Making clean lines when painting on canvas is hard. Making clean lines that are curved is even harder. In this episode of Mixed Media Masters, mixed media artist Spider Graham walks you through a fool-proof method of getting perfectly masked curved lines every time you need them. If you’ve struggled with this in the past, you may be pleasantly surprised at just how easy it is!
Check out Spider's gallery at www.spectivastudios.com!

Thin blue striping tape is sold at automotive paint suppliers so you don't need to slice wider tape.

Good stuff! That liquid medium seal for the masking tape is a brilliant idea. Some other teachers recommend removing the mask before the paint has dried. Do you do that?

Do you have experience of using this tape for making outlines of shapes or patterns you have already done ?

Just use gesso, no need for a fancy acrylic product

Thanks for the tip! Keeping it simple with gesso sounds like a great idea.

Gesso would work in this instance but not if you’re going over other colors.

Useful tip. Sometimes I get bleed-through under the tape; I'll cut out paper shapes from bristol board if I have to! Love your shirt, BTW! I want one.
@mixedmediamasters
@mixedmediamasters 28 күн бұрын
Yeah, bleed through is always a risk. I try to always paint away from the tape to minimize the possibility of bleeding. Its fun to collect 'arty' shirts and I'm grateful I get to wear them in the videos!

I do the opposite, I thicken the acrylic with heavy structure gel then it doesn’t seep under the masking tape and you get a lovely crisp line. I’ll have to give this method a try.

Wondering why you didn’t leave the original tape and repeat on the other side
@garyhooper1609
@garyhooper1609 7 ай бұрын
There would’ve been a white line left as thick as the tape. The two colors would go as far as the border of the tape and then stop. When you remove the tape, you’d be left with a blue stripe. Granted, you could paint the entire surface one of your colors, and then only do the tape curve one time, but that would be layering colors and might not be what you want.

From the start it look perfect, the taping is perfect but the step by step of your pairing is wrong. Why glueing the with white? First the you should is painting the blue first and when want to paint the black you glue your with the same blue leave it dry and paint the black, just like that you have a perfect line. (Next don’t paint dark colour before bright colour)
