When I try to do a swipe transition using a similar process, the saber effect leaves a strange border. Any ideas?

It could be because you didn't nest or precompose the saber effect layer with the layer that was moving. If that's not it, it could be the auto trace feature messing up. Some times you have to do a little fine tuning to get it right. Feel free to send me a video of the problem through instagram, I can take a deeper look there.
