Back again with Steven Cornett of Nature's Always Right. In this video I asked him to share how me makes his potting soil and seed starting mix in bulk.
We go through his entire process of making his mix from scratch along with the reasoning BEHIND why he does it the way he does it.
In short:
- 1/3 peat moss
- 1/3 perlite (medium and fine grain)
- 1/3 home-made compost
- Handful of Azomite
- Handful of kelp meal
- Home-made worm tea to moisten and inoculate
It's a powerful mix that starts your plants out with LIVING soil instead of store-bought sterile soil. This is really important in Steven's farm - he wants to play WITH nature's systems instead of against them...and the living soil potting mix is a huge part of it.

Excellent mix...gonna try this mix . Love his easy to understand , explanations of the components. 14:37 = Nitrogen 1 - Phosphorus 0 - Potassium -2 (N) Nitrogen = Leafy greens (P) Phosphorus = Blooming / fruiting veggies (K) Potassium = Root plants/ bulbs 16:25 Never seen a TEA made like this...very Cool I usually just do 1part vermiculture worm tea to 10 part water and stir vigourously for 5 min with my power drill mixer...and apply to my plants roots...

You can always start with some high quality store bought potting mix until you feel comfortable doing your own mix. But in all honesty its just getting all the ingredients once and mixing them together. - Coco coir/peat moss, you can get them in dried compressed cubes, adds no nutrition but holds moisture - Compost, adds structure, nutrition, even beneficial bacteria (especially worm compost). We have disposal centers selling these for almost nothing, if you can't make your own or your own isn't sufficient. Or get something of your choice. If you have, you can additionally toss a handful of any granular fertilizer of your choice in there. Same effect/purpose - Perlite, basically little rocks. Helps drainage so things dont get sopping wet. Just order a big bag for a good price, it'll last you years That's basically the same ingredients for store bought potting mix. By mixing it yourself you can get away cheaper (basically by dodging the premium for acquiring and mixing ingredients) and also can control the quality yourself. And that's everything you have to know for starters.

interesting video and good soil recipe, I use a similar recipe (40, 40, 20) and use a labor saving cement mixer to thoroughly mix my soil. why not pour your peat moss and perlite in a tote to make it easier to shovel it out, I do this and then use a two gallon bucket to scoop the peat moss or perlite out of the tote. I also wet my peat moss and perlite to dampen the dust. when you put your soil in the tote you could put the lid on, wrap bungee cords around the tote and flip the tote over a few times to thoroughly mix it. happy gardening to you

I thought it is better to use Vermiculite for Seed starting mixes, because it absorbs and retains moisture and therefore prevent fluctuations of moisture content in the mix (which is not good for tender seedlings).

Thank you for sharing! Does anyone have any tips for direct sowing seeds? I want to give them the best chance with direct sowing them. I can't do the starting seeds set up right now because I don't have those supplies & containers. Could I use a layer sterile mix/soil over the fertile or fertilized mix/soil so the seeds are free of possible fungus gnats? Or will the fungus gnats go right up through that layer of sterile soil to get to the seeds when they begin to sprout?

Great advice! I usually throw my unscreened compost back onto the pile. As a long time gardener, I strongly recommend the use of a mask when mixing soil so that you too can become a long time gardener!😉 FYI..... "If someone has really full, thick eyebrows, it means many things: they're very decisive, they have a natural self-confidence, and they feel like they can figure anything out," "They're very logical people and tend to be kind of linear (sequential) in how they do things. They also like to be physically active."

I’ve seen a lot of videos of people making and mixing their own potting mix and using a wheelbarrow, a tarp sheet, or some kind of large plastic box to do the mixing, but why not use a tumbler composter to do it? Just fill the tumbler with all the ingredients, close it us and then spin it slowly, quickly, whatever, until it’s all mixed. All you gotta do then is put a wheelbarrow under it, open the hatch, and pour the mix out. It’ll save a lot of physical effort and won’t give you a bad back.
