Hi all¡¡¡ Here is one of the most famous transformations in organic chemistry. It is a really simple process but it took me 3 days to complete it. I was lucky to get some really good crystals of salicylic acid. For those of you wondering... I recovered the rest of the crystals off camera because I didnt want to extend the video any longer. I hope you apreciate my work¡¡ I really enjoyed making and filming this video :D

You should do one thing, if you don't have any soxhelt extractor,that is add turmeric powder to ethanol or any other solvent you like to use and first do reflux & then distillation.

Great video! Clear explanation of the mechanism, very clean and succint procedures in the synthesis, and all in non shaky 1080p! One question. Is it possible to use dilute hydrochloric (dirty, from cleaning solution) or dilute sulphuric acid (clean) to precipitate the sailicylic acid? I understand sodium sulphate is not very soluble and might be precipitated too? Edit: It turned out NaSO4 is very soluble at 40C, but salicylic acid would also be slightly more soluble ... I guess a methanol extraction might just give a bit more yield.
@Glattuh
@Glattuh 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you!!! You can use whatever strong acid you want yes, even diluted HCl of course. Ehat do you mean by methanol extraction? Methanol is soluble in the reaction mixture (water) and you cant carry an extraction with that. Maybe with another solvent but I think crystallization is the best method, by far. If you are worried about salts in your final product you can do several recrystallizations, and they will give you more and more pure products!

I loved your video. It was very detailed! I was wondering if the hydrolysis is possible without separating ASA from aspirin? Would it affect the experiment? Thanks!
@Glattuh
@Glattuh 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Nice question actually. The only risk is that some of the other stuff that it is added to pills gets hydrolised and in the later step of filtering it passes through as it may be soluble. If your pills only have starch I really think it is okay to do the hydrolysis in just one step. Then the crystals are purified in the same way. If it contains other things... probably it is still ok to do that but I would prefer to perform the procedure I show you in my video.

Hello nice work! Nice video! I liked the sound of the sea, very relaxing. there are few things that were not clear to me. What is destillation for? What is happening there (chemically)?. In 3:44, what you have is pure powder or is it wet?.
@Glattuh
@Glattuh 4 жыл бұрын
Hi thank you very much!!! The distillation is applied to remove the solvent used to extract the acetylsalycilic acid from the tablets. Once the solvent has extracted all the ASA it is no longer needed so by doing simple distillation, we separate the ASA which remains in the round bottom flask; and the solvent, which is ready to be used again if needed. If you refer at what is happening chemichally, well, one could get very serious speaking about this but I suggest you search for simple distillation theory on the internet. That is a separation technique, no chemical reaction is taking place in the process. Once the distillation is done, the powder should be dry yes. I double checked that by gentle smelling and I remember it no longer had the characteristic acetone scent :D Hope that helps
@TheBAbert
@TheBAbert 4 жыл бұрын
@@Glattuh Yes, I know what distillation is hehe. I meant, how acetone separates (chemically) ASA from the other components of the tablet. Like when you showed it in 4:38. I guess my question wasn´t well formulated, sorry. But you're right, I will search for some information about the other components of the tablet on the internet, some bonds must have formed with acetone, I think. Thanks for your reply! Again, nice video!!. Well explained!!

@Glattuh
@Glattuh 4 жыл бұрын
Ohh i did not understand you hehe. Well acetone separates the ASA from the tablets because it is the only organic soluble compound there. The rest is mostly starch wich is not soluble in acetone. That is why it is so easy to extract it :D. On the other hand no covalent bonds are formed between the solvent and the ASA, just intermolecular interactions

Is refluxing necessary ? As I am not beholding any sort reflux column unlike ya ..Any suggestions for an alternative to reflux column..
@Glattuh
@Glattuh 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. It is kind of necessary yes. You need two things for the reaction to develop: heat and time. By applying both you will lose solvent over time so a reflux is needed. If you dont have a reflux condenser you can set it to boil in a beaker or better in an Erlenmeyer flask and top it with a RB flask filled with cold water, or a watch glass but without the water. That way you try to minimize the amount of water that is lost by evaporation but in both cases (more with the second one) you will need to keep adding small volumes of it in order to maintain the volume inside.

Hii there, Really awesome video and your lab skills like our wowwwwwwwwww....u should make a video teaching them. Just a quick question, (which might be too silly) How would you incorporate stoichiometry in this experiment... like apart from calculating the number of moles required of the reactants... anything else? Also could you give a balanced chemical equation for this reaction? And one more thing please do make a video on the same reaction which is base promoted.... Thanxxxxxxxx.:)
@Glattuh
@Glattuh 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks you for the comment¡ There is no silly questions in science :D. Well for the stoichiometry in the reaction... There is not much more to add. You need 3 OH in order to break and neutralize the molecules involved. If you use less it may not go to completion. In fact an excess is always good to be used since NaOH is cheap and can be neutralized with diluted HCl which is also cheap so you dont have to care a lot about that. In my video I used 10% excess of NaOH. If you need te equation it would be 1eq of ASA + 3eq NaOH -> 1eq Salicylate + 1eq Acetate + 3eq H2O I guess with that final sentence you mean the same reaction but using acid catalyst instead... I sure can do that and compare yields¡¡¡ I will think on doing this :D

@@Glattuh Ohh I see. Not sure what I was thinking (this comment was 4 months ago, lol). I plan on doing this extraction so I can make some salicylic acid to make phenol. I have done it before, but I used MeOH instead of acetone. This time I think I'll use acetone.

Hi! In 50% of the cases I base my procedures by watching other videos on YT or from papers. The other half, like in this one, I just create them myself based on my own necesities and requirements. In any case I do not create a procedure per se. If many of you are interested I may start writing them and sharing the with you people on as pdf. But for now, its too much work for very few people that is asking about it. Thanks for your comment!
