Quick and easy DIY sewing project idea for beginners to make and sew a pillow cover. I'll be making a beautiful patchwork quilt block pattern using small leftover fabric scraps!
This is also a great idea to recycle the scrap waste from your stash.
I'll also be showing you how to use the quilt as you go technique for making this scrap quilt block. Some people also call it the Stich and Flip technique and what that means is you're creating a complete pattern, ready to you, block by block of fabric.

Have you ever tried making an XL Quilt as you go quilt block? What would you do differently? This was so much fun, I can totally see a whole quilt made with several blocks just like these. Also, did you know about the tip for keeping your thread in the needle when you're using the thread cutting feature on your sewing machine? Let me know and enjoy!

Made a standard sized pillow sham to use up scraps to go with those in a Queen-sized quilt. Have also taken a small extra pieced block as the center for this style of scrappy string pieced block. Fun!

When you run out of scraps: if there is a quilt shop near you, they often have classes which generate lots of strips. The quilt shop near me sells bags of those strip packs for very cheap, they also sell larger scrap fabric pieces by the pound. That is how I first attempted to learn how to quilt blocks when I didn’t have a lot of money for fabric.

There's not many fabric stores within easy driving distance for me. The one that's about 30 minutes away is a small one and the ladies Make quilts. They have a basket now and then filled with scraps for a couple dollars a piece. There's some cute pieces for kids that I wouldn't normally buy. Got one with chickens on it and made my mom a hexy flower with chickens on it to sew to a crazy quilt. A real crazy crazy quote 🙃

I don't have a thread cutter because I use vintage Singer sewing machines with only a straight stitch for quilt piecing . Machines that can do zig-zag never have as straight of a stitch as a vintage straight stitch machine or that Juki that everybody likes so much. This is a terrific way to make a summer quilt or a blanket for tummy time for people who have babies.. By sewing it to a piece of fabric instead of using paper finishes it all in one step. My scrap pile just keeps getting bigger and I don't have any kind of organization other than a box. I definitely enjoyed your video and I hope you continue to make them.

I agree, vintage sewing machines sew straight stich like nothing else!. I guess the less machines do, the better they are at it! I have a couple of videos on scrap organization, don't know if you've watched any. And yeah, this type of quilt just screams summer! 😀

1:42 There is a difference, but only a small one. QAYG is used to describe a project when you have batting/wadding as your foundation rather than a piece of fabric. Then you join the quilt blocks together with sashing strips and add backing fabric.

I know this technique as QUILT AS YOU GO /QAYG or foundation piecing ... Can be done with a backing ....or .... without a backing that is added on later. Depends upon what you want to do with your made fabric ... what project you use it for.

What is the purpose of sewing it to the white backing? Couldn't you just sew scraps together and then cut to square?
@seweasybysandy
@seweasybysandy 2 ай бұрын
You could but for those smaller pieces it would be harder. This way you get a clean back and if you used batting between the two or instead of the back, you would have a quilted quilt block immediately.
