would starching the cloth work. And why do you need to stiffen it up in the first place? many types of paper are used for making paper beads and many of them are quite flimsy, if not flimsier than a piece of cloth, depending on cloth of course.

Hi thanks for ur video i am new to beading. Wow thats a lot of faffing around to cut them to size having to print on sticky paper etc.... Anyway its great to see different texture materials u can use for beads. I am over the pond in London so can u tell me what u mean by freezer paper please? Also were did u get ur awesome zebra scissors & cutter from?
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 5 жыл бұрын
Freezer paper is paper that is non stick on one side and the other side can be written on with markers for identification. I can be used to wrap meats for storage in the freezer. I never use it for that however. I use it for crafts. You can iron the non stick side to fabric for making pieced quilts. I have also used it as a non stick surface for making these fabric beads by laying the fabric on the non stick side so the finished, dried fabric sheet does not stick to it. The non stick side is slippery like waxed paper. The zebra scissors are made by Fiskars and I bought it from Amazon.com. The zebra rotary cutter I bought from my local Wal-Mart. Not sure of the brand. I bought it because it was zebra print! I wanted consistent strips, that is why I used the sticky paper universal marking templates that I make. I didn't want to use a ruler and mess up the measurements. That is why I offer the Universal Marking templates.

@JustPlainFun

You would have to use a lot of starch to get the same effect but it would work. I would make sure the starch penetrates the fabric and completely dries before cutting it into strips. I have a tutorial on how I starch my fabric for quilting. I am sure this would work for bead making as well. www.jpfun.com/quilting-sewing/qayp/starching-fabrics

Did you buy your ruler with that handle on it, or is it one of those shower handles that you buy for the elderly mounted on your regular ruler?
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 5 жыл бұрын
It is a Omnigrid Ruler Grip Double Suction cup. I bought it at amazon.com at: smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PA2852 I no longer use it because I made myself a weight that holds the ruler down while I cut. That way, I don't have to apply as much pressure and make my arm or shoulder sore over time. The weight that I made is just over 3 pounds and is made with wood and large heavy washers bolted to it with a metal handle in the middle. I have a page on my web site that shows a picture of it at: www.paperbeadcrafts.com/howto/cutsheets.shtml

You could but the object here is to stiffen the fabric enough so you can cut and roll it with clean edges and no fraying of the fabric fibers. You can use any of the fabric stiffeners that are out there. I have used several in the past for various sewing and fabric craft projects I have done.

Hi. Can these be worn like a necklace? If so, how can they be made waterproof?
@JustPlainFun
@JustPlainFun 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they can be made into a necklace. They are water resistant but not waterproof. If you soak them, you take a risk of them un rolling. They are made of fabric so it won't fall apart like paper would. The only way to make them water proof is to coat them with 1 or two coats of a 2 part epoxy resin. I will have to make a video on how I do it. I dip them into epoxy resin while the beads are on a wax covered toothpick or some other stick that is almost the same thickness as the hole in the bead. I make my wax with bees wax and mineral oil and dip the toothpick into it before adding the bead. The bead should also be already coated with at least one coat of a thin glaze before applying the epoxy resin.

Way way too much work. I can make fabric beads in under 1 min. Use a dowel or pencil. Cut fabric and then glue the end. Bam done. No need to stiffen the fabric. Once rolled it is stiff. Also you can instead of glue wrap wire around it to make more Designs or use wire and add seed beads to make more designs as well.

There is nothing wrong with the free template. It is just a downloadable file that does not link to anything and will not access anything on your computer. Amazing the amount of “stuff” you need to make a bead, using the “stick on” metric paper takes even longer than using a regular ruler which is what I use. I use toothpick or knitting needle, a $2.50 rotating cutter or scissors. The key for me is to spend as little as possible and recycle as much as possible.all I spend money on is glue and spray fixative. For me it’s just a hobby, I don’t sell my beads, I leave that to the women of Africa who struggle to earn an income by precisely selling paper beads to foreigners.
