To make a cable that converts an XLR male connector to a 3.5mm TRS (aux) connector for use with an iPhone, follow these steps:
Materials Needed:
- XLR male connector
- 3.5mm TRS plug (for aux input)
- Audio cable (balanced or unbalanced)
- Soldering iron and solder
- Wire strippers
- Heat shrink tubing or electrical tape
Instructions:
1. *Prepare the Cable:*
- Cut the audio cable to your desired length.
- Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from each end of the cable.
2. *Prepare the XLR Male Connector:*
- Open the XLR male connector.
- Solder the cable wires to the XLR connector:
- **Pin 1 (Ground)**: Connect to the ground wire of the cable.
- **Pin 2 (Hot/Positive)**: Connect to the positive (tip) wire of the cable.
- **Pin 3 (Cold/Negative)**: Connect to the negative (ring) wire of the cable.
3. *Prepare the 3.5mm TRS Plug:*
- Open the 3.5mm TRS plug.
- Solder the cable wires to the TRS plug:
- **Tip (Left Audio)**: Connect to the positive (tip) wire of the cable.
- **Ring (Right Audio)**: Connect to the negative (ring) wire of the cable (if you're only using one channel, connect it to the same wire as the tip).
- **Sleeve (Ground)**: Connect to the ground wire of the cable.
4. *Assemble the Connectors:*
- For the XLR plug: Secure the cable and reassemble the connector casing.
- For the 3.5mm TRS plug: Secure the cable and reassemble the connector casing.
5. *Test the Cable:*
- Plug the XLR end into the appropriate device and the 3.5mm end into the iPhone (using a 3.5mm to Lightning adapter if needed).
- Test to ensure proper audio transmission.
Note:
- Ensure that the cable is suitable for your application. For connecting to an iPhone, you may need a TRS to Lightning adapter if the iPhone doesn’t have a headphone jack.
- If you're working with balanced audio signals, ensure the devices you're connecting are compatible with balanced and unbalanced signals to avoid potential audio issues.
