For all those looking to take your immersion to the next level - for your fantasy novel, role-playing game, or just to level up your enjoyment of an existing world! This week's topic is How to Make a Stunning Handout Map, and we'll be combining the processes from previous videos into making this beautiful combination map that you can hang on your wall, give to your players, and use to develop your worldbuilding.
Join Ryan from the Red Quills in this latest video as he discussed how to make a map, what to put in it, why you should make handouts, and how to get your players to use them.

For this tutorial video, Ryan has drawn a map of the original location, Old Gvanlar's Hall, and the dragon Axabar the Vain. For the full A2 download, check out our Journal here: red-quills.com/?p=917

For this map, Ryan has used a combination of watercolours (Montmatre watercolour pallet, red ochre and scarlet), fineliners (Artliner and Staedtler, 0.6mm - 0.3mm), and pencil (HB, B1).

Outstandingly useful and beautiful; the advice on conceptually chunking larger locations was exactly what I needed to hear. Also, I am once again shocked that the best map content on youtube has not yet broken out of small-audience purgatory.

Thank you! And don't worry, I've only been doing this for three months, and I'm happy with my growth so far!

Another great map, but even better is the commentary and explanation of what makes this type of map unique. What do you use to scan your final works? I see you're using large-format paper, which I presume doesn't it inside most consumer scanner/printer/copiers.

Thank you! Generally, to scan I use an A3 scanner on 600dpi, and make three partial scans. I'll then render them together as a .PNG in paint.net. It's a little rough, as methods go, but it works.

Great video as always. I appreciated your comment on the difference between adding things for Functional or Aesthetic purposes. It can be really easy to fall into a fit of adding Aesthetic features that have no real meaning, which leads to unnecessary clutter. What I believe differentiates a good from a great map is its spacing, with some of the most beautiful maps being those that have a clear 'purpose' behind their composition. I'll also be permanently borrowing your ORIGINAL strategy, thanks!

Thank you, I made it up for my own use - I'd love if it helped another mapmaker. I'm also forever looking at illustrated maps and despairing of actually being able to use them.

Great map! Another fantastic example to emulate, as well as a vast wealth of thoughts to inspire quality world building. I know you've said you tend to spend 6-7 hours on each map, and it definitely shows with both the depth and detail in the final product. What if, due to external circumstances, you were to be limited to 2-3 hours? Would you limit the scale, detail, or possibly even the physical size of the map? Something else? I find myself running into time constraints often and don't often have 6 hours to dedicate to the map.

It's something that's come up recently - I might make a video on making maps constrained to different times, and the techniques to save time

You read my mind! I have the same time constraint question. Especially cause I find if I don't finish something in one sitting I'll leave it in draw somewhere gathering dust 😅

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the cities one - I'll probably follow it up with a less stylised version someday soon.
