One trick that worked really well (too well, in fact!) was having "the traitor" (possession victim, in my case) be one of the players. Players instinctively have an "Us (Good Guys) and Them (Potential Bad Guys)" to Players and NPCs, even if the characters haven't met before. You'd have to check the possessed player is OK with it first, as it's likely to get their character killed.

My players had to face "evil counterparts" of their former characters...got them pretty good.

Freak them out even more by making them face "good counterparts" of their current characters.

Thanks, Maddy. These were great. Covid put a damper on my in-person gaming but we do play on Fantasy Grounds with voice via Discord. These tips could be integrated into an online setting as well.

My favourite unsettle mode comes from an rpg I'm distendedly familiar with: *EXUVIAE*. At chargen, players state a character they've leverage over, and someone with leverage over them. Often the game will throw interruptions at players --- you'd think it'd be more unsettling when someone who's already got a bead on you turns up where you don't want them, but it's so much weirder when someone who you think you know and trust is suddenly also down in this restricted submarine, _despite the fact that they were the ones to drive you here_

Checking in and setting expectations and boundaries with your players is the most important thing. For example, I do NOT like jump scares, but I do love body horror.

I think music and sound are key to a good horror experience. but I don't know any way to make a good musical sting whenever I want it.

Or it's the perfect opportunity to convince your dnd purist players to finally try another system, maybe one that's designed for horror theme instead of trying to cram things into 5e For 1920s there is Call of Cthulhu, For Sci fi the popular Mothership, Nordic gaslight horror Vaesen from Free League, For nearly any setting the rules light Dread

I disagree on #5. Or at the very least: Physically splitting up the players by going into seperate rooms detailing encounters with an individual should be used VERY sparingly, and only for short scenes! Leave players alone with no clue what's going on for too long, and they start talking to one another off-game and OOC. The individual scene might be great for the single character that's been split from the group, but the others will have nothing to do and nothing to entertain themselves with - if the scene gets too long, they WILL get bored. and nothing kills a horror atmosphere faster than bored players talking OOC.
