I have very clayey subsoil, will this have too many nutrients to put in the pond? Some of the subsoil is white it’s got so much clay

I discovered you a few days ago and love everything you do. This was so infomative. I made a little pond last year and although it's pretty, my liner is showing a little in the pond so I'm going to redo everything with the extra fleece on top and soil. I love that you not just build ponds but you care so much for all the insects, birds, animals and plants. That's always been my way of thinking and I have never came across anybody that really cares about all of them. LOVE it. Thank you so much.

We live on over 7 acres and this year i am going to put in a bigger pond as well and also not mow a big area for all the wild flowers. Every year i get rid of more grass and plant lots of flowers. I live in Wisconsin, USA so the 6 month winters are long and aweful but I am very excited about all the new things I'm going to do to the garden this year. Keep up the good work!

I have watched so many pond videos that I paralysed myself with information. Your videos have been very informative and answered all the little questions I have been concerned about. Nice job chap! I clear out one of my clients wildlife ponds when necessary. I always search meticulously whatever I take out. We have a thriving community of great crested newts, Dragon and Damsal flies, and more snails than you can poke a stick at!

Many thanks for making the vid. The mrs has been banging on about me making her a wildlife pond but I have been at a loss how to do it. Your 3 vids make it look easy to do, but as always you have many years of experience to make it look easy. Anyways, measuring up and costing the mats. Btw, just bought the book. I watched the time lapse video for this pond. Then the full 3 series. We are looking to make a shallow (for child safety) wildlife pond in a Japanese garden. This size and type of pond will work if adapted slightly by adding more stones in the well to make it shallow that can be removed in the future. Thanks for the inspiration and good explanations. No shameless plugging of your book all the way through you waited until the end. I bought it straight away though. Lol

Hi Joel. I've watched this 3-part series twice and am about to move forward with my pond based on your brilliant design recommendations. I have one concern though: is there no problem with water seeping behind the liner at the cut edges? Thanks so much for making these videos for us! I made my first pond last year and I'm on a mission to educate Americans about the natural pond technique. It's unusual here, and we need many more of these.

I have just watched the three videos back to back Joel. What an oasis that pond has no doubt become. They are a masterclass and a credit to you. I have learned loads. A friend of mine has asked for my help to add a pond to his garden and now I can't wait to get at it 😊. I love the selection of plants you are stocking the pond with and their importance to our wildlife. Purple Loosestrife has always been a particularly favourite of mine. This 3 part series was so inspiring, thank you! I am just starting to build the knowledge (from a base of not a lot!) to do exactly this for myself and I'm so excited to get started. This step by step guide is really useful to give people like me the confidence to give it a go. Thank you, so very much Oliver - what a lovely comment and it really does spur me on to read that so many people are considering ponds, they're so important for nature :) With the edges, if left with soil, like the one in the video, I would usually sow a pond-edge wildflower seed mixture, which would be damp loving wildflowers and grasses - if you need any more help and are free on Sunday 28th at 3pm do join us as I'll be speaking about my garden and the pond in it :) Happy to help here if you can't make it of course. I've only recently discovered your videos and am now binge watching. This series is great as I want to replace the rigid plastic pond I put in years ago with something bigger and more natural. The pond I installed has done a job but at only 50cm deep, was unable to stop the only female frog who visited being frozen to death (I've never had spawn). So I want to create a new one 3 feet deep but can't go any wider than this one here.

Hi Erin - thank you, so glad this was helpful. You can incorporate running water - I'll put a link below to a video so you can see one of the many installed before - it's the filters you have to be careful of due to them "sucking" up most tiny creatures, but in these ponds there's no need for filtration or running water as the oxygenating plants keep these ponds clear. How do you prevent slope erosion where there's no rocks, are the plants going to help mitigate this?

I love that you love the insect hotel 😊👍 As for the soil erosion, it is getting the gradient of the side right so that it isn’t too steep for the soil to stay there on its own. The plants will certainly help the soil stay put when their roots become established, just like on a bank next to a road with trees on it etc. Hope that helps. Here if you need any more advice 👍😁

Great trio of highly inspirational and educational films. We'll certainly be following your ideas. Quick question:- We're in Birmingham, West Midlands. Our Top-soil is clay, dig down to a spades depth and you find clay that is blue/grey or yellow/grey ! I've also just watched this series back to back. Wonderful! Your time and detail is so appreciated! I am located in the Chicago area, zone 5B, so it can be in the teens Fahrenheit (at least overnight) for much of December thru February. I'm slowly but surely getting rid of my grass and moving more toward a permaculture garden style. Would love to have this type/size pond in my yard but am wondering if it's too cold here for this natural style. I'd hate to kill any wildlife making a home in the pond as the water would assuredly freeze in the winter.

Hi there - most amphibians will leave a pond and hibernate in undergrowth, woodpiles and similar habitat during the winter and other creatures like dragonflies etc will stay at the bottom of the pond, obviously the deeper you can make the pond the better - hope this helps encourage you to make one of these fantastic habitats for wildlife, the rewards in Spring, Summer and Autumn with creatures that visit will make it worth your while :) Best wishes, and thanks for your kind words - Joel

Firstly, thank you for your kind words, they really do make a difference after a hard day at work! These ponds only need replenishing in very dry/hot weather (wind also plays a part in evaporation of water) but they don't need replenishing anymore than a standard/fibreglass pond. Hi Joel, loved these vids - followed much of your instruction and have been buzzing to see my pond (2mtr x 3mtr) teeming with life. I am having string algae issue this year though - I have added Barley Straw solution twice, manually removed much of it. Its not suffocating it and insect life still fine etc... but I recently decided to go with trying to cover the surface a bit more - up the 50% - so I added azolla carolina today - hoping this will extract nutrients etc... and I can easily control with a rake. Is this something you would be ok with or a no no? seeing conflicting opinions online. Any help much appreciated.

Quick question: is "emergent" referring to the area just in the water, and is "marginal" just outside the water but wet because it touches the edge? I wasn't exactly sure of these delineations and would be very grateful for conformation if you had a minute. Also, I noticed you mentioned it was June when you planted for the pond in the video. Hi. Thanks for finding the channel. I’m so pleased the videos will be of use to you. Limestone will be fine, it may blow slightly in the frost, but that won’t affect the pond. Natural rain water is of course better than tap water, but if you’re just topping up now and again, it shouldn’t affect the wildlife. Hope that helps 😊

Capetown... sigh... one of the places on my "must visit asap" list! I am absolutely thrilled this video is encouraging you to make a pond in this way and to know it's going to be in one of the areas I might visit one day is great :) To keep the pond clear I believe you'll have access to hornwort (sometimes known as coontail) and this is one of the best oxygenators to keep ponds clear. I always recommend about 60 to 70% of surface coverage with lilies or other native floating leaved plants to keep the water clear and cool. Hi, Fantastic informative videos. I have recently moved into my present house and whilst reorganising the garden we came across a Great Crested Newt, which was exciting, so we thought to build a wildlife pond. however the garden is quite narrow. Any way, a long story short...a neighbour gave us a new preformed pond, quite big 120cmx 80cm, we have so far dug the hole and inserted the pond, my question is, should we put in subsoil on bottom and on the ledges? I can't imagine that it would stay there...?....we shall put in rocks, pebbles, etc and build slopes so there are exits and entrances....... We have a rain water butt so will fill it with that, and buy the plants you recommend. Also thought to get a solar water fountain to aerate the water, any tips recommendations for preformed ponds welcome. Many thanks , Carol, Kent uk

Hi there :) Thanks so much for your kind words - they do make a difference :) What a fantastic find, I often have people saying that they find frogs/newts in their gardens and they don't even have a pond. This is usually autumn time onwards when they will have left ponds - they will use ponds primarily for breeding and once the season is over they are often found in gardens finding insects, invertebrates etc to dine on :) You're right re the subsoil not settling in a pre-formed pond, so don't worry about that. You won't need any artificial filtration once you have the right pond plants in Carol, you will certainly have an effective pond by what you have described above, and you've obviously put a lot of thought into this - please do feel free to send me an email to hazelwoodlandscapes@hotmail.com and maybe a few photos and I can give you some pointers to ensure it is a success :) Best wishes to you and yours - Joel

This whole series has been amazing, and informative. It has definitely inspired me to expand my small rain garden into a small pond. Thank you so much! My biggest obstacle is I'm sitting on several feet of hard packed clay (which led to the rain garden because of flooding due to poor drainage). This brings me to my next concern: mosquitoes. With this being a standing body of water, what would you suggest to keep them and their larvae under control? I have several nearby pollinator gardens already, along with my organic vegetable gardens, and my bird feeders are always busy. My food forest is being planted in the area as well using the "Back to Eden" method (heavy base of wood chip mulch). I am a strong believer of Aldo Leopolds Land Ethic, viewing nature and the Earth as a true sentient being, and try my best to make sure my gardens are as much in harmony with nature as possible. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated, especially about the mosquitoes, and with perennial plant suggestions (USDA Zone 6a, just North of Detroit, Michigan, USA). Thank you, again, and keep up the amazing work!

Thanks for the video’s Joel I wish I saw these Vedic before starting mine as I fill like I built my pond completely wrong as there where mix answer for putting soil into the pond or in my case a large pond about 30ft fill like when summer comes next year I think I will need to do some think about it as it’s still fairly new. Hi Joel, I think i followed your instuctions correctly and built a wildlife pond. Question: How do you stop the capillary action at the edges with all the soil. Ive tried your method but it hasnt worked. My pond level will drop easily and inch per day. Ive managed to curtail it a little by exposing the liner but its not what i wanted from my pond. What advice to give to prevent it from happening.

Thanks for doing this Joel - really adds some meat to the bones of the earlier video and your excellent book. For a 2.5m x 2m pond, what would you say are the optimal numbers of plants in each of the 4 categories? I live in urban Essex, so am likely to have really claggy/clay soil, with little by way of sub soil. I'd rather buy some sub soil in and plant directly, rather than use plastic baskets, but don't want to overcrowd a pond or leave it too sparse. Many thanks and congratulations again.

Pound dug (3.4 M long x 2.6 M wide), teardrop shap. Used the subsoil but mainly clay dug from pond and another part of garden. Very cloudy for 2 days but after that clear. Sides all trimed and covered with the remaining sub soil/clay. Looks great! thanks to your advice. Realised I'm not 21 anymore! Question: it's late September; is it too late in the year to plant out?

I really appreciate hearing how the advice has helped and it sounds like you've done a fantastic job! Re planting out, autumn is the best time as it allows the plants to get their "feet" in and establish in time for the colder weather. Hi Joel I want to firstly say thanks for this great series of videos, I've followed your method about a month ago and have been really pleased with the end result. Admittedly I think the soil I used in filling the pond may have been a little nutrient rich as after about 10 days or so there was a big algae bloom but that soon disappeared. I'm hoping you might be able to give me some advice. So I've introduced a lot of pond plants, including a number of oxygenators and some marigolds around the edges, and noticed a lot hoverflys not long after. But recently I can see a lot of hoverfly larvae have taken up residence there, I'm reading this is a sign of bad water quality. I'm finding it hard to find out how to improve water quality in a wildlife pond though? Is there anything I should be doing here or is it early days?

Hi Andy - so sorry for the delay - I've been away in Scotland and just trying to catch up with the comments. Firstly, thank you so much for your kind comments, I am so glad the channel has been of help. It sounds like you've done the right thing and the oxygenators will keep the water clear and any silt will eventually settle. Hoverflies will lay their eggs in most water bodies, I have some in the barrel pond and that has no soil etc apart from the small amount in the baskets. They are great pollinators and their larvae will be eaten by other creatures, but the hoverflies themselves will eat aphids - wait a little while and all should balance out :) I have a fair few around my pond and they rather angrily defend their territory around the pond plants! this was great, thanks joel. i'm in portugal and about to get cracking on making my wildlife pond in the garden. was wondering if i can add a salamander or two? also, my garden is not flat (about 3% slope) - any advice on how to adapt things for that?

My pond is smaller than this but just liner and no soil except in the deepest part. Frogs use it and we get plenty of tadpoles but not as good as it could be I feel after watching your videos.

Really enjoyed your three part series, very well explained and detailed.... how many hours total did it take you to make this specific pond? I am from Canada where winters are pretty harsh, any pointers would be appreciated! Thank you for sharing !

Hi there - I'm so glad this was helpful to you. It took around 3 days to do this pond single-handedly, I couldn't utilise a barrow either due to the steep steps at the rear of the property though ;) I would recommend going as big and deep as possible, so that the water doesn't completely freeze to the bottom in the coldest spells.
