This video shows how to use paprika and annatto infusions to make a 100% natural cold process soap, including how to make a long orange embed from natural soap dough.
At the end of the video, I discuss how, if you have to follow UK (& EU regulations at this time) you can calculate your recipe to fit your cosmetic assessments.
Please note some soapmakers in the UK have less restrictive assessments than are currently available. These are sometimes known as 'Pre 2013' assessments, where soapmakers who were established before 2013 were able to get assessments that allow flexibility on the colors fragrances additives etc that they can put into their soaps. The UK soapmakers on KZfaq that I know of that have this more flexible assessment are Karen at Eden's Secret and Tiggy at Future Primitive. There may be others that I'm not aware of, so if you see these ladies making soap that doesn't seem to fit the regulations I discuss in this video, that is because they are lucky enough to have more flexible assessments. Unfortunately, there will also be other UK soapmakers that either don't know about the rules or don't care and just ignore them anyway.

Are you a soapmaker in the UK? for great value lye (sodium hydroxide), rubbing alcohol and more try JennyChem, they are one of the cheapest suppliers in the UK, I use their lye in all of my soap. Disclaimer
Although my cold process soap making tutorials are of a tutorial nature, they are intended for people who have a good understanding of making cold process soap. The information given is based on what works for me, however, there are lots of variables associated with cold process soap making and I therefore, take no responsibility for the results achieved when using the techniques or methods explained in these tutorials. Cold process soap involves the necessary use of sodium Hydroxide (lye) which is a very dangerous substance. Before attempting and cold process soap making you should ensure you are fully aware of the lye safety procedures and always wear the correct safety equipment when making soap.

Hi Everyone, I hope you enjoy the video. I have included a section at the end about dealing with UK regulations when using embeds and soap dough etc, if you're not affected by these rules you may not be interested in that, so hey that's perfectly fine. Please note some soap makers in the UK have less restrictive assessments than are currently available. These are sometimes known as 'Pre 2013' assessments, where soap makers who were established before 2013 were able to get assessments that allow flexibility on the colours fragrances additives etc that they can put into their soaps. Can you explain why the UK and EU regulations are so specific/strict even for small shops beyond the general “it’s for safety reasons”? I can understand a mass manufacturer that would be making designs/recipes repeatedly having them to ensure consistency and safety as well as for an inspection if they have those. I guess I’m just not understanding what their concern was with small shops that lead to not allowing recipes to have variance in fragrance and colorants as long as they were used within usage guidelines.

Given some of videos I have seen, I had wondered if older soap makers were ‘grandfathered’ in. I have noticed that new UK soapers are more deliberate in their soap making. But be that as it may, you know my feelings...the UK is too restrictive and the US could use a little regulation.
@LadyGecko
@LadyGecko 3 жыл бұрын
@@sam-spooniesoaps-8382 - As with a lot of regulations, they were most likely the result of something bad happening. I know here in the US, there are a lot of soap makers who have no business selling soap. Their soap is lye-heavy, they use way too much FO and EO (especially dangerous), they aren’t using skin safe additives, they don’t cure their soap properly, and so on and so forth.

Beautiful. I often send people from the uk to are channel because you're so informative. I live in Texas so I don't have the same rules that you do. I've also sent people over who need to learn about salt soaps and other things because you're very helpful. Thank you so much for everything that you do. You really are a wonderful teacher. Because of you I know how to spot emulsion when making soap so I dont over mix and also not fear making tiny batches of soap. So many people want to start out with 5 lb of oil when they've never made a loaf in their life. There are times that I only make 2 oz of soap just to test out certain things. Your encouragement help me be able to do that not waste oils and fragrances and colors on a large batch.

I'm a new professional soap maker in the process of having all my assessments done, and I was worried about having to give up on creativity in the designs ! But you made maths look easy and even fun, your explanations are crystal clear, so thanks again ! In France too the regulations are very strict. Once set, the percentages of each ingredient cannot vary at all. Now I'm all excited about trying new designs with my existing recipes !

Thank you so much Lisa. Your soap always blows me away, amazing to look at, but also so beautifully and accurately executed. I think you are an amazing teacher. Would you consider running workshops in person one day, when the world gets back on its' axis? It would be so fantastic to meet you. I really appreciate you explaining the UK regs at the end of this video in particular. I'd love to sell my soaps but don't know where to start, so I end up not making nearly as much as I would like to, because there is a limit to how much you can use and give away. My friends have got to the point where they're having to stock-pile, and I think they are starting to crave the presents they used to get in the days before I discovered soap making! :-( I'm pretty rubbish with maths, but your explanations are so clear it makes me believe I could do the sums too (but then I instantly forget how to do it straight after watching!). Would it be possible to direct me to where I could learn more about the UK regs? I remember you mentioning someone in one of your videos, but I haven't a clue which one and I foolishly didn't take a note at the time. Thanks again, for everything you bring to this wonderful craft. xx

A very informative video for anyone wanting to make soap dough / imbeds in the UK. I tend to work the other way in that I'd work out how much soap I want to make up from my assessment (say for a confetti soap) and make that one day and then make the rest of my recipe up the next day or when the soap is ready to be grated. I've not been brave enough to make soap dough yet, but it's on the list. And I'm like you, I enjoy being creative so am creating my assessments so I can change the design slightly each time.
@IDreamInSoap
@IDreamInSoap 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah, lovely to see you. Yes for confetti, like you I would do it in reverse and make the confetti soap up to a certain amount. But for embeds etc as they're a funny shape and you may not be sure what you are actually going to need I have to do it this way round. All of it a bit of a pain, but oh well :-)

@IDreamInSoap
@IDreamInSoap 3 жыл бұрын
@@traceyjackson8552 I'm not sure why you would need to calculate the IFRA usage. The category 9 usage will be the maximum allowed for soap, so if that's 0.83% then it will always be that and never change. I don't get the 'jump from and to bit' If any of your fragrances have category 9 with a rate over 3% then you stick to 3% as that is the maximum allowed in the UK. So your reference to 57.6% will mean you can only use 3%
@traceyjackson8552
@traceyjackson8552 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa, thanks for that. I have a fragrance, Toasted Almond and Plum crumble, gorgeous fragrance but IFRA is 0.83% safe level....I have other fragrances that are way higher as a lot are. On my assessment I put that I use 2 to 3% (10 to 15g per 500g oils) on all fragrances so I am under the max. The Chemist told me I can only use max 5g per lb (max 1% on this particular fragrance but I can use more on other fragrances. So I had to change the fragrance amount to 5g instead of the 10g I put down as a 2% of 500g. It didn’t make sense to me initially. It’s ok now but it really confused me.....which doesn’t take much 🙄

Wow, Lisa this is a gorgeous natural soap! Thank you so much for sharing about how to work out how to record using soap dough. You make it very easy to understand. I’d love it if you did a video on how to record batch information for PIFs. I struggle a bit when masterbatching my oils especially when I get to the end of the bucket and have to make up a new batch and combine them. I don’t think people realise the amount of back office work there is in the UK for soap making. Thanks for the video xxx

Thanks so much Hilary. I do find it tricky to do just pure UK rules soaps as over 90% of my audience are US, but may try to do something at some point. I like all my materbatches on a spreadsheet and then when I make my soap just add them as an ingredient in that soap's batch notes (another spreadsheet) so mine will say something like 700g MB78 and 500g MB79

Incredible and the orange from the Paprika is soooo good Lisa. Your idea on making the orange was so simple and effective if you have the correct tools. And yes I'm lucky enough that my assessments were done pre-2013. Honestly, I think the rules have gone much too far now, especially regarding having to list where fragrance oils and other ingredients are bought from, because suppliers often discontinue products that do not sell very well (which they are more than entitled to do, so I do not blame the suppliers at all but I do blame the government for changing those rules) so then the product maker has to buy more add on's to their assessments and those add on's are expensive in my opinion, if they were between £5 and £10, that is much more affordable and makers could keep adding more when they can afford to.
@IDreamInSoap
@IDreamInSoap 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Karen, thanks a lot. Yes you are super lucky with your assessments. To be honest I don't think it's all the government. I do think some flexibility could be given. I have even asked if I can have an assessment where I specify 5 fragrance oils only plus 10 colours (specific mica etc not just can I use blue) all of which I already have approved in other assessments. But have been told no they won't do that (I was also willing to pay a premium price), however if you tie yourself to a supplier like the soap kitchen etc then you can use a range of colours and fragrances. It does seem a bit that the refusal for any flexibility is for money purposes. I have at the moment paid for and got 56 assessments (variants) with another 14 in progress.
@EdensSecret1
@EdensSecret1 3 жыл бұрын
@@IDreamInSoap This is something I've wondered many times, was it truly the Government who made these changes, or did the assessors just add all of this themselves. I'd love to know the answer to that question. My opinion exactly, if they can do this for their own Flexi assessments, then it is obviously allowed. Soap making has taken off in such a massive way since I started that they must be making a small fortune on assessments now. A Flexi assessment back in the day was not what is classed as a Flexi assessment now. I have quite a few assessments but nothing like the quantity you have, seems to me like they are going the way of one assessment per soap style, that just makes me mad for the newer soapers. In fact, it stinks. Even the way it already is is ridiculous. I wish something could be done about that.
