Learn how to make basic joints using rabbets, dadoes and grooves. WOOD magazine's Jim Heavey shows you the difference between them, and how to cut them using your tablesaw or router.
Does it look like you're missing some videos in your playlist? If you see a gray Private window, don't worry, you haven't missed a thing. In fact you should be excited because that tells you we have more videos to come in the weeks to follow. I could tell you the titles but that would ruin the surprise. Thanks for watching and enjoy - now go make something!

I really can’t understand why anyone would want to give this a thumbs down? It’s better than being in college, so precise, well explained and demonstrated - no waffle. 👍

Informative and educational. Thanks Jim. But a bit of a gripe and sugesstion if I may. Most of the videos made by American woodworkers (and professionals around the world) make use of dado blades, many people do not have access to a dado set or (like me) have a table saw that is incapable of carrying a dado set. And as Alan Pinho says he only has a 7" circular saw, hammer and chisel. How about a demo of how to perform these operations with a basic table saw, and as in Alans case a small circular saw and hammer and chisel.

Great advice thank you, I will definitely be making some of these jigs for the groves. I'm so annoyed that we in the UK🇬🇧 don't have dado blades bloody health and safety pot heads 😜😂 I also have a small youtube channel based in the UK if you would like to have a nosy. 🤔😏😁

Why cut the rabbet/rebate up against the fence with the sacrificial board? Surely it's possible to do the cut on the outside length, or is it an issue of blowout, or lack thereof?

I like the jig to make perfect dados. But how to make say five dados on each side of a bookshelf so that they are perfectly aligned for assembly? One way I can think of is to use a piece of wood as a stop against which one jig could be placed, but would need a piece of word for each of the five positions? Is there a simpler way?

Wish I had all these tools, but I have to make do with a 7" circular saw, hammer and chisel.

Can a slot or dado can be to tight and leave no room for glue? I assume looseness leads to alignment issues, do people clamp a reference surface or jig?
@Wood
@Wood 2 жыл бұрын
If the dado is so tight it scrapes the glue off the walls of the dado, that will weaken the joint. A shop-made jig like this one helps keep everything square. www.woodmagazine.com/glues/keep-right-angles-right

Why not just keep the safety glasses on the whole time, steada doin it just b4 each cut?.. just sayin.

I remove my safety glasses because I see a little better without them. Not sure if I would have done the same when younger; might be compensating for normal age related sight deterioration. Haven't considered it before, but assume I remove safety glasses sometimes out of habit rather than need.

Why do you call them rabbets, aren’t they a furry animal. Aren’t they rebates

I think it's a matter of how it's pronounced in different parts of the world. Here's some info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbet

In the US, "rebate" is the money you get back for buying an overpriced tool or car.
