The production of two plates from elm wood on a lathe is shown.
These plates are made in two different ways, which differ in the sequence of processing of the outer and inner sides of the plates.
The diameter of the plates is 180 mm. The plates differ in depth: shallow and medium.

Due to the fact that the workpieces are not round, it was necessary to use a four-jaw chuck.
One plate is made in this sequence.
I secured the workpiece by the outer diameter in a 4-jaw chuck and partially processed the outer side of the plate on the machine. Partly because the cams prevent you from completely processing the outside.
Then he turned the workpiece over, secured it in the lathe chuck by the leg and processed the inner surface of the plate.
Then I finished the outer part of the plate along the outer diameter.
And I made the other plate using a different method (in a different sequence).
I secured the workpiece by the outer diameter and machined a technological sample from the inner side of the plate.
He turned the workpiece over and secured it to the opening in the lathe chuck to release it. This made it possible to completely process the entire outer side of the plate.
Then I secured the plate by the leg and processed the inner surface of the plate.
I liked the second method better.
In both methods, the plate leg was used for fastening. If the leg is not needed, then it can be ground off by securing the plate to the outer diameter.
It is shown how I make elm plates using these methods.
The oil that coats the plates is edible.
