If you wish to reset the volume programming for each drink type on this machine , the default values as outlined in the instruction manual are:
Espresso ≃40ml
2 x Espresso ≃80ml
Long ≃120ml
2 x Long ≃240ml
Take note: Results will vary with each different batch of coffee beans, and therefore you may need to adjust the grind coarseness and or Min/Max dial to suit with each different batch - For a quality strong velvety espresso, as opposed to a translucent, low viscosity watery looking extraction, aim to program the machine to deliver a 30ml espresso that first maybe begins to flow out in a drop or two, but then soon proceeds to slowly, consistently flow out in a rich viscosity, full of colour and crema. You do want the extraction relatively slow, rather than the water just channeling and gushing through the coffee puck. However if after making the setting changes shown in this video, you find that each espresso, after the first few initial drops of extraction; continues to be delivered in drops, rather than the target of a consistent flow, then just firstly experiment with adjusting the grind coarseness back a notch or two, less fine. You can alternatively, and or then additionally, turn the Min/Max dial on the face of the machine back a notch or two, anti-clockwise away from the maximum setting. Both of these adjustments will result in a less resistive path for the water to flow. Also note the Min/Max dial on the face of the machine determines how much coffee is potentially ground up into each puck by altering the duration in which the coffee mill spins for. On the Min setting the coffee mill spins and grinds up beans for about 4 seconds, and on the Max setting, about 8 seconds. The amount of coffee beans that feed down into the mill during these time frames will vary each time, and ultimately determine how much ground coffee ends up being involved in each extraction. An overcrowded puck, alike an overly fine grind; can result in the delivery of the coffee too slow, in drops. You may need to adjust each of the settings differently to best suit each different type of coffee beans that you're using.
*Disclaimer: Any damages as a result of following my suggestions are your own responsibility. Always refer to your user manual. The setting changes demonstrated may or may not increase caffeine content/strength of coffee.

Please note: The extra methods shown with regards to volume programming can obviously result in an under-extraction of coffee due to how quick the extraction time is. These volume programming steps are taken as a work around to achieve an espresso volume of 30ml on this machine, with disregard for extraction time and quality. With this automatic machine you'll unlikely achieve a 30ml shot that takes the ideal time of 25 to 30 seconds to extract. Additionally, the 15ml x 2 setting is more of an additional taste experiment I conducted, rather than a setting that will achieve an extraction time that is even close to desirable. I do not recommend it. Programming to between 30-35ml achieves an acceptable result that resembles a half decent espresso, however unfortunately with this automatic user friendly machine the results achievable will never be quite the same as with a manual espresso machine, alike used in a cafe. Results will vary with each different batch of coffee beans, and therefore you may need to adjust the grind coarseness and or Min/Max dial to suit with each different batch - For a quality creamy looking espresso, as opposed to a translucent, low viscosity watery looking extraction, aim to program the machine to deliver a 30ml espresso that first maybe begins to flow out in a drop or two, but then proceeds to slowly, consistently flow out in a rich viscosity, full of colour and crema. An overcrowded puck, alike an overly fine coffee grind; can result in the delivery of the coffee too slow, in drops. You may need to adjust each of the settings differently to best suit each different type of coffee beans that you're using. Pre-ground: If you are using pre-ground coffee, then obviously you cannot adjust the coffee mill grind duration via the Min/Max dial on the face of the machine, nor will grind coarseness changes have any effect. If you're using pre-ground coffee then you should have the dial on the front of the machine, turned all the way anti-clockwise. The indicator on the dial will align with a little illustration of pre-ground coffee on a spoon. This sets the machine to the pre-ground coffee mode. Only one coffee should be made at a time using one scoop, please refer to the manual with regards to ground coffee dosage. You can find the instruction manual here: www.delonghi.com/en-au/manuals/ecam22-110-sb-magnifica-s-automatic-coffee-machine/p/ECAM22.110.SB

Hi! I just bought this machine and I am a cappuccino drinker. I keep trying to get a good Espresso, so I will get a good cappuccino, but they keep coming up bitter or sour and with a too quick extraction time. I set the single Espresso to 30/33ml but if I set the grinder to fine, it will drip slowly. What do I do? 😢
@tyler.martin
@tyler.martin Ай бұрын
@@romyvankeppel2185 For longer extraction time, I'd try an extraction of 35ml, or even just the default 40ml. The lesser the volume delivered, the more under-extracted it will be. With this machine it's a trade off between volume and extraction time. I opt for a 35ml shot nowadays. As for flow, if it's dripping too slowly on the finest grind setting then I'd adjust by one notch coarser at a time, check and repeat, until it slowly flows instead of only dripping. Also, out of the few variables we have control over with an automatic machine, using freshly roasted beans of a variety we particularly prefer the taste of can make quite a difference. Along with keeping them stowed away fresh and only adding the amount we will use on the day into the machine.

Thanks so much for this helpful video. I just took delivery of the ‘S’ version of this machine yesterday, it’s near identical but for a fancier panarello wand. I’ve followed your tips and increased the heat and strength to max, I find if I adjust the grind to the finest setting the coffee comes out in slow drips so I’ve had to compromise on that and have it set to 3. I might be able to go a tiny bit finer but all in all it’s already a huge improvement. My old Magnifica finally broke at almost 8 years old and was too expensive to repair, this new machine is an improvement in many ways except on the old one there was a dial to adjust the amount of water per shot and you could dial it right down to a ristretto, miss that control. Anyway thanks again!

Brilliant, I'm pleased to hear that the video helped. Thank you for your comment, that dial sounds handy! And yeah if it's dripping for too long rather than eventually forming a steam within a few seconds, then you've done the right thing by going a little coarser with the grind. All the best :)

I am impressed that you can still do some latte art with this steamer. Any advice? I have pulled off the cover of steamer as you did. I tried to steam with angel as well. How much ml milk should I steam for 30 ml coffee ?
@tyler.martin
@tyler.martin Жыл бұрын
Haha yeah I definitely didn't put enough effort into pouring my best latte art while filming these videos, but it is certainly possible to texture the milk just right for latte art with this machine, just takes a bit of getting used to. I'd say less is more with the amount of air intentionally injected with the extended steaming time on this machine - it's easy to make it too thick for intricate patterns if you spend more than a couple seconds stretching the milk. The main focus is just keeping that vortex spinning fast while making sure to not add any further air. As for volume I start off with about 200ml in a 400ml sized pitcher.

Really excellent video and also your steaming milk one, thanks heaps. I am practicing every day steaming milk and re-watching your video to try and perfect it. You certainly make it look easy! A question on this one, have you measured how much coffee is used with the dial all the way to the max? I've been pulling shots (reprogrammed to 20ml) with the dial just over half way. I'll crank it up and see how it tastes tomorrow

Thanks for the video! Maybe a a dumb question, but what about the once in the right? I use the single (right side) for an ordinary coffee, don’t you use them at all? If you do, any suggestions there ?
@tyler.martin
@tyler.martin 6 ай бұрын
I haven't actually used that side. That side is to make a long black coffee, however I prefer to add hot water from a kettle to an espresso (from the left side) for that. Which is known as an 'americano'. Additionally with black coffee, I like to remove the crema off of the top of the espresso with a spoon before adding the hot water, for a 'cleaner' taste and feel. No milk is added. Suggestions no, ideas yes, you could maybe create a setting on the right side for a 25-30 sec extraction for better tasting 'ordinary coffee'. If what you're referring to as an ordinary coffee is primarily a water based with a splash of cold milk, wherein you have ran all the water through a single coffee puk for a long duration. Then you could try the idea, of a 25-30sec extraction, disregarding the volume delivered and just top it up with enough hot water from a kettle before then adding milk (if you do) and see if that tastes nicer than the over extraction the right side delivers by default.

I heard that you said 4 buttons will use same amount of coffee. I'm wonder why dont we set up the single cup button to 30ml (default 40ml) instead of setting the double cup button to 30ml (default setting is 80ml). Thank you.
@tyler.martin
@tyler.martin Жыл бұрын
The symbols next to the buttons don't make any difference. It's entirely up to you what you program each one to be. You're not wrong though, it could make more sense to set the button with the single espresso symbol to 30ml instead of the double one. In this case I am ignoring the symbols on the machine and use my own labels. I chose to do it in this order to have the buttons still remaining in ascending order of ml volume output. With 15ml being first because it is at the top and then 30ml after because it is below :)

Yes this is a normal and necessary function of the machine programing. Sometimes if I haven't used the machine for some days then I will do an extra rinse cycle on top of this and purge hot water alone through the steam line also. Having any residue build up within the lines and components of the machine is not a good thing, so regular rinsing is a good thing.

Nice video video explaining what you can do with an automatic machine. But I have the feeling coffee comes out still too fast, from first drop to last. It should come out like honey drops, almost choking level, agree? Did you use freshly roasted beans?
@tyler.martin
@tyler.martin Жыл бұрын
Thanks, yeah agreed, you want it to begin in drops before forming a slow steady flow, with high viscosity. Sometimes I've had it pull slower than seen in this video after having the new settings dialed in for a while and trying different batches of beans, but after all, it is a cheap machine that doesn't really create an espresso 'how it should be'. You can make an OK coffee, but an automatic machine at this price point isn't going to satisfy a coffee connoisseur. For me it was just a case of making the best of what I had at the time.

Hi, thanks for your comment. With this particular machine, if you just have the flashing triangle symbol showing it means the infuser is not installed properly. It is accessed by the side door once you pull the water container out. Pinch the two red levers, pull it out and push it back in firmly, it should click into place. If it is another problem, please refer to the manual, it has the troubleshooting guide in there. I do not currently have any more videos of this machine, however if your machine purchase did not include a manual, you can find a digital copy of the manual for this particular machine here: www.delonghi.com/en-au/manuals/ecam22-110-sb-magnifica-s-automatic-coffee-machine/p/ECAM22.110.SB

I just noticed in your video that the coffee mill grind on your machine can go beyond level 1. This is the case also with my magnifica s, yet I keep reading that this shouldn't be possible and that you shouldn't be able to rotate it beyond level 1. Have you heard something similar before?
@tyler.martin
@tyler.martin Жыл бұрын
Hi Anna, I did notice that too actually :) though to be honest I don't recall if the machine was already this way once I had begun using it or not. I haven't heard of this before and my guess would be that the dial is probably just a little misaligned with the markings from manufacture. I can't say with certainty, as I haven't been the only person to operate this machine but I've only ever turned the dial while the mill is spinning, as per the instruction manual, so I don't feel its damaged in any way from user error, at least not on my part. Either way, I don't think it's a cause for concern, as regardless of the accuracy of the alignment of these markings, the dial will only turn so far in either direction, before it won't go any further. Unless you're able to continually keep turning the dial and there is no physical stop point, or the stop point continually progresses further away then I wouldn't say anything is broken or worth being concerned about :) Thanks for stopping by

I do so to position the steam wand at a better angle thus to form a quicker vortex in the milk, and sooner. This vortex or whirlpool in the milk is an important factor in texturing the milk to the desired state. With this machine, it is fixed in a vertical orientation. So in addition to counter tilting the pitcher, I also just tilt the entire machine slightly; bringing the fixed wand with it. Ideally a machine designed to steam milk properly will allow you to adjust the pitch without this compromise, ideally you want the wand angled out up to 45 degrees vs just straight down as this machine offers. It's essentially just a little work around I do, it doesn't fully compensate for the lack of angle although I find it does make enough difference to closer achieve the results I want in comparison to not doing it.

If you interrupt the brewing process by pressing the selected button again just after the machine has finished grinding, the machine will spit out the grinded coffee into the container that the coffee pucks normally end up after a brew. @@dejedejsson That makes sense, with a coarser grind, depending on their size; more beans probably make their way through the grinder during the 8 seconds it spins for on Max. Although with a higher weight output, it may not necessarily equate to a stronger tasting coffee though, with the coarser grind exposing less surface area of the beans for infusion during the low contact time with the water.

Can you turn the grind notch from coarse to fine in one grinding process? I saw people saying that you have to go one by one(one point lower->grind-> one point lower->grind) for the machine to actually “recognise” all levels of grinding you re going through. Got my delonghi yesterday, and the grind level is close to 1, but the coffee puck is pretty watery when falling in the tray)
@tyler.martin
@tyler.martin 7 ай бұрын
Yes, as long as the grinder is running, the dial moves freely and you do not have to force it. Turning the dial that is associated with the grinder to a lower number is making a manual adjustment to the grinder that results in a finer grind. The machine does not recognise the changes, but you do. When making this particular adjustment it is good practice to have the grinder operating to avoid causing damage as a result of forcing movement in the components while they're not in operation. Making adjustments of one notch without the grinder spinning is unlikely to cause damage, however you will be able to feel if there is resistance in the dial. If it does not want to move without force, you should not proceed with the adjustment while the grinder is not in operation. The reason for adjusting one notch at a time is for you to be able to distinguish the effect each change has made, however this result will not become apparent until the grinder is cleared of the coffee ground at the previous grind size. In other words, after each change you won't have an accurate representation of the result achieved until the 2nd or 3rd espresso extracted after each setting change.

To prevent potential damage to the grinder and associated components, the adjustment dial must only be turned when the coffee mill is in operation - particularly when adjusting in large increments to a finer grind crossness as shown in the video. If you didn't have to use excessive force to turn the dial then you probably haven't done any significant damage to the components. It would become apparent if there was a serious issue.

Either 1 single 15ml or double shot 30ml, coffee puck always broke in pieces and half still dry. What I need to do?
@tyler.martin
@tyler.martin 7 ай бұрын
Under-extraction. That's to be expected when extracting at such short durations, plus it does fall from the basket into the tray so it's almost always going to break into pieces with such short extraction time, but you at least don't want half of it dry and untouched. Just stick to at least a 30ml espresso and disregard the 15ml. Pull a good few shots at 30ml before bothering to inspect the puk and make corresponding grind adjustments. The 15ml shot was more of an experiment with predictable outcome, it's not ideal. See if you're happy with your espresso at 30ml once the settings are firmly seated in. It may help to ignore the puk and focus more on whether you enjoy what comes out into the cup. However, if you have it on the finest grind setting, you may need to dial it back a notch to a coarser grind for your particular beans. Assuming you now have it on the finest grind setting, it could be that with your particular coffee beans, that the coffee is being tamped in the basket too tightly, causing channeling wherein the water does not contact all surface area of the ground beans, but rather just primarily passes through the area of least resistance within the basket. Channeling can also happen for a lot of other reasons. With this machine, in the case of a 30ml espresso, we can only really try prevent it through grind size, system maintenance and bean storage/freshness. As obviously we are not manually filling a visibly dry and clean basket with a measure of weighed ground coffee, manually tamped to perfection. A normal single shot of espresso is supposed to be 30ml, the 15ml half-shot (or ristretto impersonation) is far from ideal using this machine, because the extraction time is just far too short. Even the 30ml extraction is too short. Though on this machine achieving a proper extraction time requires too much volume of liquid in the end result. Which is fine depending on your preferences, but to get the right ratios of coffee to milk in milk based drinks, volume matters. The 15 ml shot x 2 shown here was more of an experiment. I don't recommend it, its an under extraction big time. The 30ml works fairly well though, it's ok, as long as you are using freshly roasted beans on the finest grind setting with the water temp set high. Although still, this is not a proper espresso in the sense that it should really take 25 seconds or so to extract. If we were able to tamp the basket ourselves etc then we would have more control. However it is just an automatic convenience machine for very entry-level consumer. Also importantly I'd recommend that if your machine is not new, have a look through the manual on how to clean the infuser. It is actually supposed to be cleaned once a month. It may also be helpful to perform a complete descale or two to ensure that the water is freely flowing everywhere it needs to. The manual can be found in the video description. Lastly there is one very important variable we have control over at that is the coffee beans, they'll all behave differently and require adjustments to grind size accordingly. All the best.

If you use pre-ground coffee, you can only make one cup of coffee at a time. 1. Make sure the appliance is ON. 2. Turn the coffee taste selection dial on the front of the machine anticlockwise as far as it will go. (There is a symbol of ground coffee on a spoon before the MIN symbol, turn the dial all the way anticlockwise to the ground coffee on a spoon symbol) 3. Make sure the funnel is not blocked, then add one level measure of pre-ground coffee (your machine should come with a spoon or scoop to use for measuring ground coffee) 4. Place a cup under the coffee spouts. 5. Press the 1 espresso shot or 1 long black button 6. Preparation begins. Note: Don't add pre-ground coffee when the machine is off or it could spread through the inside of the machine and make a mess in there. @tyler.martin
@tyler.martin 7 ай бұрын
Yes the espresso extraction time on this machine is far from ideal. There are usually several factors that determine extraction time, though with this automatic machine - where we are not filling and tamping our own basket etc. , we do not have such control over these factors, other than being able to adjust grind size. Usually a finer grind will result in a slower extraction. You could reprogram one of the buttons as shown and set it to stop between 25 and 30 seconds, there will just likely be a lot more than 30ml of 'espresso' in your cup... which isn't an issue if you want to prioritise extraction time over viscosity and volume. Though with this machine it's not really a true extraction as it should be for many reasons. You can see that after the first 10 seconds or so its essentially just extra water channeling through, diluting the espresso.

That's strange, are you holding down the button until the adjacent green light begins flashing, and then letting go of the button, or are you letting go before that? The light indicates that you are overwriting the programming. If it isn't flashing then it's just operating as usual, and in that circumstance pressing the button again to stop the delivery of coffee at anytime will stop the coffee, but it will not reprogram the machine, it's just a manual stop function. Could this maybe be what you're doing? Other than that I'm unsure why your machine would not be reprogramming/retaining the new programming unless the computer electronics aren't functionally as they should.

@tyler.martin 9 ай бұрын
There are many reasons this could be, and with this automatic machine you do not have control over some aspects that contribute to a good extraction. It could also be that your machine is not functioning correctly. However assuming your machine is not broken in anyway, read on. So assuming you have the settings as shown, lets focus on what you do have control over now to resolve the problem. With regards to producing a decent crema you want to use freshly roasted beans, particularly robusta beans. Keep them stored in an opaque, airtight container and keep it in a dark, cool location. Also, do not have your hopper full of beans at all times, but rather just add as many as you will use that day. You need to use freshly roasted beans that have been stored appropriately for best results. With each different batch of beans you use in your machine, you will likely need to adjust your grind size accordingly, either more coarse or more fine to suit. You have to get it just right, and with each adjustment of the grind size, you will need to pull a few shots to see what each setting change has achieved. In your case I would ensure I am using fresh beans, pull 30ml shots with the finest grind setting and work my way backwards one notch coarser at a time until I get the result I want. Again, allowing the settings to show true after a few shots before making a further adjustment. I hope this helps, all the best.

Sounds like under-extraction if it's tasting sour/soapy. Stick to an extraction of at least 30ml, maybe even increase it to 40ml, disregard the 15ml setting altogether. Also press the rinse button prior to pulling the shot to pre-heat the system and flush hot water through immediately before, discard of that and then pull the shot. Make sure you're filling the container with room temp water, if it's cold then the machine won't heat it enough. Also consider descaling the machine and giving it a good flush out, as if it's not clean and fresh throughout that'll cause bad flavours - they could also be getting released from the system now that you've raised the temp as in the video; particularly if its an old machine that hasn't been cleaned for a while. Lastly you could try a fresh batch of beans, lightly roasted arabica should provide more sweetness, preferably organic. You want to only use freshly roasted beans that have been stored appropriately - only fill the bean hopper with as many you will use on that day. Hopefully something here helps. Thanks for watching

@tyler.martin you mention only filling the hopper with enough beans you'll be needing that day... May be a silly question but how do i know how many beans I'll need per shot/coffee?? Thanks!
@tyler.martin
@tyler.martin 7 ай бұрын
@@M9442 Well that advice is really only applicable if the beans aren't being used regularly, depends how long any given bean is chilling in the hopper for. However, to answer your question: You could let the hopper become empty then use a small cup to add a measure of freshly kept beans each time you make your next coffees. If it doesn't use most of the beans, then you know to fill that cup less on the next one obviously, or vice versa. Keep track of how much you add, and whether it's enough each time. Once you know after a few coffees exactly how much it uses each time, you can just place some tape on the cup or use a pen to mark a line on the cup to show where to fill it to each time. Just then keep it aside as your designated filling cup, next to where you keep your fresh coffee beans for example. You could also weigh the amount of beans once you know how much it is and keep a note of that - if you don't want to solely rely on the cup. So now you have a designated marked cup, or known weight, and this is the amount you can add each time you make a coffee, or alternatively if for example you know that you drink 3 cups a day, then add 3 measures using your custom cup when you make the first one of the day. Anyway, it's not the end of the world if there's some beans in the hopper that didn't get used. It's more so just that you don't want to have the hopper full to the brim at all times when there's no need for it, particularly if it's sitting there all week not being used. It's just best to keep the beans fresh rather than sitting in an open to atmosphere hopper for long periods.

What does ECO stands for!? Is it economy? Can it be removed for stronger coffee Thank you 😊
@tyler.martin
@tyler.martin 5 ай бұрын
Correct, the eco function 'reduces energy consumption in compliance with European regulations.' I'm not sure whether there is a difference in coffee strength with this function on or off, I have not tested, though you could be onto something. From what I can gather by reading the manual, the eco function just keeps electrical components such as the water heater on standby when not in use, rather than constantly hot and ready to go, thus saving electricity. These components should still fully function as per usual when requested, though maybe just not as instantaneously in comparison to when eco mode is not on. Understandably in this circumstance wherein eco mode is enabled, the related components will only receive the energy required for full operation on command, and therefore will then need a few seconds to heat up first for example in the case of a water heater. If you're just turning your machine on to use it and then turning it off again then there's not much point in having eco mode enabled. If you don't have access to your original manual or prefer a digital copy, it can be found here: www.delonghi.com/en-au/manuals/ecam22-110-sb-magnifica-s-automatic-coffee-machine/p/ECAM22.110.SB The instructions on how to turn eco mode on or off are on page 10 of the english version under the heading 'energy saving'.

I've seen a video where there's a switch on/off at the back of the machine to do this function where the first dial is pressed and the strength dial is turned clockwise to achieve this. Unfortunately there's no such a switch at all. Do you happen to know if that's still possible to do without that switch please!? I will watch the video link you have kindly provided. It may have this? 😊

Hi How to prepare decent big size americano?

Just pull a couple of shots, then add as much hot water as you like separately from a kettle - find your personal preference through experimenting, you can simply slowly add water to espresso, stopping frequently to taste it, then obviously stop adding water when it reaches the taste strength you like. Measure the total drink volume, subtract the volume of the shots and then you now know how much hot water you like to add. There's no real set standard on ratio, everywhere makes it differently and will argue about what is the right way. For black coffee personally on this machine, I like to sometimes pull one 35ml shot, remove and discard of the crema using a teaspoon, and then add like 200ml hot water.

@@tyler.martin Thank you M8. Is it possible to make decent black coffee but not by diluting espresso. Its automat so I mean I expect just to press button and get tasty americano. I'm going to buy this caffeemaker today that's why i'm asking again... sorry for that...

 @Damsloe Actually that's how it's prepared in cafes. The methods of making a black coffee where the espresso is not diluted is what you receive when ordering filtered coffee or French press coffee etc. If you order long black or americano coffee it is made with espresso combined with hot water. There is however a function on this machine for a 'long black coffee' (the two buttons on the right side) , but it is essentially just a long over extracted espresso, because the hot water just continues to run through the single coffee puk for an extended period to give more milliliters of coffee in the cup. Hence for the best flavour; a barista will pull an espresso for around about 25-30seconds and combine that with hot water. This machine doesn't produce the same quality you may expect from a cafe. Lastly I want to remind, I am not promoting this machine, that is not the purpose of my videos, I show how I use it, for those who may own it and look for inspiration. This machine may not meet your expectations. All the best :)

I think small espresso+ small espresso+ hot water = small americano + small americano

This is a dreadful machine. After less than 1 year my wife and I were woken at 4am to a terrible noise in our house. Our Delonghi Magnifica Smart machine was making a horrible loud noise and there was also a dreadful smell of burnt plastic. The machine had been in standby mode and somehow ground all the coffee beans and continued trying to grind beans that were not there. All the ground coffee was dumped to the bottom of the machine. Delonghi Spain are doing nothing to repair the machine that costs almost 400 euros. Terrible customer support and the repair company also ignores all contact. DO NOT BUY DELONGHI. THEY'RE UNRELIABLE AND THEY DON'T CARE WHEN IT'S FAULTY. They don't respect the warranty. Reply
