Hey guys! Today I finally made my own laundry detergent! This was actually pretty cool to do and it smells amazing! This recipe makes a ton of laundry soap (504 loads apparently). You only need 2 tablespoons per load making each load around .04 cents! Crazy right!? Anyways with these claims it will probably last a year for us. =) We will see about that lol Thank you for watching!
***UPDATE***After using the homemade recipe it does seem like it does a ok job. Now the amount of actual soap in this recipe to me it’s not going to replace what actual detergent does for actually getting a deep clean. I am going to use a combination of this and my regular detergent. I am not going to use as much of my regular detergent since I will be using this also. This was a cool experiment to try for sure!

I grated my fels naptha with a nutri bullet. Just shake some powder in first so the soap doesn’t stick to the blade and sides. It grates the scent boosters too. Super satisfying.

Instead of grading the soap , next time buy Zote Flakes. It is found in the baby section of you Walmart. It’s for washing baby clothes. One box will do!

I would microwave the soap for a bit and it would make it flakey and super soft easy to flake!!

I do this recipe often and if you put the Zote in the microwave for intervals of 30-60 it'll bubble up and just crumbles in your fingers. Just don't leave it in for too long before stopping intervals or it'll burn. It's sooo much easier and faster that grating it!!

I used a similar recipe and it really does clean amazingly well! I also use wool dryer balls for extra softness and static control. Your clothes feel like a well-worn tee shirt! However...it is expensive and time consuming to make. I think it works better, but you have to balance all the factors. I do not have a HE washer so I use a little less than a 1/4c. (1/6c.??) and I didn’t feel like it lasted any longer than what I would buy. My husband and daughter suffer from eczema and this recipe (minus the Downy) did wonders for their skin.

Great video! Tip to make the soap grating easier - heat it to about 50 degrees C in the oven first. So much easier to grate warm soap. 🙂

I had my zote bars for over a year when I finally got around to making this detergent. Grating was a breeze and it was a nice fine powder so easy to mix with everything. I just purchased another bar to see how long it actually takes to dry out.

You don't need to hand grate all that soap. Just cut it into chunks and toss in a blender with some of the powders and let the machine grind it up.

I don’t really remember. The scent kept good but I didn’t really like the recipe too much that I tried. When I ran out I did not make it again

@@theyorks I basically use the same recipe and love it, but to me, 2T is a joke. I use 1/4 cup for small loads and adjust accordingly if the load is larger. What didn't you like about it???

washing soda is sodium carbonate and baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, mixing them together just makes a product in between (weaker) you should heat the sodium bicarbonate up first to make sodium carbonate and then add that in, because it's ~ 1000 times better than sodium bicarbonate. So basically all you did by mixing them was reduce it's strength

@@marcellaschechter7411 Well in this hot ass weather you can probably make a solar oven. But typically spreading it out on a cookie sheet putting in the oven you'll see it bubble (realeasing the co2) and eventually stop, which means it's done. Can also do in a pan on the stove. Tons of youtube videos showing this... you only need low heat like 120C / 250F or so

If you hunt drop 1 bar of Fels-Naptha soap bars. You can clean your hunting clothes w/out scent.Scented laundry detergent grade in 1 bar of Olay or Dove Soap

If you continue to use the fels naphtha get a food processor that will be just for soap making, it’s saves soooo much time…. And your hands wonts hurt 😉 I cut mine in small cubes and throw it in my food processor

Great video, I would be exactly like you doing this for the first time I always forget something and have to leave off to fetch.😄 My heart flipped when you picked up the whole box with the powder in, I was waiting for the jar to tip over and the powder end up on the counter top I know that would happen to me I’d have to use a scoop to transfer it, well done 👍👍😉

I still have half of the container left after the whole batch. I didn’t like how it worked on it’s own. I always used the two tablespoons with a TINY amount of liquid detergent. Overall it has saved us money because we are not using nearly as much of the regular detergent. I will not be doing another batch. Not my preference 🤷🏻‍♀️

When I put in oxy clean in my 5 gallons of laundry soap, it foamed up and leaked out of the top of container.... Be careful when mixing with laundry detergent. This is for liquid version only!!!

Try it in liquid form, you can make 5 gallon buckets out of wayyyyy less of each of those things, 1 fels naptha bar with 4 cups of water and boil it till its all incorporated (stir it a little) mix up 2 cups borax and 2 cups super washing soda, drop the fels naptha and the dry ingredients into the bucket, fill it about halfway with hot water, mix it with a mixing paddle that attaches to a drill, fill the bucket not all the way to the top leave a little room to add 1 more thing and the ability to mix again, let it sit for 2 days, add 64ish load of laundry soap of your choice and mix again now you've created 5 gallons of super awesome laundry detergent, BTW get a hot plate from Walmart or something and this outside, it's pretty strong smelling stuff, not bad smelling, just strong lol

Honestly I don’t like it on its own. Mainly because it doesn’t have enough soap in my opinion. I use 2 tablespoons of this and very little liquid detergent and it works great! I still have a ton left and it has made my liquid detergent last so much longer!

You can also use more bars of Fels Naptha. I use at least 2 bars for EACH BOX of product, and I double/triple the amount you made in the video. If you add more Fels Naptha, you will see a difference.

the only different thing I do is put the scent beads in the blender with a little baking soda to make it into a powder as well. I also do that with the grated soap so that everything is nice and powdery.

I put everything in a garbage plastic bag and mix everything then put it in a container. Ps. I stopped adding the Downey dots cause it messes up washer after awhile.

And if you want spend less you only need the soap(zote bars are cheaper than feels naptha), borax, and washing soda. And if you have baking soda already, you can make it into washing soda by baking it

I haven’t noticed it messing it up. I have been using it in combination with liquid soap as I didn’t find it strong enough on its own. That’s probably because I didn’t add enough actual soap. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Use a 30 gallon trash bag for dumping and mixing detergent! No arm workout necessary! Just dump and tie tightly and roll the bag around on your counter top or floor. Next time please wear a dust mask. I hate seeing you inhale all of the cleaning detergent particles☹️

I’m no expert waiting for my ingredients to arrive to make my first batch. Here in the UK we don’t find at least 3 of the ingredients in shops so have to use eBay and Amazon. I just wanted to pass on what I’ve learned by watching many of these videos, it isn’t meant to sud up a lot as it’s better for your clothes. The rinsing gets them all out making you clothes cleaner and your washer less build up. Hope that helps. 👍😊

I've been using this soap for years. If you have kids, use as a booster (1tbs) per load plus your regular detergent. If you use Tide, you can use half the amount plus the 1 or 2TBS of the homemade. Kid's dirt needs enzymes and Tide has the enzymes (as does the Kirkland detergent). I use a food processor to grate the soap, done in mere minutes.

I'll do the math for ya, there is no way it costs $69.95, I've compounded this recipe more than 5 times already, ok here goes: (One box of Borax)= 4.99 Super washing soda= 4.99 Oxy Clean container= 6.99 Arm and Hammer box= 3.99 Scent booster= 3.99 Fells naptha or zote 🧼 3 bars 3.15 Do the math cause I already did $28.10 cents woman, stop being lazy and go to the grocery store and buy it the hell with Amazon 🤣

Tip 1: Use blender to chop up soap (cut into cubes first) Tip 2: Use a trash bag to mix it. Just pour all ingredients into bag tie it up, & mix. Double bag so you can tumble it on the counter. Easy to pour into glass container. Store the extra in the bag, in a plastic container with lid. Not a tip: I had the same scooper and the first time I washed it with dishes the black lettering/measurements come right off. Lol

I made mine with the snuggle pods instead of using the crystal booster sent I just cut them open and add it...To me the smell of the sent crystals wash out in the washer so I tried the snuggle sent booster pods and I like it...The sent doesn't completely wash out...

You got all the ingredients right except your only supposed to use half a box of arm and hammer not the whole box, the first batch you make will be the most expensive yes it super cheap for only $30 bucks but the half a box of arm and Hammer equals another batch and $3.99 less on your next batch making your next back only $26 dollars, also it's a compound recipe sweetie never use too much baking soda it's acidic it could eat your clothes away if you use too much it has the same effect on toothpaste and remember what happens when you mix vinegar and baking soda acid, next time only use half a box of baking soda unless you want your skin all dried out trust me I still make this recipe every 6 months it works my brother asks me to make it for him and his mom all the time, and on the plus side, you can clean the bathroom with it , and you can shampoo the carpets with it 🥰

Earlier, I forgot to mention that I don't use the Oxiclean and Baking Soda in my recipe. I occasionally add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of baking soda to a load for water softener and strong odor removal. Overall, the whole boxes of Borax and Washing Soda mixed with the Fels Naptha and scent booster get the job done. Have been using it for years!!

I don’t mean to scare you or be rude, but I just want to point out that excessive Borax (or to the boron in Borax) exposure can hurt fertility and/or hurt fetuses in pregnant women. Borax has a warning of just that on its packaging in the European Union. Children are particularly vulnerable to it, because they are so small. It isn’t acutely dangerous, obviously, but boric acid develops naturally, so we are exposed to it through food, water and other sources, so it’s just recommended (where I live, at least) to limit artificial exposure to it as much as possible, because it all adds up. If you can leave it out of your detergent, or find a safer replacement, would maybe be a good idea. ☺️

You can buy name brand powdered laundry detergent for what you’d spend making this and save yourself the labor. Lol The whole idea is to SAVE MONEY by making your own, but to each her own. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The oxi clean and lavender downy beads are unnecessary. Instead use lavender essential oil drops and boil all of this with a few gallons of hot water. Approximately 5 gallons can be made. That reduces the cost by about 18 dollars.

A mask and gloves are definitely needed for this. Breathing in those chemicals and touching them is not what the doctor recommended.

If you like seeing the suds, do not add the scent beads. Add the beads to the raise cycle.

Cut the soap up with a knife, put in a blender!! I wouldn't use scent, I wouldn't use A LOT of Borax. That stuff is harsh. You should have some basic understanding of water, ph, and chemicals before you throw all this together ❤️

That's NOT detergent. You made SOAP. Detergent and soap are two different things and act extremely different!!

@@kushpaladin No, it isn't. You're perpetrating the ignorance that leads to your clothes NOT getting clean. For crying out loud, now I'm the one who has to educate you ignorance! Like I said, soap and detergent are 2 DIFFERENT things. It's like saying a flour tortilla and a loaf of bread are "basically the same ." Yes, they are both made with flour and you can eat them, but as we all know, they are, vastly, different. SOAP does not remove dirt or grime on it's own, you have to rigorously rub and/or scrub with soap & water to remove said dirt or grime. When washing your hands, you use soap because the manufactures know you will be RUBBING your hands together. Back in the day people would use soap to wash their clothes in conjunction with a wash tub and a washboard. The person would rub and scrub the clothes, vigorously, up on down on the washboard ,repeatedly, to remove dirt and grime from the clothes. DETERGENT, however, works very differently, as it does not require rubbing and/or scrubbing. For example, if you put dish washing detergent in a greasy lasagna pan to sit, the detergent lifts and removes the grease WITHOUT you having to scrub; perhaps you've seen the TV commercial that depicts the aforementioned. Todays modern washing machines do NOT rub or scrub your clothes together, they are, merely, swished back-n-forth in a circular motion. Therefore, because there is NO scrubbing, soap can not be used, detergent (with it's lifting power) is used. Also, if you use soap in a washing machine, because there's no rubbing and scrubbing to get the soap out, the soap stays in your clothes and a soap build-up will form. Soap build-up leads to your towels not absorbing water very well and your clothes will take on a dingy appearance. Not to mention, your clothes aren't getting clean, because the soap, actually traps the dirt and grime in your clothes.

@@erswain1washing machines have an agitator that replace the manual scrubbing work that people used to do.
