In the western world isn’t this affordable to do a repair like this. It wil cost you at least 4 times more than a new one! And that is the reason we do not repair anymore! and the second part the quality in this time sucks as well of everything! So why would you repair if the quality isn’t great in the first place! And that is also the reason why a new one is cheaper.

The only reason this doesn't happen in the Western world is cos the raw materials cost more than buying a new one. Sad fact and then the disguarded waste is shipped in containers to the East as a dump yard.. Such a shame. If only we can all afford to do this, we would take pride in doing something like this and for the environment. Plus this video would be better appreciated by the dislikers, that would just pollute the planet n get a new one at less price than to repair cos it's cheaper. But note this is not the case in the East. It's cheaper to buy fabric argan sew a dress, but in the West it's cheaper to buy a dress than spend lots of money on fabric and trimmings. So take a note to applicate the work. Well done!

My grandma would recover her chairs. Make clothes. Material used to be cheaper in 🇺🇸 but not for a long time. Mom made lots of clothes too. 7 of us kids. When my first was a baby I found it cheaper to buy at thrift stores. Pretty much still do. In beginning of this video, I thought I could do this to my sofa, then I realized the material would cost about the same or more. You are right. Many of us are wasteful. I wish I could afford new but All our furnishings are used because I cannot justify in my mind spending a lot of $ for new when I can get good conditioned furniture for free or not much $. This man did an awesome job. I would put new backing on though. ( the first material he put back on sofa.

@@ebear6555 I know what I mean. It's sad that we can't make things or upcycle and take pride cos just the raw materials and tools all add up to much higher or same as a new.. and yeah instead it's cheaper to buy second hand that's still almost like new. But still means we are chucking away our old... Tbh most of the antique furniture have much better than cheap plywood or MDF. So those have a a value and are worth upholstering. The material he reused is coconut coil it's what was used back in the day and in fact used today as well in mattress even for baby matertess and are very expensive in the western work when they use it. Its much more breathable, natural and u can wash it and dry it out. So it's not like a sponge that once it looses it plump u can get it back... It's not as comfortable as sponge but has a good firm backing as for a back rest it's comfortable but for your bum though 😆. It's lovely that your mom made lots of clothing, that's the same with my mum and aunts too... Myself I studied fashion design but sadly living in the uk., It cheaper to buy a dress than sew😔 unless of course u use and old outfit to make something new... But still buying the thread, zip, buttons etc they all add up unless u had left overs.

@@gerigame2995 I can't sew a sraight line😂. Kudos to those that sew. We have struggled most of our married life. A few times I made decent $, not lots but enough to be on our own 2 feet & have a little extra... most of extra went to help kids against husbands wishes. He could see the future I could not. And I help others when I could. In my mind it was " I have it why can't I help. Well now nearly 60 & no savings & can't seem to get a job....I get it. Hard lesson, but for some reason I still help when I can. I am getting ready to buy a 2004 Toyota Corolla. I need a car So bad. It should last a long time. I would rather have a newer one ..maybe 15 or 16 but above budget. I will be broke but not having a car is not helping me get work. I think it is great for people to buy second hand. I cannot settle in my mind to buy new when near new works. After washing & wearing new it is used so anyway u get my thought.. I would love to have a little home with lots of land & a shop for husband. Tried once & failed do to husbands medical issues & not going back to school when I was younger. I recently certified for MA ( Certified Clinical Medical Assistant) to no avail. Waste of time & $. Still can't get work. Life sucks right now

My father was an upholsterer. In the late 40’s and early 50’s he worked in a shed next to our house and re-covered many, many suites for local people. In place of expensive leather, linen and velvet , Rexene and moquette were the usual materials used to cover them and, until foam rubber was invented, they were stuffed with horsehair and flocks. He used tacks (which he held in his mouth...blowing the dust off them first.....and occasionally, accidentally swallowing a couple) The finished product looking something like this but with the luxury of springs artfully held in place by a lattice of webbing the seat was. cushioned with horsehair or flocks. Modern methods include the use of an air compressor staple gun which is much faster, less tiring and safer than hammering in tacks or using a hand stapler. And,as mentioned in the comments, for most people it is cheaper to buy a new factory made suite than re-cover the old one. With the rough hewn frame, no electricity and limited resources he has made a great job of updating and recovering this wreck of a sofa. 👍

I'm guessing by the comments here most folks don't know how furniture is made and have never been in an upholstery shop. I love mid century modern and have an old couch that I had recovered. Staple guns seem to now be standard tools of the trade.
