I had planned to make Temple Blocks for a while to add to my growing collection of Percussion Instruments, many of them handmade for use in Drum Circles. Temple Blocks are a type of Drum similar to Frog Blocks.
I started this project during the Winter and decided to finish it this week.
I have not seen a set of Tunable / Tuneable Temple Blocks before, only open or closed variations and I wanted to create a New Design / Version that the tone could be changed or fine tuned by moving a baffle on the back.
The end result works exactly as I had planned and I am designing a variation for the future that will provide even more scope for playing.
I also wanted these to be played on the ground as children attend the Drum Circle. They can easily be converted to attach to a Drum Stand for a drummer to add to his kit.
The Temple Blocks are made from 12mm Baltic Birch Plywood and experimenting with other thicknesses or solid woods would give a different yet usable result.
This woodworking project was mostly built using power tools, but it can be adapted to use hand tools.
I will have detailed plans including the exact dimensions for the ones I made in the video available at a future date. These will be available for a small cost.
I like the idea of making my own Tools, especially if it is a Tool that is not easily found or readily available. Handmade Tools give great satisfaction and for me it is fun knowing that I created something to help me better improve my woodworking experience.

Namaste Chris , nice I think I should try it as my son is a drummer in a band 😊 but not having table saw is a issue 😊🕉

Mahendra Tiwari hey mate. I don't think a table saw is at all necessary ro make these drums. If you're thinking of the side joints it would be perfectly acceptable to just butt the surfaces together and glue and nail or screw. Actually this would be a super beginner or dad-and-son project. Give it a try mate!

Namaste Mahendra :) As Mark says it could be done using a handsaw and a few basic tools. i would also love to see a video if you make them :) Check out Mark's channel also if you haven't already, he uses a lot of great techniques for building his instruments ॐ

I was thinking it would be cool if the back, instead of opening wider/narrower to tune, have the back go deeper in to or out of the chamber. You could have one panel be stationary, attach a threaded shaft to a second panel. The threaded shaft would have to thread through a nut embedded in the stationary panel. The tip of the threaded shaft would have to be modified so that it spins freely inside the movable panel within the chamber. Attach a wing nut and a regular nut at the end to make a knob to turn. Essentially, it would be like an adjustable plunger you could use to tune each block.

First of all Chris thank you so much for the shout out - that was very kind! I really enjoyed this vid, even making the stand was fascinating. I wondered how the tuner was going to work - at first I assumed it would be a sort of plunger, altering the depth of the box. Your solution is much neater. Terrific vid mate, great job and thanks again.

Thank you Mark :) I've made tons of percussion over the last 30 or so years and I never understood why these are not available. I'm sure they will be soon after this :D The ability to change the tone really helps. i hope the shout out helps mate. Blessings ॐ

Namaste Bram mate :) Thank you :) I might plan to record a percussion piece using what I have. I watched how to make Tabla in India and the process is difficult because the ingredients and methods of making the Syahi is a well kept secret and it differs between makers. I have a set that I had made for me many years ago and I really need to play more. the Dayan is made from Mango and the Duggi is made from a combination of metals around a brass bowl :) I love playing them ॐ
