The whole side of the mold is a reservoir. I pour lead in there a couple times each side to get it hot. Lead is most dangerous when it's shiny. In a few days it will turn grey from oxidation and is less toxic to the touch

I use a blow torch. Make a pile then go back through and get the pour lead broke off. No need to cut just snap the end off by twisting it. I just made a 100lbs of weights in two days. You can get a system down and make them way faster. Load that mold up. I use a blow torch to heat the mold up. The hotter the mold is the better your weight/jigs will look.

I’ve been pouring jigs for 30 years. Your right to pour lead to preheat your mold. On some of the bigger jig molds I leave the mold closed for a couple of minutes to really heat them up. Get a candle and smoke the mold if your jigs get hard to remove.

The major advantage on making your jigs is you can match hook size and weight on your own terms. Sometimes in the river when there's current you need an extra weight but not a giant hook. You just gave yourself a whole new world of possibilities as if fishing was low on variables and combinations 😅 Love that oven and pouring-to molds, so relaxing asrm watching you do those jigs 🥰

Ways to heat your mold include resting it on a griddle while your doing your initial melt and while resting between each usage. Another option is using your heat gun on the inside surface until you get your first few runs going. Addicting to watch. Been making my own jigs with pre-made heads, this makes me reconsider doing them all from scratch. Cool stuff, man!!

Debo, I've been casting bullets for 30 years. That mold looks like aluminum. If so you can dip the corner into the lead, and you can put the mold on the furnace while the lead is melting. Be sure to fill the mold because the lead shrinks as it cools. Pure lead shrinks more.

set your mold on top of the pot to help heat up the mold prior to pouring. Also you can "candle" the mold prior to pouring. This will soot up the mold for easy release of the jigs when extracting from the mold. Great video as usual.

I know I’m like a year late… but if you ever get a mispour you can hold the hook with a pair of pliers and dip the misshaped head in the pot to melt it off the hook. Also, you can get a ton of lead from roofing contractors if you know any. My family‘s been in roofing for 50 years so every time I repair a chimney the scrap lead that is clean turns into jigs.

Good stuff bro. I heat my molds up with the same heat gun(like a blow dryer or torch) I use to heat the jigs up for paint. You can also sit the molds on top of the lead pot while the lead is heating up the mold will warm up with it also. Two tips: 1 don’t ever drop lead in the pot if you have a chunk or something cuz it will splash back and I’m sure you know that 2 is important. Don’t ever throw hot lead on a wet surface. Best example is I do my molds at my grave door and the driveway was wet from the rain and I threw a small junk off my spoon cleaning the top of the lead pot and when it hit the wet surface it like exploded everywhere. Hot lead and water don’t mix.

Reloaders typically place the mold on top of the melting pot to heat them up. Also, Smoking the mold helps them fill more evenly, as well as improving the release. just hold the mold over a candle and carbon soot will cover the molds. This only needs to be done once before each mold making session.
