hey Rob, just want to thank you for an informative and very clear guide on how to master! As a beginner having sifted through several tutorial videos that were predominantly focused on more technical jargon, it was refreshing and encouraging to have the process broken down into simple basics which made it all the less daunting! keep doing what you're doing!

wonderful. chat about the approach was incredibly useful and thought provoking. May have said this before but I've learnt more about getting the right sound in the 2 hours of your videos I've watched than my whole degree in Music Tech in 2008

Thanks for the channel, it is simply one of the best. Usually I compose instrumental songs. I work with film tracks and use virtual instruments. Which is better for mixing, turning midis into wav and then mixing or whatever?

Thanks for this video. One question. Why Channel EQ instead of Linear EQ for mastering? Isn’t Linear EQ more accurate and higher quality and better suited for mastering?

I'm a new subscriber and just want to thank you for all your very helpful videos. I've been mixing for over 15 years as a broke-ass musician and I've always been 5 steps away from being a decent engineer. Having been going through your catalogue of videos over the past week I feel like a lot of things just clicked for me. Things that I'd been very close to getting right I am now getting spot on because of this channel. Regarding a comment made in this video; you say that when you complete a mix you should wait a fair few days before coming back to master it - something that I have always done. However, do you find that when you do this you have an edge to go back to the mix and continue making edits? I find that, no matter how happy I am with a mix one day, a week later I will want to add/remove things. It really prevents me from getting to the mastering stage. It's not that I'm looking for perfection because I know that's not something that I'll achieve in my spare bedroom. I'm just curious if you have any words of wisdom to help me with this? Thanks again! - Lowrie

Might be a dumb question but, when you export a mix in Logic, prior to mastering, what type of file should you export it as?
@masteringcom
@masteringcom 5 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question! Usually best to export a WAV or AIF file depending on what you (or your mastering engineer) prefer. The most important thing is that those file formats are both lossless file formats.

Can you explain mastering for streaming? Like the -14 LUFS rule. That would be very helpful because my tracks are still not loud enough on Spotify. Thank you for this video btw
@compoundaudio
@compoundaudio 5 жыл бұрын
you can have your tracks at -8lufs if u like, but anything submitted over -14lufs then you must set the master output or ceiling to -2dBTP

Interesting. So when you master you bounce the mix down first.

Why do you export your mix before mastering? In GB I can add a master track and do all the mastering right there and export when its done. I assume the thinking is once its mixed its mixed and you should'nt change anything

I really like your videos but I think it's disingenuous and misleading to present mastering as a series of technical steps you can achieve when it's as much about having a neutral and experienced set of ears in ideal listening conditions taking a final objective look at your music.

MY HOLLY GOD ....I was doing some work in the kitchen with my Bluetooth headphones on ...this song is sooooooo annoying...not only it's a copy of all that endless commercial stuff you hear everywhere ...but its a really bad song ....I just had an anxiety attack after 10 minutes...my hands were full so I could reach for my phone to turn it off, so I took the abuse for a little longer. The engineer of this song probably was grinding his teeth to get through the sessions.
