Making your very first Super Mario Maker 2 stage is a daunting prospect. What parts should you use? How should you lay them out? How do you pace your level, and make a fair challenge? To help you clear this hurdle, here are ten steps you can follow to get your first level made, published, and open for feedback.
Leave your level codes in the comments below and I’ll play them next week on a livestream on KZfaq.

@Daniel Heidenreich I mean, as long as it can still be completed without doing it perfect your first try. Also as long as you don't have that stupid "pick a path" mechanic that might lead to death or a loop or the way forward. Of course, we're assuming everyone knows the warp door thing you just described. People who don't will think the level is impossible now. So, unless you have some kind of method of cluing in the player on that tidbit, I'd say that's subpar design. . . and not in a good way. Not even in a classic mario way. (and this is just a rant now, but everyone I know hates invisible block gimmicks. They're almost as bothersome as pick a path mechanics.)

@@IfOUGHTpIRANHAz I know of a board game designer who's mentioned that he keeps starting his mid-weight Euros designs with this really cool auction mechanic he's got designed. He's yet to actually use it in a game, by the time the game's ready to be published the mechanic's been cut from the game, but he really likes the mechanic and keeps using it as the scaffolding for his games early in the design process. Maybe it will survive the design process one day, or maybe it will keep being a starting point that weighs a game down by the time the game's mid way through the design process and keeps getting cut.

NV9-RSC-YYG "Goomba Latches" Puzzle & Themed I came up with a mechanic of using the seesaw gizmos as latches to block and unlock paths. Includes 3 main puzzles, 1 optional side puzzle, and an optional 8 coin scavenger hunt as a stretch goal. Pretty thoroughly playtested, and I definitely haven't seen anyone else use the seesaw like this, and I'm feeling pretty darn good about the results. Okay, now I need sleep. Hope you play it, but either way, keep up the good work.

I died more times than I’d like to admit to those moles popping out of the ground at just the right time. That said the level is really well done, I liked that the mushrooms were generous and the hard to reach fire flowers were a good incentive to explore. XN4-YF6-F6G "Bob-omb Backwoods" Description: Debris blocks your way through the forest. Use the Bob-ombs to escape! Instead of going for a standard straightforward level, this has an emphasis on exploration and a little bit of puzzle-solving with incrementing difficulty. I made the assumption that the player knows the basics of the Bob-omb mechanics so there's no tutorial in the beginning and instead you're thrown right into the action .

A checkpoint would have been nice on this one (maybe multiple checkpoints). I really like the puzzles, but getting sent all the way back to the beginning after pulling off that tricky second puzzle is a bit disheartening.
@billandfred7
@billandfred7 5 жыл бұрын
There's a checkpoint at the halfway point (after completing 3 of the puzzles) and one towards the end to help out anyone trying to figure out the secret exit. I could potentially move them to be a little sooner so you could save earlier. I totally agree though, having to restart a tricky puzzle isn't great. If there wasn't a limit on checkpoints, I'd put another one earlier to help out. Thanks for trying the level out though!

@@billandfred7 If the puzzles were in a different order, that might help. The fire + bomb part was much less dependent on randomness, whereas getting the bomb to jump off the note block juuuust right usually takes 4 or more attempts for a Mario schlub like me.
@billandfred7
@billandfred7 5 жыл бұрын
@@brianswift4659 I might have to make the noteblock jump more forgiving, or just make an easier way for the bomb to get on the snake blocks (like a claw.) The order of the puzzles has to stay the same for the level to work, so it'd have to be the puzzle that changes. There's a timing that consistently gets the bomb up there, but for a 2nd room it might be too much.

As a player and a maker, I can definitely corroborate the title. Twisters are surprisingly finicky to work with. :V That was a good level, though! Spoilers for the level below the cut. It did a few twists (ha) on the main mechanic and kept it interesting without overstaying its welcome, which is ideal. I really liked the variation with Goombas in the Twisters, where if you manage to bounce off their heads you're rewarded with a 50-Coin. That felt like an interesting and rewarding challenge. I will say the toughest part of the level was actually the two Twisters with bounces off Koopas in-between. With how erratic your movement is coming out of a Twister, a one-block landing is really hard to stick, especially when you also have to bounce off an enemy and keep moving.

I tend to make a ton of difficult platforming challenge levels at first, then I decided to make nice and easy levels. This video definitely helps me while I’m making my next level. My first 3 I’ve made are just so difficult that they’re fun to me, yet my brother can’t even play them. I realize the difficulty is too much to some, and I think the saturation of Mario Maker 2 KZfaqrs being amazing makes me want to make super difficult levels, but that’s not how most of the players are. Great video dude. Thanks for your advice

I like to have personality on my levels. Instead of focusing on a gimmick I focus on the atmosphere. I make environments and block formations that look unique and cool. Then make the level flow as well as I can while ramping up the challenge slowly. I try to find enemies that work well with the environment I am using, and I also make sure the level does not just move linearly. The level will usually have highs and lows, with a path kinda like an open labyrinth. Tight spots that contrast well with more open areas, different heights of floors and ceilings, maybe some ruin-like structures and stairways intertwining with mountains and forest. Then at the end I do a lot of playtesting to make sure that everything works together, and there is a good opening and ending. With style like this I feel like the levels I make feel less generic, as I make places that feel alive and fun to explore, rather than just having simple obstacle courses.

Really cool level. My only concern is about the inaccuracy of the ground pounds. Might be due to the Switch D Pad not being great, but near misses or misreading my input is causing me a headache. Don't get me wrong though, love the level! Would it be possible to place 2 on/off blocks next to each other though in order to broaden the area that requires you to hit the switch? That would alleviate the d-pad issue imo Edit: just switched over to my 8bitdo SFC30Pro and it alleviated the issue. I'm putting it down to the switch controller and not your level design :)

Great video! That's very similar to my process as a game/level designer. I'd say depending on the game you're working on, there's an extra step near the beginning that is determining how you'll approach the narrative/geographical context for that level. In this video, you started with a horizontal "field" level as it is SMM2's default layout and theme. But sometimes there are narrative requirements that will make you have to think of the general layout of the level beforehands. For example, if in that part of the story the character is infiltrating a castle, you might want to determine that the level will start at the moats and finish on top of the tower, so you'll have to include vertical segments to give an idea of ascension. Sometimes you have to fit that level into a bigger world layout to make the world coherent; is the protagonist heading East? West? North? Are there connections to other levels above or below? What kind of environments are they going through? It's very important to have this thought of before working on the "micro" parts of the level.
