This video is helping me out . I have a wall in my dining room that has dark paneling, it needed to be primed & painted. I think I can get this accomplished, with my daughter's help 😅 thank you , truly appreciate your video🥰

I would say first issue, seems like a gloss paint. I imagine a Matte or Eggshell would be better. While this is a way to go, it seems to be more work with the spackling and sanding, etc. I will be getting 4x8 Utility board (its like 1/8 inch think), and just nailing or stapleing that up over paneling and painting.

Done well. I think the primer first is a good call. In my head i think yhe primer soaks into the lines and also leaves a rough surface for the mud to stick to. I think i would have done a strip of fiber tape down each line. Only because i think undisturbed yours will last but any settling or impact yours might crack. But look. Know you know your way around some plaster so if it does crack you just get that knife out and hit it with a swipe. Good job man

Just curious as to why you primed the grooves before applying sparkling? Does that have some.benefit over doing thr sparkling first? Great video and the wall looks amazing!!!

I did a few steps just to ensure that things stick. Maybe there wasn't a need for it but over a year later and it still looks great. In the past I watched people try to do things to paneling and it didn't look right. This just helped to ensure that it was ready to receive anything I applied.

They sell white smooth panels now out of so many different materials even easy to clean vinyl and plastics . why do all the extra steps, it’s super easy to change out the panels .

what did you use to fill in the panel lines? My wall has grooves within each panel so I'm not sure what joint compound will work best
@FamilyFirstK9

I just used the only joint compound I could get at my local hardware store.

So you didn’t actually cover up the wall panel, you used spackle and sanding to smooth it out to look like drywall? My kitchen has hideous paneling that the previous home owner painted with a gross grey chalky type paint. But it has wood groove pattern on it that’s raised. I’m wondering if your method would work.

The entire video walks you through step by step. At around this point 5:31 you will see me applying spackle to the grooves.
