Sears mold cutters. Have not used much. Had made some bead molding JUST like what you made and I went out to buy a router bit. Wish I would have of thought of using what I had. Thanks again..

I used to think about getting a cutter head for my tablesaw before I had to sell all the tools in my shop. I did however build the blanket chest you did in one of your videos before I sold everything. Well sort of, I ended up using it as a hand tool chest. Nice video Jon.

I have have that Aluminium moulding head. I was made by Richards in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I used it on a radial arm saw. You used it with the spindle in the vertical position and with a special guard It worked very well.

I think it's a bit funny that at the big woodworking company where I used to work we also had these EXACT same 2 cutter heads for occasional use on the table saw. For most jobs, however, we had a specially built moulding machine (we milled our own baseboards and crown mouldings, as well as curved mouldings for archways and windows).

Sears used to have molding cutters that came in either one or three cutter versions - I bought a one-cutter model nearly 40 years ago. Don't need it often, but at the time it seemed like something that would be useful. Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith, NY has a 19th century molding machine that they used to make specialty moldings for architectural restoration work. The neat thing is that the machine is driven by belts from a line shaft powered by a waterwheel.

The things have been around as long as I can remember. Once you get the arbor unit you can get hundreds of different blade shapes. And there are companies who will grind one special for you. Mine is a Craftsman made around 1946 that I got at a yard sale. The original blades are still good. With even simple molding running north of a buck a foot you can save the cost of a really good table saw remodeling one house.

Around here we call it glass bead. Im not exactly sure where the "glass" plays in, but i have found that profile at local lumber yards.

Thanks Jon. I was looking at these sets the other day after watching Norm Abrams use one on his saw for a grandfather clock case. Pretty nifty. And Craftsman still makes a set, as well as many others. I've seen them in 3 cutter, 5 cutter and 7 cutter combos, depending on how fancy you want to get. Stay safe, and cheers for the video

Great Job John. I love watching your videos when time allows. Having access to your knowledge is truly amazing and I wouldn't be half the carpenter I am without The KZfaq Nation. That being said, I have a couple of those moulding sets and they are easily found on ebay. I suggest paying close attention to the type you chose cause the older models had one blade.

Hi Jon, I have the same Sears molding head, but I think mine may be a little older and surely a little more beat up LOL. One thing that I like to use the molding head for is to match the wood that I am using. Lumber yards don't have a god selection of hardwood moldings and definitely not in exotics!

My sticker looks good! Got yours too! Thanks! I owned one of those molding cutters (it came with a huge lot of CraigsList items)... I gotta' admit, those removable cutters were a bit scary... so I sold it. I just pictured those cutters flying off the cutter-head. Glad to know you've had yours for years without problems. Thankfully I sold it to a friend... he can loan it back to me. :-) Congrats on the commercial. Great video all around Jon!

Pretty darn cool commercial. Glad they used you in that. Question, how wide is that mold cutter? I would like to get it for myself. My table saw has a dado plate (works with any 13/16" X 8" diameter stacked dado), is that wide enough or do i have to make my own?

Corob Cutters sells the heads and knives now. I think they made the knives for Delta back in the day. I'm sure e-bay is full of those moulding heads too, but Craftsman knives are not interchangeable with Delta knives.
