RHR should always be taken at complete rest. Being in a chair talking to you doctor is not RHR. A cardiologist will ask you to lie down for a few minutes, close your eyes and relax before measuring. And preferably, they will give you a chest strap to measure all data of the day and use the lowest point of your circadian cycle as a reference. As individuals we should always measure right after waking up even before getting out of bed. This is your true RHR without external influences. As anyone with common sense knows, any little thing as an effect on HR. From being aware of the doctor to the food you just ate or the stress of the day.

Some devices use an average of the minute. If you take a 15 second sample it will give you the immediate HR at that specific moment. Short samples can also be inaccurate as hour hearts do not beat regularly. You could be sleeping and your heart beating at 55 during 10 seconds, 61 the next 20 seconds and then drop to 51 for the reminding 30.

That's not how you measure your RHR. It has to be measured while relaxed, at the lowest of your circadian cycle and without external stimulation. If a doctor takes my pulse at 1PM, near the peak of my circadian day, after lunch, while having a conversation and enduring the stress of the moment it will easily read 90+ BPM even sitting down after 5 minutes. Cardiologists ask you to lie down for 15 minutes, close your eyes and relaxed in silence while measuring your RHR. They prefer to give you a chest strap and get your info for 24 hours in order to really get the lowest point of your RHR which should be right after waking up even before leaving your bed. During sleep your RHR goes even lower than it is right when you wake up. For instance, my RHR while sitting down calmly in the middle of the day is around 72. Measure it late afternoon it should be around 66. Lying down in bed at midnight before going to sleep if drops into the low 50s/high 40s. While sleeping it sometimes get into the low 40s. Obviously, a pulse taken during a daily consultation is absolutely worthless. The simple fact of being aware of the doctor is enough to render the entire data useless. Many things affect your HR. Hour of the day, if you just ate or not (more blood flow to digest is needed), if you had a stressful day (your blood is filled with adrenaline and other stuff), if you had a work out earlier in the day (often raises your RHR as a result of adrenaline and lasting excitement), if you slept well or not etc. This is why individuals should measure it right after waking up when all those factors are severely reduced.

Do not use the pads of your finger tips, especially when checking someone else’s heart rate. You have a pulse on your pads of your fingers so you might accidentally count yours with the patients. Always use the back of your pointer and middle finger.
@chloe210914 жыл бұрын
The pads are fine, it's tricky to feel anything with the back of the fingers and really awkward placing. Just never use the thumb as you can feel the pulse in the thumb instead of the actual one you're feeling for

Yes it doesn’t matter , however many seconds you do it for just multiply it by whatever number gets you to 60
@gabkoost2 жыл бұрын
@@danielmarquez9356 No. That's a complete lie..
@gabkoost2 жыл бұрын
No. Heart rate is often variable. In other words, it doesn't beat regularly. You could be deep in a coma and your heart will NOT beat at the same rhythm all the time. If could go 65 for the first 10 seconds, 62 for the next 10, 61 for the next 20 and 62 for the other 20. If you measure the first 10 seconds it would give you 65. If you take the entire minute it would amount to 62.
@danielmarquez93562 жыл бұрын
@@gabkoost obviously if you think of it that way then you could never get an exact beats per minute, you can do it for 1 full minute and get a certain number and then another full minute and get a different one. But what I said about counting for 5 and then multiply it by 12, or count for 10 and multiply by 6 is a way to get an estimate. Your argument makes me think your basically saying you have to be hooked up to a monitor to see it ongoing . Which is the opposite point of this video. Obviously no one has anything like that if they’re watching this.
@gabkoost2 жыл бұрын
@@danielmarquez9356 That's not quite wright. RHR per minute remains pretty stable with small variation across when you are not moving and relaxed. But if you take a small sample it can give you result completely off. Taking a small sample of a few seconds might coincide with a lower or higher frequency of a few beats. If you multiply a difference of 2 by 6 you get a discrepancy way above an acceptable estimate. This is why cardiologists let you settle down and measure you for a while. At home a minimum of 15 seconds is recommended precisely to reduce those error margins.
