Superior drummer on a roland kit. I have countless hours trying to get something that sounds dope in my room, i've had trigger since the OG, it helps, but it can't fix shitty overheads due to 7 foor ceilings. Getting a midi kit has made tracking drums so simple, less fun, but so much easier.

Honestly wish you would leave the background music or mix it in much quieter as it distracts from the main purpose of this video: the drum sounds. I can't focus on the sounds you're shaping when there's music playing. I get that it's meant to make it les boring, but there's really no need.

There's a lot of really cool tips in here, thanks for sharing! If I could offer a suggestion: when you are A/Bing your effects, it is helpful to just play the sounds back to back without cutting back to your talkback track. Just something I notice from a listener's perspective, it is much easier to hear the subtleties when they are right next to each other. Cheers!

Love this! It's such a good feeling to salvage less than ideal recordings for clients. I mixed a record from someone who recorded their drums in a garage with just a Sennheiser 421 and an SM58. Very mono and muffled sounding. I ran the tracks through UAD Neve 1073 with some eq for general tone shaping. Then used dynamic EQ and multi-band transient shaping with Izotope Neutron (also used Sculptor). I added a short ambience reverb before the bus compression to create a stereo image, then I used Devil-loc for parallel compression and distortion.

Agreed, the raw tracks really didn't sound that bad and would've come up pretty good with some EQ /Comp/dist, etc without the need for any samples. Don't get me wrong, samples can be cool but i think too many engineers/producers reach for samples way to quickly these dayz, don't be lazy, work with what you have first, then if really needed add samples...xox

I don't think the OG tracks get enough love here. Yes, the samples add some TLC, but the OG tracks provide the feel and baseline with which you can build all this awesome stuff on. Agree with parallel compression, distortion and reverb but I think the OG tracks deserve more than a 'meh' :)

Agree. The drums sound like they are added after. The kick is too sharp and loud against the rest of the song in the short snippet we heard. Would be nice to hear the original drums with the rest of the tracks. Sure the tweaked drums sound good but it would be interesting to hear a final mix to see if they blend well with rest of song.

Devil Loc Deluxe is unbelievable in parallel if we're going down the Soundtoys rabbit hole. Echoboy is also fantastic for tape delays on drums because of all the tweak features you can do. I've been using the EffectsRack recently to build custom chains within one plugin and that has been quite interesting. Worth looking into. All soundtoys plugs are absolute monsters which i'm sure you're well aware of clearly.

Easy to fix.. Call the drummer up and say sorry but we had to dump you off the session. Pick up the phone and call Omar Hakim. aOmar got a track I need to you lay some drums on I'll send you the files. Wait a day or so and get the files back and great playing and sound. Back in my recording engineer days we'd love it when we saw Ronnie Tutt's cartage service deliver his kit. Not only was Ronnie one of the most solid drummers, but his drums were always tuned to perfection and you put a couple mic's almost anywhere and get a great sound. Same went for Nigel Olsen live or studio his drums always sound fantastic. The producer I worked with a lot Keith Olsen could tune drums better than most drummers. It's all in the tuning.

@@AndrewMasters On my first attempt at recording drums I was faced with a very ringy snare, I tried tuning it out, changing skins etc. Eq-ing it would eat the snare's liveliness. Soothe2, targeted on the frequency, was the only thing that I have found to work transparently! I have since bought another snare and side-lined "demon snare". Another tool I have found invaluable for my needs is Wilkinson de-bleed: wilkinsonaudio.com/products/debleeder

Agreed. At least in this instance. Personally, i would think that a vid with raw drums, eq'ed and effected with no plug-ins, with details around what frequencies for each drum and how to leverage compression (you covered that a bit in this ivd) is optimal. I have been searching for that for some time, and noone has done it exceptionally well. There's a ton of speed metal guys that do it, but metal drums are some of the worst sounding drums ever, as they have to cut through so much just to be heard. but a good rock drum tone set (think "Slide it in" by Whitesnake, GRET natural drum sound) and how to get it....golden chalice, right there. Thanks for all you do.
@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters 2 жыл бұрын
@@daveycmusic8903 unfortunately compressed and eq’d poorly recorded or drums that just don’t sound good from the start - only results in compressed and eq’d bad sounding drums. The trick is no trick at all and has almost nothing to do with mixing. It’s make the drums sound exactly how you want them in the mix before you reach for a microphone. Then use the mic placement to capture the style of a recording you want. You’d be amazed at how little is necessary in the mix when you record great sounding drums, with a great player, properly. That’s 90% of the mix.

I have to say this was an awesome video and you did some absolutely epic shit to that drum recording. HOWEVER. Not to be rude or anything, but I feel like putting background music into a video focusing on music production is an absolutely terrible idea. I don't think anyone wants a BG track playing whenever you're just talking when we're trying to concentrate on the workflow and changes made to whatever it is you're constructing. Amazing video, but less of the BGM would be even more amazing. Stay awesome!

I’m a drummer and I love drums, but making drums sound good is the audio equivalent of using a green screen to achieve a visual scene. Without electronics acoustic drums sound like ass.
