In this video you will see how l make the base to my whirligigs. all home made in wood.
Hi
Let me introduce myself to you, My name it Ted but everyone now calls me Mr Whirlgigs even the grand children.
Why whirligigs you ask ? being retired l needed a hobby so l made my 1st whirligig in the autumn of 2020 which was Berty the Bear he still going strong in the garden now. We started to sell the odd one to the neighbours and family l think they just felt sorry for me, but it went from strength to strength. So now I've started to sell them on eBay.

I use 10 mm Plastic knitting needles for bearings that you find at Thrift Stores

Absolutely nothing wrong with being chatty! I've seen some that have a whole box for the workings and others just a slot along the bottom of a board. It's probably to one's own taste, eh? Thanks for the video, i was looking for how to do your up & down moves and if the drive shaft has🤔to be one continueous line? or some i see looks like a simple hook that goes round. Well thank you much🙂!

Use a plastic straw for a liner

You were asking about bushings for the mounting shaft... Pen turners use a brass tube that is 7mm. I'm pretty sure that the rod that you'd like to use can match the inner diameter.

Did you find your liner? If you’re sticking with nylon, I would think you could find tubing the ID you wanted, then cut lengths you need to the depth. FWIW, I’d go with Rick Jarosz’ suggestion. I appreciate your time and construction explanations, they’re helpful in imagining construction!

If you have the threaded rod, it seems to me with the wobble, that would wear into plastic liner over time…if there was a plastic liner. Less so with a metal liner. That is my uninformed thought.🙂

Have had a whirligig in the garden for 3 years with no problems but you can always change the plastic bearings

Thanks for sharing your knowledge ,they look facinating,im a welder at heart but ive just got a wood shop together and i fancy messing with some wood its cleaner, feel free to check my channel out its quite diverse , will email you for details of the plastic sleeves thanks again ,Ant a Yorkshire man in Wales lol.
