In this video, we show how to identify and measure trailer leaf springs. The most common type of leaf spring is a double eye spring, there are also four types of slipper springs including a flat end, radius end, hook end, and an open eye end spring. All of these spring types are covered in the video as well as how to measure each type.

I need to locate some replacement leaf springs for my boat trailer. They are very rusted and painted, so no visible marking are present, to identify the brand/model of leaf spring. At first, I was only measureing the "open length" of the leafspring, straight across, from the center of each eye. That gave me, at best guess, 29.5". Then I measured from the center of each eye to the middle bolt, which was (at best guess) 15.5", so a combined length of 31". Which is the correct measurement, when looking for replacement leaf springs? They also have 7 leafs and are double-eye. Do I need EVERY measurement shown in the video , or only the ones I've taken so far? I don't want to buy the wrong leaf springs.

How do you make correct measurements when springs are fattened out from eye to eye on double eye springs, plus will going 1 ex. leaf hurt ?

when you say "eye size" are we talking about the bolt size that passes through? because the bushings are worn out and do the new springs come with new bushings preinstalled and can you get a higher arch than what I currently have because they too look worn out and I'd like to get trailer deck higher than the 16-17 inches and I have concerns about doing axle flip with a trailer carrying 3500 car. I like the lower level until I need to turn into a raised driveway so instead of raising trailer 6+ inches maybe 3-4 inches to keep the stability.

The size of the eye will refer to the bushing inner diameter. New springs will include new bushings. Trailer spring specs are standardised so there may not be a higher arch option available in the lengths that you need but feel free to send us an email or give us a call with your spring measurements and we will be glad to take a look.

hey great info ! My travel trailer axle just crushed my black tank...do y'all make custom springs? so I can use existing locations and hardware but have a 1 1/2 -2 inch lift to clear my tank? spring under axle set-up. don't want to do under/over.

We have the ability to modify and repair existing springs by adding or removing leaves and adding or removing arch. Unfortunately, we do not have a furnace for rolling spring eyes and we do not produce full custom packs.

How do I connect the slipper spring.and is the bolt in venter of spring tge centre of axel?

A slipper spring is only connected to the trailer by a bolt at the end with the eye. The other end slides in the hanger as the spring changes length. The center bolt of the spring is used to center it in the axle so it is important to match existing spring length to ensure a replacement spring does not move the axle location.

I have a trailer from the 80's and it needs a 26" flat slipper spring without the hook. It's impossible to find anywhere. WTH??

1200 pound springs. You will need a hoist or crane to lift the springs into position. Darn heavy!

How you supposed to measure the arch if the leafs are flat from being worn and old?? Even when the load is removed from the leafs they are for sure not where they should be sitting.. like they were overloaded from the looks but id say that after 42 years of use on a boat trailer would have a good part to play in it as well...

That said is a double eye and with the length of the arch skewed from being flattened it would put all other length measurements out.. the part the rear bolts to is not totally at a 90 but is not straight up and down either. Should measurement be based on the length when that piece is straight up and down? So when load is applied it will move it back at an angle with the give of the leafs. Part im talking about is the rear shackle that has 2 eyes and one side bolts to the axle and other to the leafs, the front side of the leafs bolt directly to a welded eye on the axle, the rear shackle is a separate piece that can move with suspension.. but the leafs are damn near about to over extend and go the other way how wavy and flat they are.. maybe theyre under rated as that rear shackle wouldnt stop any over extension like i would think it would be used for... really dont wanna have to go through it like fitting a new pully belt and buy a bunch of different sizes.. is a lighter duty single axle deal .. thinking of welding a coil pack on it and be done with it but rather put new u bolts n leafs..

Arch measurements can be used as a point of reference when comparing new springs but it will not be possible to get an accurate arch measurement from a worn out spring. It will be more important to order replacement springs of the correct lengths and capacities to make sure that the axle is not moved and clearance around the tire in the fender is adequate.

I need 4, double eye leaf springs, I need them rated between 500 and 700 lbs for a special project I am building. I also need them to be as short as possible. Do you guys have anything i can look at?

where can I buy double eye leaf springs which are 40" free length eye to eye and 2" width??? arch height about 4" or 5" number of leafs doesn't matter badly need them for my trailer

whats the weight limit per the different segments of leaf springs

The weight that each leaf can support will differ depending on the thickness of the leaf. Steel thickness is given for each of our trailer springs and this represents the thickness of each leaf in inches, e.g., .360 Inches. A thicker leaf will support more weight and the leaf composition will change depending on the part number.

how about when the leafs are broken?

If leaves are broken on one spring the other spring on the same axle can be used to measure for a replacement. If both springs on the same axle are broken, using what is left of the springs and the measurements between hangers can lead you to the correct spring length. After that it is just deciding on the needed capacity for the trailer and cargo.
