Using an incorrectly sized belt can cause damage to the belt, the machine or the work piece, or just slip rather than rotate on the machine. And of course, this will have a negative impact on your sanding process and result.
In today’s video we will look at a couple of the most common ways to measure a belt if you don’t have the manufacturer’s specifications, and what we consider to be the best way.
These techniques will work for just about any machine that would require the use of an abrasive belt, from a small file belt sander to a large wide belt machine.
You can get an accurate WIDTH measurement just by measuring from one side of the belt to the other. But obtaining the proper LENGTH measurement can be difficult if it’s not done correctly.
Measuring Methods:
00:42 Measuring the circumference
01:17 Fold the belt in half and pinch the ends
02:02 Cut belt in half and lay flat to measure
02:37 Wrap a string around the circumference and mark it
