New Years resolutions are more than the punchline of a joke. They are actually a powerful tool to help you cross over the threshold of the new year into new possibility with a clearer idea of goals and strategies for living a bigger, bolder, and truer life. Join me as I talk about how to do this and why you should be doing it sooner than later to give your goals a fighting chance.
Here is a link to a worksheet that can help you organise your thoughts. You can go to my website and see the original along with an example of my own brainstorming or keep reading to find it here in the text box.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS WORKSHEET
Take stock of the last year. What are the things that stand out, both good and otherwise? Brainstorm: books, music, walks, cooking, making, learning. Can you list at least five things that stand out about this past year? Feel free to add more, as many as you can think of, on a separate sheet of paper. Pay attention to:
• What did you learn this year?
• What did you try this past year?
• What did you make that you really enjoyed?
The next questions may throw up some scary and/or sad emotions. Feel free to take it slow and take lots of breaks in this section but be as honest as you can. You can’t heal until you face up to it. Facing the truth is your first step in healing and transforming.
• What is in your life that does not serve you?
• How do you trip yourself up?
• What are you afraid of?
• What are you afraid of missing?
Now, take what you have thought about and written and use it to make your goals for the year to come and to give you some context for what you desire.
• This year, what do you want to learn?
• This year, what do you want to try?
• This year, what do you want to change or remove from your life that does not serve you? Is there anything that you just want to stop?
• What are things that you would add or change in the coming year if you could? (Do this quickly, no editing.)
• If you could have any wishes and knew that they had already come true, what would they be?
• What would it look like if you knew you could live a bigger and bolder life? Add details - lots of details.
• What do you have to do to die with the right regrets?

MY goodness what a nice thing to read, Gilly. My early life had a lot of challenges. Persistence and imagination (and luck) got to another side of stuff and I believe in this so, so much, also that persistence and imagination have a lot to do with making way for luck. I just wanted to get that out there in case there was someone who needed to here it. Thank you for touching base with your kind words. Kelly

Kelly, thank you, this video is very helpful for me. I usually don't make New Year resolutions. I just decide what I want to do when ever. However, when it come to my artwork, this strategy never worked out so well. I do need to write out my goals. The prompts are a big help. I have to watch this over again and take notes. Your hair looks super.

Hiya. Thank you for this charming message. Actually, resolutions (goal making) are such essential tools in my life and creative life toolbox that I also "set" mid-year resolutions around the end of May. Not even kidding. I take stock of how the first of the year resolutions are faring and see what needs to tweaking or more. Creatively I suspect most of us are not quite honest with ourselves about wanting more and pen and paper are genius tools for getting that going. On a less lofty note, I am pretty darn pleased with how the hair is growing out! Kind of an old lady, bad ass shag. I try to do my bit. 😺😺

Hi Julie. Thanks for touching base. It is weird how no one ever tells us to gives our dreams and goals a heads-up so we can warm up. And yes! to checking in for Samhain. I didn't want to sound too obsessed in the video so I didn't go on about how I ALWAYS check in with mid-years resolutions, to tweak the beginning of the year one. Keep me posted on how it goes. Kelly

Thank you for this lovely message, Diana. As a teacher and as a creative person I find that it is so easy not to give ourselves the luxury of reflection and being truly honest with ourselves about we allow ourselves to believe and reach for. Great ideas! I will put them to good use. My challenge is: mentally, MY new year starts in September. I find that the Tuesday after Labour Day "feels" like the beginning of another year. Hiya, Shreeva. Nah, there is no need to "fail". In fact, one of the best things I discovered was that there is something called Lady's Day which is in March and not that long ago in history it was the beginning of the year. So sometimes if I get a wobbly start I just practice and keep getting stuff into place and then when 25 March comes round I think, Happy New Year and here are my resolutions and goals all put in place and ready to go.

Thank you for this wonderful walk through of New Years Resolutions! To be completely honest, as much as I also love the new year and all the things it represents, I have always been someone who, for whatever odd reason, feels like I can’t really start work on my new year’s goals until the new year starts. And as you said, that puts so much pressure and strain on those goals that a lot of the time I feel overwhelmed and I always end up not reaching those goals. This is such a fresh perspective for me. I’ve already been struggling this January because I had some hiccups the first week or so and it feels like I’m already “behind”. But watching your video has helped me to understand that not only is it not too late for this year, but has also given me a new outlook to better set myself up for success next year!

Thank you for this lovely message, Jessica. I know from teaching (and my own experience!) that is can be difficult to give ourselves permission to be honest with our creative dreams, let alone go big with them. Paper and pen and some quiet (I sometimes go to the library and I have my own studio - libraries are just so very quiet and that helps) can keep us honest and dreaming. Here's hoping you have a very happy New Year. Kelly

Kelly, I love this my birthday was Friday 74th and was just thinking about all these things. How it makes sense to have a plan quideline head of time rather than a rash idea or statement on New Years day. I too am planning on drawing everyday because I need and want to get better at it. So I started on my Birthday. I think this will help me direct my collage journals I've been going to start. I just finished making all my Holiday cards to post tomorrow. I don't make resolutions...my motto is kind of "what will be will be"...but this was intriguing and got me thinking why the hell don't I?? Um, not with me though 😅 Your pep talk succeeded here, and I'm off to make a list...

Wow, Sandra, thank you for this message. I did realise that it is not exactly on-brand (🫤) but it has been on my list of things to get out there for about four years because I believe it in so, so much. I even make mid-year resolutions to take stock and tweak how the year is going. Yogi Berra said, "If you don't know where you're going, you'll end up someplace else." I guess resolutions are my way of knowing where I am going. Probably. Nepal? (Nah.) But listing and then giving shape to what you want to achieve is powerful. Thank you for giving it a try. 🌷🌷🌼🌼🌻🌻

Hi, Kelly! I’m one of those people for whom resolutions make no sense, I’m sorry to say. I could never understand why we should make resolutions in the beginning of the year, when, in fact, time is continuous and 1st January is just the day after 31st December. Being a teacher, the school year begins in September and, having been in school all my life (as a student and then a teacher), the year actually begins in September. In January it’s simply the beginning of the 2nd term. I think that “having to” make resolutions in the New Year is so stressful. What if I don’t have any, because I made them throughout the year? Or what if I don’t feel well pressuring myself to make resolutions because everyone is doing that? When you did that video on journaling, I started journaling. I had never done that in my life, but it’s been 200 plus days that I journal every single day (I then cover it all up with art pieces, I will never read it again). It has helped me a lot, specially regarding my mother’s death. So, everyday I reflect on what bothers me, what makes me sad, what I want to change, what I want to do, what makes me happy, etc. In fact, today (5th December) I did something that was a resolution made a few days ago. Having said that, I don’t understand why I should write about resolutions, specifically this time of the year, when everyday I reflect about my life... Anyway, I always love your videos and I have nothing against people who make resolutions, I have a friend who does that and also on her birthday. So I understand it, but if you journal, isn’t that redundant? 💙💜💚♥️🧡💗🖤💛❤️

Hello, dear Alex. I guess for me there is a threshold between the end of the year and the beginning of the new one - although you are quite right about time and the calendar I am using has not always been the same calendar as the past. That is a good question, Rita. I mean that when it is out last day here what might be the thing that we are sorry we didn't let ourselves do or try. The regret part is that even though we may not "succeed" as the world counts these things, maybe our wild dream was a detour from the norm that costs us in other ways, but it would have been a mortal mistake not to try. 🌻🌼🌷
