I've been following for the last couple of months and I just wanted to say how grateful I am for your knowledge sharing! Really amazing. I've NEVER been the person anyone would think would write a book...but I'm in my 40s and I'm my mom's caregiver (Dementia) and I've been looking for a different creative outlet (I have my own web design agency) and I've been writing mini stories for a couple of years (nothing I would ever share - ugh a roo)...and I have recently thought that I'd like to go ALL IN and write a book. This is not a book I may ever share, it's more something really enjoyable for me. I love creative work and this is really different for me and kinda exciting. Anyway, I'm fucking babbling! So, THANKS - I think you're pretty great!

Wonderful advice! I am currently struggling with where I'm supposed to start and get discouraged with all of this information but you managed to put it into a comprehensive list for me! I'm on the fourth chapter of my first fantasy novel and wanted to keep it simple and start with e-book sales and see what happens from there, and I'll start putting this advice to use, too! Thank you! Quick question if anyone can answer though: is it hard to become a virtual assistant, freelance writer, or ghostwriter without prior experience or college education? Because I have neither and I search Indeed often for gigs like that, but I can never find anything I would "qualify" for because most of those require a number of years experience or a bachelor's degree. What are your thoughts on having a day job on the side of writing or even having it as your main income? For me it seems easier to live off a 9-5 and write in your spare time
@jflsdknf
@jflsdknf Жыл бұрын
I've been writing on the side since 2016, went full time with it this year. It is 100% easier to live off a 9-5. Even if you manage to get lucky with a hit, the income will quickly fade and you have to keep cranking out material. It's never-ending stress and uncertainty about the success of your next release, meeting deadlines, and delegating tasks. That applies to a lot of entrepreneurial jobs, but I've learned that feeling is not for me. I value the certainty of a paycheck or I constantly feel stressed. Plus the volume you have to churn out is draining too, and many other factors.

Lots of writers do that permanently. Many even swear it makes them write better because of the variety of mental demands.
@user-fk8zw5js2p
@user-fk8zw5js2p Жыл бұрын
I have done both: I've written full time for a year with no steady employment and written on the side of working 9-5. I prefer the writing on the side mainly because I found that I had a lot more writer's block when I didn't have a 9-5 job and tried to write all day every day. On the other hand, there have been plenty of days and even weeks where I've been too tired or burnt out from the 9-5 or getting sick to write anything, so I guess I'm wasting a lot of time I could use writing either way. At least with the 9-5 I can always pay the bills regardless of how much I'm able to write which will fill in the gaps between publishings.
@JennaMoreci
@JennaMoreci Жыл бұрын
honestly, I think this is the norm! A 9-5 can come with medical benefits that writing never will. I don't have or want a 9-5, but I think it's perfectly fine and normal to want one regardless of how your books are selling.
@carterwillis6624

Couldn’t focus personally. Got a job 2 weeks on two weeks off. With half of the year, I can focus to just being a writer. The 9-5 for me was a 6-5 and made no money, every day after work I was exhausted.

In my country ghostwriting is illegal. Essentially you can not get rid of copyright. You can give your work to someone else and don't earn anything, but it will be still yours. Forever. Though many folks are still ghostwriting, avoiding taxes and so on.

Don’t know who will relate to this, but I didn’t want to be a “starving artist”, but still wanted as much time as possible to write without work bogging me down. So I got a job where I work half the year; two weeks on, two weeks off. Beginner job, pays 87k yearly. Hard to write at work but when I’m home, all the time in the world, and I’m not starving. Good to know, number of years ago I tried adding writing to my resume but never was able to achieve more then a few bucks at a time at different sites an this was NEVER the only or primary way to make decent money I'd probably be a writer at least as one of my major income streams if I could just get some these things going.. who wouldn't love the comfort, security an warmth (especially this time year) of they own place. An be effectively working at same time too at any time they choose... Guess can't interest the wife in a Jenna "Cyborg" underwear line...

I'd say don't worry about it too much. I'm just starting out my writing career more than a decade later in life than you. You can build up a platform slowly. You might want to check out the book 'Newsletter Ninja' because social media sites change every so often and emails are more effective than you think. (Do be aware of spam laws though. You probably need a physical address to send from. Some states let you use a PO box. Convert Kit (a newsletter service) lets their customers use theirs and customers does include using the free version.

I would say to just take your time and focus on becoming friends with writers online. Tumblr is a great place to start. Im in a couple of writing discords too. When you become less busy, you can dedicate more time to building a strong intentional platform. But as a college student, I’ve seen a lot of high school writers (including myself) become workaholics trying to be successful writers, just to realize later on that there is no rush and things happen naturally if you’re just patient and consistent.

SIIIIIIGH, money. I'm a freaking Communist, so the market economy is BS. BUUUUT, I live in a Capitalist country. Thanks, Canada. Seriously, though, my bestie and I have a JOINT New Year's resolution to hold one another's feet to the fire on our writing, so this MIHT actually apply to me this year. Alright, intelligent woman, what ya got for me? 1. AH! ECON TERMS! Really, ,though, even my mother has suggested I make money as a freelancer while I'm working on my books. She says you don't make a lot from it, but he benefit is the short-term contract style of the work. If you don't like your employer at the moment, don't worry: you'll be done with them in a few months. So, like, hop from thing to thing? I would NOT recommend magazine publishing, though. My bestie has done it, and I think the most she ever made on a job was $20. She didn't expect to make more, and it was for fun, not for work, but yeah, not a good idea for real money. 2. Snort, yeah. HERE is my platform. No, literally, KZfaq is my platform. If I'ma make a website, though, can I just edit for people? Hell, I do it for my job NOW, so why not? I'm not using Wix, though, because f*ck all their ads on here. 3. Audio, please. And BRAILLE. No, I'm not kidding. I'm, like, 90% blind, and trust me, my community appreciates it when books are in both of those formats. I think it's fairly rare to get any post-2000s book in Braille, though, which sucks. It IS a myth that our Braille literacy rate is below 50% worldwide, though. Someone made that up, and it wasn't us. And yay, Jenna makes the disabilities point, too! Love ya. 4. How high can tiers go on Patreon? The only person I support on there, I do believe his highest tier is $15, but he's very modest and doesn't think much of his own work. he SHOULD, but he doesn't. 5. This has been going on forever, and while I hate ads on KZfaq--who doesn't?--I DO like supporting people, so just wait five seconds for the 'skip ad' button. Woot. 6. You know what's weird? This HAS to be a scam, obviously, but I've been seeing pop-up ads in comments sections on bigger channels from freaking Telegram .FYI, Telegram is an Alt Right cesspool. No one I follow on KZfaq would be on Telegram. I keep having to report these things, though I don't think I've ever seen them on your channel, Jenna. More with gamers, and people who post content either about politics or religion. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and why it's happening? 7. Yay, stuff! No really, some of the stuff people sell is really cool. 8. Who ya gonna call? GHOST WRITER! Really, though, I probably would do this, too, though my first choice, as aforementioned, would be editing, since I already do it for a living. 9. See above. 10. So, they're the people who help you boost your platform? Cool.

Jenna, it's possible to make some money I'll say it's possible to make probably $10,000 or $5,000.00 from royalties and of course the publisher and agent will take there half but with that said I don't know how the h*ll authors like J.K. Rowling, Stephen King, Danielle Steel, James Patterson, and so on. I don't know how they became a millionaire and billionaire just from writing books. Even if your book become a movie or TV show a film producer will only pay you $30,000.00 or $50,000.000 and the publisher and agent will take there half of the money. I see authors like you who became an author the normal way by earning not so much that the real life of an author, but authors like Danielle Steel, Stephen King, James Patterson and J.K. Rowling that's not the real life of an author because yes we will earn $5,000.00 and $10,000.00 but we will never earn millions of dollars and billions of dollars like these big time authors do. I honestly think Danielle Steel them had a witch voodoo priest put a spell on them to make there books sell because I don't understand how they became so rich just from writing books even screenwriters don't become billionaires or even a millionaire from writing a movie script. Those authors who are millionaires and billionaires cheated there way. I don't think they became an author the regular way like you did and me I think they had a spell put on them to make there books sell. 😂 😂 😂

I had to laugh, the other day on Instagram, someone randomly followed me there and said they are a company that deals with tons of op brands including Nike, Adidas. They wanted me to go into partnership with the company despite it only having 37 followers. I was chosen to be represented by these top brands, earn money and they would monetise my platform. So after a few questions, they tell me they buy thier ads through facebook so clients can promote it on thier network. Lol....scammers will try anything.
