Have you encountered the Hold System working with a studio or agency? 🤔
@randmcnally.
@randmcnally. Жыл бұрын
if I am booking an artist and they tell me: "you're my 2nd hold" - I usually consider them not available and move on. as the studio I am looking to secure talent for a job and a 2nd hold doesn't do that for me. so I'd be careful with that technique if you're starting out. usually an artist will just say: I am holding on something else can you challenge? the whole 2nd hold shouldn't even exist, everything thing should be a hold of the same value and it's a race to secure the booking. I ask people to give me first right of refusal all the time, but really, it's pretty meaningless. I also try not to hold anyone - just book. the carrot dangle is the worst part of the studio/freelance model.

Yes it's definately tricky when it comes to 2nd holds and I would usually say can you confirm and I'll challenge my 1st hold to see if I can make myself available for you. If neither of them want to confirm I think that's where 2nd hold comes into play. As you said the ideal outcome for everyone is a confirmed booking. And I would agree that giving yourself the first hold can be risky too. Thanks for providing your insight on the subject too :)

Wish I had this video when I was just starting out! Very good explanation of holds and hold etiquette. An irritating practice I've dealt with before is big studios placing "blanket holds" for big chunks of time "just in case" a project comes along. The 2nd hold trick is a good way of dealing with that. Ultimately it's an imperfect honor system.

Advice: write down your holds (even if you are yourself the 1st hold) in a calendar, mentioning the name of the client. So that when you're talking with 3 clients at a time, there's no confusion.

@@MotionHatch right now it's really just the learning curve I do content editing right now so motion design is something I always knew about it but now I am taking it seriously so learning a lot and watching a lot of creators like you to understand the industry !

@@kinzo1192 This is so great to hear! Have you done any graphic design also? It's great to see you taking the time to learn about the business processes though too, a lot of people forget that they're running a business! Please reach out if you have any questions!

Why does this system exist in the first place? Either book or don't book! They don't use it where I work (Finland) and if I ever come across this trick I'd probably say that I don't do the hold system - I'm available to book if you want.

It's really beneficial for agencies/studios to ensure they have a safety net for the problems we all experience as freelancers... But, like we say, there can be advantages for designers to use this system (when done correctly)! We wanted to give people new to freelancing (or not new to it too) a heads up that they're likely to experience this at some point so make sure it works in your favour :)

Great content! Neatly explained. Would say 24 hours sometimes isn’t available to let someone confirm when things are really busy.

Thanks Deeman! Yeah I would say it's more of a "are you able to let me know by tomorrow if possible so I can get back to my other client" type wording.

I have a 2nd hold right now that extends for 3 months. Should I let my 2nd hold know when I get booked by my "1st" hold client or is that not necessary? Great content : )

Yeah I would let them know so they can organise working with someone else if they need too.

Superb ⭐ Only you can help me in a perfect way - Could you tell how to beat & outsmart the competition in the field of freelancing or online entrepreneurship in an effective way to establish ourselves, become trustworthy completely in the market ? I m witnessing a lot of competition & clients normally going for projects with people whom they have previously worked with so how to break that chain & prove ourself ? there any good books on this subject to get some exact details..How to convince/get potential clients by using linked in to trust us with a portfolio as beginner & work with us for projects where many experienced people are available in abundance to get those deals ? How to set us apart from that crowd or make the competition irrelevant..
@MotionHatch
@MotionHatch Жыл бұрын
Hi Mohib, Thanks for your comment and kind words. Instead of focusing on how to beat the competition I would focus on how you can grow your network. If you think of the competition as partners you can start to build relationships with others in your industry which can lead to referrals. I would start by seeing who is posting about your industry/topic on LinkedIn and post helpful and well-thought through comments underneath. After a while you can reach out to them directly and ask if they fancy a quick chat about freelancing. Come into this conversation with an idea of how you might help them. It seems counter intuitive but building relationships with peers is usually fastest way to get referred to clients. Hope that helps?

The system is not okay. You either book or don't. If there is a problem then the studio needs to train clients to organize and plan better. This should not happen, nor ever be encouraged.
