This storage shelf solution can be made as easy as putting up some 2x4's or as complicated as building large shop cabinets. I like the way that the storage cabinets came out in the end, and as the video explains I enclosed everything to keep the shop sawdust off of everything we store.

Very nice demonstration. This is exactly what I planned for my garage, basic 2*4 shelf and adding doors later if I want. Just have one concern: when I check 2*4 shelf designs around youtube, lots of comments are against the idea of putting weight on screws. For example, this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pZpgnq6Tlb3UXYk.html&lc=UgyBS9jao4SECld-uql4AaABAg, and this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMeUY5qrnbaVZ6c.html&lc=UgzcmCNvWGlcV9SDlRF4AaABAg. What's your opinion from your two years' experience with those shelves? Would glue help? Shall I double up the 2*4s under shelves to transfer the weight? Thanks a lot.
@Hubbmade

Xirun Chen I have had absolutely no problems with the shelves. Some people said that 2 x 4’s were the wrong thing to use and plywood would be better, however I have had opportunity to remove some of the 2 x 4‘s to fit tall things in the shelves and was very glad that I didn’t have to cut out some plywood. As far as the screws go I haven’t had any break but if you’re concerned about it glue would probably help. I see what they’re talking about but it seems like an unnecessary concern. Either that or I used more screws than I really needed to and “overbuilt“ the shelves. Best of luck on your shelf project!

Agree with the shelve comments. I don't have the time to cut all those 2x4s. Home center would have ripped the plywood. And plywood is engineered for the application. 2x4s aren't engineered for lateral loads on the face. That being said the span is short enough to not be an issue. This is not to be critical but to help others who are looking to build. In many ways this project could be accomplished faster, better and cheaper.

Hubbard's Handmade, I'm a serial over builder. There's a several hundred pound chicken coop in the yard or furniture around the house with extra railings or supports to prove it. If it costs more I really don't care - it usually resulted from me going off script with someone else's plans and/or it can survive my kids being kids. Both are satisfying.

Next time you use those European hinges, put both in the holes, then put a straight edge (level, carpenters square etc) actoss the back of each to ensure they are parallel to each other and not binding. The way you did it, follows the top and bottom of the doors, not necessarilly parallel.

I built a framing wall inside the pole barn garage, totally forgetting about the door, and the realized how hard it was going to be to install. I got around it by maneuvering. Keep in mind there was a truck in process of restoration in the way, with no wheels, so I couldn't move the truck. I actually hoisted the wall over the truck to get it in place.

Lag Screws and options. Only change I would make is to use lag screws to hold up the weight bearing horizontal 2x4's (at the very least on the one connected to the wall. That being said - great design. Something I am curious about. I want to be able to move an 8 foot rolling workbench into the lower level of the shelving unit (effectively ruling out supporting 2x4 beams on the front side except for the sides of the shelving unit). However, my concern is the structural integrity of such a design. I could try to add flat metal support bars to the front horizontal 2x4's to give them additional structural integrity. Or I guess I could also run vertical 2x4's into ceiling and lag screw them into the ceiling support beams. However, my garage has 12 foot ceilings and getting to that height is a bit of a challenge. I love the cabinet option with your design, as it allows for a clean looking storage unit. Any thoughts?

This is a great build. May I know why you used 2x4s for the shelving instead of just longer ply sheets ? Just asthaetics? Makes it look like a deck floor though, which is a nice variegation.

Two reasons: 1. I wanted the added strength that the 2 x 4‘s would give. 2. Modular design. I have already had to take out a section of 2 x 4 shelf to make room for a water softener which was too big to fit under the lowest shelf. This was easy to do by unscrewing a few 2 x 4 Thanks for your interest in my video and projects!

Glad you enjoyed it! We always have a lot of laughs around my house/shop! The shelf construction was done in a weekend plus a few hours throughout the next week. It’s not too difficult of a project... stop motion on the other hand is… Time consuming!

Great video! My carpentry skills are at a beginner’s level. I’m wondering if doing this is within my capability. I’d love to do it.

Thanks! If you stop at the basic 2x4 shelf stage this is a super easy beginners project. The finishing with plywood might be a bit more tricky, but anybody can do it with practice and some patience.

Great job and looks good. Very nicely filmed, and obviously kudos to the producer - your son!! Quick questions - how long did it take and approx what was the cost? Thanks for sharing.

Depending on skill level plan for 2-4 days work. We went to a discount (imperfect) building store, so the plywood was cheaper. If I remember right it was 6-7 sheets of 1/2 plywood and a bunch of 2x4s. total was roughly $350-400. not including hardware and screws. Prices have gone up a bit in the last several years so I’d budget at least $500-600 now. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

I like the cabinets. The fronts/doors look amazing. But PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.....LOWER THAT TABLE SAW BLADE. It only needs to be just above the top surface of the material you are cutting, say (1/4" - 1/2"). good job on that project.

Seriously great video! May I ask what type of ply and hinges you used for your doors? Is that 3/4” ply?
@Hubbmade

Thanks! It is prefinished half inch maple plywood. You can find the hinges in the video description

Any issues with the plywood warping? Was it successful in keeping the dust out? My wife complains about the same thing but I'm wondering if I would have to put a weatherstripping around the door to truly keep everything dust free.
@Hubbmade
@Hubbmade 5 жыл бұрын
No problem with warping. A little bit of dust still gets in though so some weatherstripping around the edges it’s a good idea!

What was your cost in material? I too am needing to do a similar project and don't see the need for melanine or mdf
