I mean it frees up space. It’s something you love or don’t like. I like it since i like column shifters. But some like floor shifters. Not here to change opinions. But that’s the reason. Unsure if they still have floor shifts for automatics.

A R I feel yeah Sports cars should have floor shifters. But normal cars like a Ford Escape should be Column shift.

I'm about to get myself this model and going from manual, I must admit this is a big concern. That stalk is used to flip wipers on (my current VW Passat) and if it rains I worry I'll put the merc into reverse meaning to use wipers.

@SIG just checked it in my rental car, 2019 B180 will happily change from D to N while driving :/. Why to re-invent the wheel? Wouldn't not buy Merc with such silly gear selector arrangement.

Douglas Oliverio you can go straight to Drive from Park without going into Neutral. Some situations require Neutral, such as car wash, or if vehicle is disabled and you need to manually push the vehicle to a new location.

Sinsector Happy New Year and i thank you for your prompt reply. can i follow up with these questions ? 1) what about from Drive mode to Reverse mode ? do i need to half push lever to engage to Neutral before full push lever to engage to Reverse ? or i can full push lever to engage lever straight from Drive to Reverse ? 2) what about from Drive mode to Park mode ? can i just press the Park button in the Drive mode or do i have to half push lever to Neutral before pressing the Park button ? i am a little confused because the Mercedes salesman told me it is best to always engage the gear back to Neutral from any initial gear engaged position (e.g. Park, Drive, Reverse) before engaging it to the next desired gear. is it necessary to do so ? Will i spoil the gear meshing / teeth should i not follow this sequence of gear engagement. Appreciate your kind clarification. Cheers.

Column shifters never have had that issue for most drivers. I doubt it’s a problem. Although that gear shifter on mercedes seems sensitive, probably an interlocking device to prevent that when driving.

if you never bump into the turn signals, then no.

With Mercedes, once you are in drive and DRIVING, you cannot shift it to reverse.

There should be a M button somewhere in the car

In the c class and glc the M button is in the centre arm rest portion of the car

and some of those cars doesn't even have another shifter except that one

While you're moving under a certain speed it will shift to whatever you accidentally select

+G M I said it will shift under a certain speed limit, so if you're going under 10 MPH then it will shift to whatever you select but anything over that it will not do anything to protect the transmission

The car wont even shift into reverse. It will tell you on the screen that you have to stop before shifting. It will just go into neutral.

@@techforever1970 it Will shift into reverse if you are moving forward, albeit below about 10 mph but still...not safe for the car. Many people accidentally mistake that stalk for the wipers and do this. Seen it happen first hand

I own a 2018 GLE400 Coupé 4Matic, and i just tried it, the car does show R on the display, but does not actually “shift” into reverse, unless you fully stop, i checked it by giving it throttle and the car just revved up. Hope this helps ;)

Henry Tang it's actually pretty ergonomic because your hands will be near the steering wheel. Also it frees up a lot of space in the center console

I drive a GLA 250, my first non-normal gearshift. I 100% recommend it, it's weird at first but becomes natural

Daniel Cox - That’s the reason I suppose that BMW still has the shifter on the console. I suppose that the reason MB relocated the shifter is to give the console a more cleaner and uncluttered appearance. With the electronic transmissions nowadays, the shifter is no longer needed on the console, but relocated on the column and the shift paddles on the steering wheel. That way, there is more room for that dial selector and touch pad.

Why? Its to leave more space in the middle of the car, and to give you more features and so on. Its better in every single way and its way easier to use than he makes it to be.
