In 2022 I already had an AMEX Blue Cash Preferred and was approved for a CSR and an Apple Card, both with significantly higher limits than the AMEX, and both within about a month of each other. A few days after the second approval, AMEX automatically increased my limit to match the two other cards.

Great points here Spencer! I’ve always found it easiest to request a CLI every time I had an income increase, but ultimately if I were to do it over again, I probably would have just applied for cards to increase my limit instead, while getting a sign up bonus as well!

Chase no longer doing a hard pull is a big change, and even if online, your card says "not eligible", you can call anyhow. That being said, don't abuse it!

I want to point out that automatic credit limit increases are not necessarily related to being responsible with your cards. Before I started educating myself about the credit card game I was not very responsible with my credit. This was like 5-6 years ago. I always paid on time but I just paid the minimum in two credit cards (CU was at around 80% on both). I still received credit limit increases on a yearly basis of $2-3k on each card (for some reason).

You were still paying on time, so the credit card company loved that you were carrying a balance and wanted you to carry more! I received an automatic increase on one because I took advantage of a 0% interest offer, so I switched all my purchases to it and the balance crept up towards the limit, then they automatically increased it. This card actually used to be my primary card nearly 20 years ago, but I rarely used it the past 10-15 years so they dropped the limit in half. So I was curious to see if using it a lot would get an automatic increase.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial

Thanks for the DP! I mostly agree with the second comment left below. They probably saw that you had a propensity to pay your cards on time, but were paying them interest which they wanted to encourage by giving you more credit. They can be predatory that way!

This is true every time I got close to my credit limit Both BOA and Capital one would increase my limit automatically 😂 as long as you pay your minimum payment and use the card they’ll increase it!

Great video Spencer. I have gone the route of asking for a CLI and getting a new card to increase my available credit. One of the best benefits is that utilization. I too keep my cards utilization low...usually below 3% but the more total credit available the better.

I always like the point of applying for a new card for a higher limit + better benefits vs just asking for a higher limit alone. And the propensity of debt, is tantamount. Do you see a lot of cases from others for a counter when requesting a credit limit increase? Great breakdown Spencer, very comprehensive!

Amex is the easiest to get a credit increase and I have my highest limits with them. Capital one sucks with increase, I've been trying for 1yr and they keep denying me!! ( I have excellent credit & income ). Citi gave me a hard pull on my Transition which I wasn't expecting.. Great vid as always Spencer 💥
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial

Thanks for watching as always! Amex is definitely pretty easy. I found Citi to be very straightforward too but most of the time they should be soft pulls... sometimes the fine print will get you though if you don't look closely. Capital One is definitely one of the worst with their bucketing system though. Hopefully you'll get that CLI one day!

Hey Spencer! In my experience, I’ve received 3 automatic, soft-pull credit limit increases for my AMEX Delta card (which has an AF). At this point, it feels like too much since I’ve never spent over $10k, even $20k, for things in a short amount of time, so I deliberately decided not to update my income after getting a new job with a higher income 😅 (not the smartest decision now but to my next point…) On the other hand, I have the Wells Fargo Autograph card (no AF and a Visa Signature card) where my credit limit has stayed at $1,500, and I have not received an automatic CLI after holding it for a little less than a year. I’m considering asking for one since there aren’t many cards without an AF and foreign transaction fees that look appealing. Fingers crossed if I decide to go through asking for a CLI🤞🏼

What a timely video. This information is super useful to me as I just asked Chase for a credit limit increase. I forgot how picky they are about how much credit line they’ll give you based on your income, so I kinda regret asking. I only asked for 3k more, but I do want to add at LEAST 3 more Chase cards to my arsenal so I should have just been patient. Oh well. Silver lining is they’re amazing at working with moving credit lines around, so I could just do that if all else fails. I’d be happy if I got the credit limit increase but I would be equally as happy if they declined it, or only did a partial increase, as I’d like to just open more cards in the future with Chase. The goodest boy, hi Odin!

What's your honest opinion about request a credit limit decrease on your first card that you don't use it anymore? For instance, I have the Bofa Custom Cash for 11 years as my oldest card and currently have 10k credit limit on that card, instead of canceling the card I thought about request a credit limit decrease from 10k to $500 and add Amazon reload $1 per month to keep my account alive. Also, apply for more credit cards in the future.
@rodhoutx
@rodhoutx Жыл бұрын
I don't think there's a reason to ask for a decrease. You want that available credit limit to help your total utilization calculation (by having a more unused credit). With that said, they may automatically lower it due to little or no use (my oldest card did that because I rarely used it anymore). They will usually send you a letter before they cancel one, giving you a chance/reminder to use it. So I make that annual charge and put it back in the drawer. Some cards have started to really entice you with some nice offers to get you to use them again such as 0% interest charges for 6-months, better balance transfer offers, etc. So you would still want the limit if they sent you an enticing offer.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Жыл бұрын
I've personally never asked for a decrease and likely wouldn't do so unless a lender started denying me for having too much credit open. You could always apply for another card with that bank and move some of that old CL to your new card, but that's a situational thing.

I’m in favor of just applying for a whole new card rather than requesting a line limit. But honestly at this point, I don’t even need more credit.😭 All my bills per month are still less than 1% of my total limits so if I get more, sweet but I don’t actively request limits anymore. Add my wife’s limits onto that, and we just apply for new cards, don’t really worry about limits anymore - it’s freeing.😂
