FIRST!! Also, my rate started out at exactly that, $50 for photo. I'm now making around $325-$500. You have to be careful though about the variations because the lighting mood and them changes for each backdrop color. I've had a lot of colleagues edit themselves right out of work, which those clients have come to me. The sad part is that I have warned people and told them over and over what would happen. But arrogance gets people no where. Again, keep people aware about this. DON'T LIGHT THE SAME WAY! Every backdrop means a different type of lighting based on the tone, the company, the purpose, and the skin type. Its all about how the light reflects and wraps.

A little late but thanks for the video, man. Very informative. Quick question, if you don't mind. It looks like the photos you were taking are more of a half body shot compared to a headshot. Well, at least from some of the photos you shown like the ones you were doing earlier in your headshot career. Is this accurate? Do you recommend beginner headshot photographers to do the same? Like, do 1 finished photo and make that photo more of a half body shot?

Hey Thomas! The easiest method is showing them the previews on camera right after we take them and have them pick their top favorite or top 3 and I’ll pick the final one if it’s for 1 headshot. You could also send the raw previews and have them pick their favorite after, just might be a headache to do that with a lot of headshots. Thanks for watching!

ive been shooting photos (not all of them good) since 1976. i worked for 2 newspapers (one being a Gannett News) before 8 years in the Air Force where we shot a LOT of officer promotion photos (head/shoulders), and of course did PJ work and technical documentation. ive been out of the Air Force 32 years and working on and off doing freelance photography (which of course doesnt pay for crap) and i was asked for a quote for 7 headshots for the local Double Tree hotel. they wanted NOTHING too fancy, it was mostly for inter-company email/memo etc. i quoted $300 (1/2 day rate) and they could bring in as many people as they wanted, in a 3-1/2 hour block. i never got a return call. too expensive? too cheap? it was only an 'exercise' to say "we got quotes..." most of all i do now is portraits for one of the high school marching bands but theyre on spec and theyre made available for sale. of course i only sell half dozen per year... now im trying to connect with the local museum who i worked with in the past photographing artifacts that they had no documentation on and ended up shooting nearly the entire collection. i contacted the director who i know, and offered headshots for their staff of 5-7 people for FREE. she has to think about it. its been 3 days of 'thinking' about it... like Mick said, "I can't give it away on 7th avenue"
@AndreiRestrepo

Thanks for sharing your story! Honestly, I'd say too cheap, but that's crazy you never heard back. @crollinsphoto

Or better yet, photograph them on a green screen, chromachrome green. That way there is no limit as to what background you can put back there. Just make sure they are at least 3 to 3/12 ft minimum from the green backdrop and do not light the backdrop separately, to keep from green spill on their heads and such.
@AndreiRestrepo
@AndreiRestrepo Жыл бұрын
Hey Charles! Interesting! I haven’t done much green screen work, definitely could be a good idea to do that if you definitely intend to change the background for sure!
@mikecollins5261

I'd never use green screen. Not for business. Just use white or gray. It drops out just as easily and you will never have that green screen spill in the hair since the white and gray are neutral. And white and gray are usually what they want most times anyway.

@AndreiRestrepo
@AndreiRestrepo Жыл бұрын
Yep! For smaller groupings like real estate teams, I’ll reduce the cost to maybe $125 or $100 / headshot maybe. But bigger companies with bigger marketing budgets don’t have an issue to do $150 x 47, I’ve done it quite a few times with a medical company in my area!

Hey! Hmm, good question. I use SmugMug for delivering portrait galleries and they can download the photos, order different prints, and a few other perks. Only thing it can’t do is collect payment or invoice. For the longest time I just used PayPal for invoicing but now I use Stripe and it works great.

If your charging $50 for 1 head shot photo, do you take mutiple and the choose one to edit? I can't see you only taking one photo per client though.
@AndreiRestrepo
@AndreiRestrepo Жыл бұрын
Correct! I’ll definitely come home with 10-25 or so per client, but have them either pick their favorite on location, or send previews. If I’m shooting say, 30-40 headshots for a company, I’ll spend 5 min or so with each person and have them choose they’re favorite right there by rating it in camera to make the process a lot smoother. Thanks for watching!

Why do you need a flash umbrella instead of a regular flash mounted on your camera?
@AndreiRestrepo
@AndreiRestrepo 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Great question. The flash coming directly from an on-camera flash is very harsh. If you shoot it directly at your subject, it will look very unflattering. You use a softbox or umbrella, to diffuse the light so when it hits your subject, it’s soft and diffused, making it flattering on them! The more diffusion a softbox has, the softer and nicer the light, no one wants harsh light for headshots or any type of portraits really. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching !

@@AndreiRestrepo it does help, so it’s better to invest in a flash umbrella than a mount flash? I need it for church work/weddings/gym shots etc…and I am undecided.

The umbrellas or softboxes don’t come with a flash, you take a regular mount flash and insert it into any of those attachments. Personally I’d go with a soft box, best results when doing off camera flash photography. For weddings, you can just bounce the flash without anything off the ceiling or a wall too

Interesting you use a beauty dish, not the softest light I think the word beauty dish is one of the biggest misnomers in Photography people think that it’s going bring out beauty, quite the contrary, usually exposes every flaw in a persons face But it seems to work for you so keep running with it

Hey! Thanks, yeah I’ve just used softboxes like this for the longest time, especially for video. And essentially these beauty dishes are slightly softer too, especially the bigger ones. What do you use? Thanks for watching!

1000 $ for an image??! Rip off.

No? Where did I say that? Around $150 per image, shooting multiple headshots at once, to make a few thousand from a shoot.
