In this video I’m gonna show you how to make Lap siding (aka) Clapboard siding using nothing more than a simple 5/8 wood shim. I’ll be doing this on the Woodmizer LT15. No special Jigs needed to achieve the same quality of cuts.

I KNEW it could be this easy. Even if the cant wants to tilt, just add another 'shim' for balance. Take your time, and it's easy peasy. Thank You for sharing!

@@make-somedust Mill ordered and should ship in a few weeks. Yay. Watching this again to re-learn, and realized you have a drum firewood cleaner in the background! Used the money saved on your shim to spend on that!! Awesome! My wife would be scrambling around with a bucket trying to re-coup the scraps underneath! LOL!

You showing this simple and effective way to make lap siding is what we need more of. I think unless your trying to match an existing siding... a sharp blade would work fine. A few blade swirl marks just gives it a little character. And i gave you a little love.😂

I used VG redwood siding when I built my house in 1983. Woodpeckers have caused me to try to find some more of that very rare and expensive siding. At the price I’d have to pay, driving my truck to coastal CA from Oregon to a mill, and buy it, I’d almost be even to buy a mill, buy a redwood log, and using your shim technique, make the beveled siding myself….

And at the end of the day, you have a mill to make other lumber or sell it for more than the purchase price. Good luck thanks for watching.

Hey Chuck. I've been doing this since 2015. The last time I did it I glued my square piece to 1" strip so the jig would rest on three bunks. The pines and some softer hard wood often leave feathers even with a new blade. Brent

Thanks for confirming it’s not the blade. I’ve notice some wood cuts real clean others leave that feather.

I've been planning on doing just this for some siding I need, good to see it works. And, I too find the fraying/feathering happens with sharp and dull blades alike, unpredictably from log to log. I think it's more a factor of how the log grows and the constitution of the wood fibres that result from individual growing conditions. I checked out your other videos and you've got yourself a new subscriber. Maybe you might find something of interest on my channel, or not. Either way thanks in advance for checking it out if you decide to and keep the videos coming.

VERY simple solution. Do you have any issues with the cant not being clamped?
@make-somedust
@make-somedust 9 ай бұрын
At a certain point I find it best to leave several boards in place after the cut to add weight which helps hold the final cuts. Other options would be to start your cut about 2’ then clamp the back end and continue. Then about midway add another clamp, wash rinse repeat

Very simple and effective !! Is it easy or difficult to paint rough, (unplained) lap siding ? Does running hand belt sander over the lap siding make it easier to paint ? Cheers from N.E. Ohio
@make-somedust
@make-somedust 9 ай бұрын
Straight off the mill a palm sander would be plenty. Good sharp blade is the trick. Pretty easy to paint in my opinion, but I’m not a painter. Lol

I sticker and let them dry and as your installing hit it with a belt sander. I just hit it once with a medium but you can make them smooth as you want. My siding is 3/4 x 6 no bevel. I could run it through my planer but I don't care for the look. Sharp blade is the best way to start. You will use a lot less paint too.

Is there a way to run through planner to smooth face of board?
@make-somedust
@make-somedust 10 ай бұрын
Sure can, use a second piece as a jig to run them through. Place one under the other it makes a square board again and easily plain it.
