This is a new and improved version of my homemade reusable wax wrap food covers. I absolutely love these food wraps. They are a perfect way of replacing plastic cling wrap and this new improved version is much quicker if you don’t want to cover all surfaces in your oven!
You will need:
- Covered and protected ironing board. I used a large piece of wood which I covered in many layers of newspaper.
- Either beeswax granules (amzn.to/1OkqpxL) or for my friends who are vegan, I use soy wax. If you can’t get granules you can melt the wax. Pour into a square block shaped container to set. Once set finely grate which makes melting super easy and fast.
- Cotton Fabric that has been washed and ironed to remove any wrinkles works the best.
- Several sheets of Baking Paper/Parchment Paper: amzn.to/1lxqOpG
- Electric iron set to hot.
Basically, all you do is cover working surface or ironing board with lots of protective paper.
On top of protective paper, place a sheet of baking paper bigger than pre-cut fabric.
Lay fabric down on top of baking paper.
Sprinkle a fine layering of wax down on top of fabric.
Place another piece of baking paper on top wax layered fabric.
Slowly and with care, run hot iron over the above.
Continue working until wax has fully melted.
With care, lift off top layer of baking paper and check to see that all wax has melted into the fabric - which incidentally will have gone all the way through to the other side.
Gently lift up fabric and allow for excess wax to drip off onto the top of the base baking paper and to cool and set. This takes a few moments.
When set and firm, place between sheets of baking paper just in case they stick to each other.
When I do mine now, my neighbour comes and helps, which makes the process quicker.
Place another piece of fabric down on top of the dripped and excess wax. Top with baking paper and start the whole process over again. I found that I could repeat process without adding additional wax several times before reapply more wax.
To clean sheets between use, I simply give mine a nice warm soapy wipe on both sides and place outside on the line for a good airing.
If you find that the wraps need replenishing or recoating, ensure they are clean and repeat above process, or iron off wax. To do this, simply place fabric between sheets of newsprint paper and continue ironing until wax lifts off, just as you would if you were baking!

Thought I have reined my iron but will try the newspaper. Thanks for showing / teaching us. Would love to get it right. ☺️

I was wondering what you do if there’s spills and the sort? Like how do you wash your beeswax and make sure you don’t accidentally melt bits of food in with the beeswax next time?
@rosylemons
@rosylemons 5 жыл бұрын
Great video! I just ordered the beeswax so I can’t wait to try it next week. In some other videos/ places where they sell it they use the beeswax and ask jojoba oil, do you think that’s necessary? Also is it good to use with covering fruit or lemons that are cut in half or should I just put those fruits in a bowl and then cover the top with this wrap? Thanks!
@teed9796
@teed9796 4 жыл бұрын
rosylemon Definitely add some jojoba oil. It helps immensely with flexibility and will stop the wax cracking and flaking like you saw here. If you want an even better product, add tree resin (pine or dramar). In combination, those three ingredients will give you a tackier, pliable wrap that seals better and lasts longer. This method is easy, but in my opinion (over a few years of making them), the triple ingredient recipe yields a far better product. Good luck! 😉

Tee D what would u recommend-ratio wise soy wax:jojoba oil: tree resin? Your ‘recipe’ so to speak would be really helpful! 🤓
@teed9796
@teed9796 4 жыл бұрын
Holly Wally Whoopsie Recipes are trial and error. Depending on where I source my beeswax and resin, the ratios change. Even seasonal factors can affect the beeswax, so I’m constantly testing and adjusting. Generally speaking, I use around 20%-30% resin in my mix. I prefer to use as least as possible while still giving a great ‘seal’ around a bowl. Have fun experimenting. It takes a while to find your perfect blend 😉

We used to seal our canning jars (for jelly and jam) with paraffin wax. It is food safe. We melted paraffin and poured it into the jar on top of the jam. No need for rings or lids. I would assume it would be just as safe and effective as beeswax

Hi Sheri, I learned that paraffin wax is too brittle when it's cooled. Do you have experienced that too? I don't want to ruin my fabric but it would be cheaper than beeswax.

@chrestienne
@chrestienne 5 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend it. The wax is going to melt again, and you're going to get wax in your food and in the microwave. If you leave them in for more than a minute it could become a hazard. Also when washing these, make sure you only use warm water, as hot water will melt the wax again.

I have a question. Why don't you just melt the wax, like, in a pot, or something, and then dip the fabric into it? Wouldn't that be easier than using all that parchment paper? Just wondering if that would work better, get absorbed into the fabric better, and be easier...?
@SundaysChild1966

I think it would be .. too much wax? After folding and using it, chunks might fall off?
@magikdust2095
@magikdust2095 Жыл бұрын
@@SundaysChild1966 would it maybe work if you were to scrape the excess wax off the fabric afterwards? Like, if you put the fabric into the pot with melted wax, and then kinda scraped the fabric while the wax was still somewhat liquid to get excess wax off it. I'm not sure if that would work, it's just an idea.
@SundaysChild1966
@SundaysChild1966 Жыл бұрын
@@magikdust2095 It could work .. I think it's a fine line between too much wax making it stiff and crunchy .. and too little wax not making it stay bent around whatever you are covering + be kinda waterproof
