In this episode i will show you how to make home made soap the good old fashioned way.
Making soap out of wood ash and vegetable oil (shea-butter/palm oil) this is a fun, sustainable project as a measure to counter the global pandemic COVID-19 teach rural or (IDP) internally displaced persons who may not have access to "off the shelve soap" how to make soap from wood ashe.
STEP 1: Firstly you need to make lye from wood ash (lye water),
STEP 2: Filter lye water with an old cloth or sieve.
STEP 3: Boil the lye water in a stainless steel pot to enhance its concentration.
STEP 4: Heat up your shea-butter for 5 minutes and then gradually add your lye water and stir in one direction.
STEP 5: Let the ashe soap cool and there you have it !!!!

As a soap maker myself, I will say that there are 2 kinds of lye: 1, potassium hydroxide (used for making liquid soap or softer soaps that are easy to pinch apart like African black soap) and that is what he makes in his video. But you can also purchase it, although in that case, you may need to mix it with a specific measured amount of water. 2, Sodium hydroxide, which is used to make hard, solid soap bars. You can purchase this. It comes in a dry, grainy form like salt or sugar. It must be mixed with a specific measured amount of water. Both types of lye produce very different results in soap. When you mix the exact, proper amounts lye and water, then add a specific amount of oil, fat, or butter-- the natural result is soap! *** WHEN THE INGREDIENTS ARE PROPERLY WEIGHED AND EMULSIFIED TOGETHER, THE FINISHED PRODUCT DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY LYE, AS THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION CHANGES. IT IS NO LONGER LYE, WATER AND OIL-- IT IS NOW SOAP. It is believed that soap was discovered a very long time ago, by accident, when meat was cooked over an open fire-- the animal fat would drip into the ashes of the burning wood. Then someone would pour water to put the fire out (or it would rain), and-- soap! Each different kind of fat, oil, or butter (for example, olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, shea butter, cocoa butter) has a different sopanification value. Meaning exactly how much lye and water are required to properly soapinify a certain amount or type of fat, oil, or butter. There are free soap calculators online to help you calculate all this (how much water, lye and oil/fat). Not using the proper amounts can cause you to have too much lye, which can burn or irritate the skin. Also, each different fat, oil, or butter will give you different qualities in your soap. For example, olive oil makes a creamy (some say slimy) soap with very tiny bubbles, but is very moisturizing for your skin. Bar soap made with 100% olive oil only, is called "castile" soap. It takes almost a year to dry completely. But it is very gentle. Perfect for sensitive skin or babies. Palm oil and cocoa butter help to harden your soap bar, but also nourish skin. Coconut oil gives you lots of big bubbles, and cleans very well, but can be drying on the skin. Most natural soaps are made with a mix of olive oil, palm oil, and coconut oil, to give them a good balance of hardness, bubbles, cleaning ability and nourishment for the skin.

I am concerned that you didn't let the soap cure for a few weeks before using it. I can be bad for your skin if it is not properly cured.

Hot processed soap can be used immediately, but since the measurements are inexact, you're right, it could still be pretty alkaline. Potash is a much weaker alkaline than regular soap making lye, though.

Since this was not a lye water reduction, I think a lye burn is not likely. For hard soaps the lye water has to boil down and become concentrated, that is where you have to be concerned. This seems a lot safer to me.
