In this video you will learn how to make your own paint in four easy steps.
You need:
• A morter (or a hard rock)
• A piece of an old brick or charcoal
• Linseed oil
• Palette knife
• Glass of water
Step 1: Grind the brick (or charcoal) into pigment
Step 2: Pour the pigment in a jar of water to filter out levigation
Step 3: Decant the lighter pigment and let it dry
Step 4: Grind linseed oil into the charcoal pigment with palette knife
This video will also give you advice on which other raw materials you can use to make paints, including animal fat as a substitute for linseed oil.
Demonstration by Alastair Blain who was accompanied by Jan-Ove Tuv.

Ive mined various minerals as a rock hound and thought about making paints before, but i just realized, one could just mine old paint and grind it up, there's s bunch of it everywhere. Also one time i went to a place in California that was like work spaces and i got some paint chips that were from a paint booth, hundreds of layers of different color paint. They call it fordite, and some of it is sought by wood turners because it can be used to make pens and it looks really cool.

Oil paint often had lead in it and airborne dust or ingestion would be very toxic so id be careful lol

Ive been dabbling with natural earth pigments very similar to this fellow. A great binder to use is egg yolk. Great Video.

Great to see your process:-) even though I use a lot of bright and even fluorescent colours in my art I'm also fascinated with earth colours. And I always loved natural colours of your art! Yesterday as I wantched aother video about earth pigments I suddenly remembered how I was drawing in childhood right on the bricks of my grandmother's house! The bricks of the house were white and I drew a piece on each one with pieces of coal and sometimes small pieces of various colours of burnt red bricks which were scattered all around the house:-) I was finding subtle differences of these colours and texture and consistency .. I was finding ways to create art in any circumstances from anything around me .. And as I watch this video it popped up in my memory even brighter:-)

You can stabilize hand made oil paint, with the addition of a small amount of amber varnish, provided the resin content is at a sufficient level. It is actually quite amazing, what that substance will do for paint.

Porque dices contenido de resina
@jimcortez3293

The resin to oil ratio has to be at a certain percentage, in order to stabilize the paint. If there is too much amber fused into the oil, it will create problems, and too little, another set of problems. @@osmerestelamunoz7644

It's dark pigment. Manganese (oxide/dioxide) is also used as dark pigments. There are for instance examples of this in cave art (Lascaux)

One needs to reside in a cabin or hut somewhere outside the cities apartments to do something like that, otherwise one would be disturbing the neighbors. It's good to know, don't get me wrong. I actually would love to make my own paint 🙂. Thanks for sharing.

You can just take a brick and charcoal to the woods somewhere and crush it up. You can do this in an apartment though if you do it right, maybe go somewhere else to smash up the brick and charcoal... but after that it's not too much noise. Lol that's why cities need work spaces that can be used for things like this, that way people are aware they can do things instead of saying oh I don't have a house I don't have a yard etc...we should encourage people to do creative stuff because that's pretty much where all the good things in life came from, they usually come from people doing things not thinking things.

So basically the same process as making charcoal/carbon pencil leads except the "lead" has more water to dissolve it into a paste

⛳️Why did he say “Oil paint is dangerous and plastic is healthy.” Can anyone clarify this plz. 🙏🏻
@JohnSmith-wj4fo
@JohnSmith-wj4fo 11 ай бұрын
I think he got this wrong...tre's naive. Industrial turpentine is toxic. Linseed is not toxic. Plastic paints have VOC's, are toxic.
@jimcortez3293

Oil paint can be exceptionally dangerous. Vermilion is very toxic, as are cadmiums, and many others, such as flake white etc. The thing is, if you don't put it on crackers, and eat it, or brush your teeth with it, things are generally better. Even non toxic pigments such as yellow ochre, can pose a problem when sanded for example, as they often contain crystalline silica. He is right in his asertion that he needs to be wearing a mask, when working with dry pigments.
@josephpotter5766

A lot of oil paint pigments are extremely toxic, things like mercury and cadmium and lead, a lot of bioaccumulative heavy metals. Whereas bulk plastics are actualyl very biologically inactive, what makes plastics unhealthy is when it's in fine micro-particles. You can lick a block of PVC all day and not suffer any ill effects, try that with a chunk of realgar and you'll straight up die.

he was being sarcastic. because acrylics (which is basically plastic) are often seen as more safe than oil paints due to the solvents in commercially available oil paints. :) I still think that even with fresh paint consisting only out of oil and non-toxic pigment, when working with certain pigments it's safer to work in a well-ventilated space and with a mask if you work with powdered pigments because breathing them in can be not very healthy (there's a reason why so many bakers get problems with their lungs...it's not healthy to breath in so many small particles).
