I made a short ringtone in Garageband in high school, and I still use it almost 10 years later. It's such a satisfying feeling to be able to create something like this that you can be proud of. I'm trying to get back into music creation even though I can't play any instruments because I have a couple projects in mind that I'll need music for. This was a very helpful refresher!

Thanks for doing this video. I finally made a tune. I had known about LMMS from before, but what really helped me out was seeing the work flow. How you start from nothing and gradually build it up. I want to do a few more songs to solidify my skill, but I don't have big need for music right at the moment. Still, if you have any more techniques for composing more elaborate background or ambient music, I'd be interested in viewing that.

I really liked what was said about writing melodies. What i want to highlight is that they are patterns (both rhythmically and in terms of pitch) and if you do anything twice it becomes one, so you are basicly free to do anything as long as you repeat it at least once! Think of the structure of a poem, in music, parts of the melody can basicly rhyme too and you can structure every "block" how you want. (if you repeat it too often it becomes boring so youll want to add variation at somepoint) If you know what a musical scale is, know that good melodies alternate between scalar and stepwise motion. (so a jump and a step and a jump and a step within that scale) if you follow that and primarily use the notes which are within the current chord youre probably at a good starting point. I hope this was somewhat useful :) if you have questions feel free to ask

I couldn't help but find myself looking up and zoning in on it to learn and I will say, this is always going to be my go to when learning the basic of music. I am glad you took the time to make this. My dude, this is an excellent beginner guide. Enough specifics to detail workflow and pointed notes on where creativity should be so it is easy to follow your example and then experiment. As a teacher by trade, I can tell you this was a top tier lesson.

I know this is not the best video for music theory. But, you helped me with something else. LMMS. I always wanted to try making stuff on this thing, but was never able to start as I didn't wanted to learn a whole new software. Ok, so after watching this video, Ima give some more instrument based tips as Im terrible at explaining anything else For starters, I do agree that it can be good to first try out any base instruments your DAW has, as they can either be a base line for finding which instrument you want, or can even work as the instrument in the final product. How ever, that can be restricting at times, and you'll probable eventually want different ones at some point, so here are some free ways to do that. 1. Trying out all base plugins: If you haven't already, try em. While they might not all be the greatest, some can sound good even when used against paid external plug-ins. Not much else to say, just try them, and see if you like them. 2. Soundfonts: Mainly SGM or game ones like Earthbound and Touhou. All soundfont are supposed to be free so if you find any paid ones, just dont even bother with it. Mainly SGM is my favorite to use because its got a lot of good instruments like Pianos, Violins, General Strings (including Tremolo and Pizzicato Strings), as well as General brass and even choir sounds and drums kits. Great for beginners because its simple. As for game based ones, they are better for adding good classic sounds into your music, plus I find sometimes they can just work better then the more realistic ones in SGM and other Plug-ins. 3. Finding free VSTs, of external music plugins: Just look up free VSTs for various instruments, like Piano or Orchestra. Oh, and get Spitfire Labs, its a lot of good instruments all for free. I hope this helps someone

I usually pick a key, make the chord progression, then the bass line, then I do the main melody, then I remember I have the drums left and that I also hate/suck at drums. Then I change the chords and split it between the og instrument and a melody instrument that sounds like percussion. After a that, I regret my key choice and spend hours unsuccessfully transposing it to some harmonic minor key. Then I realize the original sounds much better. It's now 2 am and I have the mixing left to do. hELP Forgot to add, take all of this and put it on top of learning how to play in my midi controller. I took piano lessons as a kid and the only thing I remember is the things I did wrong. Not why or how. Just that it was wrong.
