the 3:1 is used for avoiding phase issues, not for getting a certain sound, but it's definately important.

One mike, four feet away, is perfect. Replay will sound real every time.

you should buy a stereo condenser mic if your not checking the phase between your overheads. That's why you make sure they're the same distance from the snare. Phase problems are going to cause a lot of frequencies to dip out and make things sound off

yup..the thing is that when you use to stereo pairs of mics you can pan each track left or right to get an equal sound on both sides....

These videos are great and helpful! It would be cool if you at some point could make a video about how to record your drum set on a very tight budget, because all these things you do sound great to me, but you have so many really good and expensive mics... The recording equipment is probably 5 times times the price of my whole drum set... I just want to record my drums with good quality for my band and for my youtube covers but I can't spend that much money in any way.

WWBW.com has bundle kits of sure mics. You get 3 overheads three for toms/snare and a bass mic for 400. They aslo have bundles for 300 and 200.

I think that it would good to mention or address in your video's, that most drummers are setup or are allowed to be setup, before mics are positioned. I have run into what can be an uncomfortable situation, where the engineer will set up mics to accommodate his or her mic positioning mic placement TRAINING first, and not take into account, playing comfortability.Set up first, then mic. This is very important for drummers, in that we should be very comfortable while recording. Thanks Chewewe

@Kruemel952 ...you can use 2 or better 3 microphones. One for the bassdrum and the other 2 as "overheads". Then you need a small mixer or a soundinterface (with 1 inputs per microphone) and then you are ready. It is a budget around 200,- to 400,- including interface and microphones. Here on YT are many tips and tricks for low budget solutions.

I just got a full setup for pretty cheap. Get the Pyle Pro PDKM7 mic set...it comes with kick, 2 overheads, and 4 tom/snare mics. I got an Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire (sixteen channel mixer that plugs directly into any computer...they make a USB version too if you don't have firewire), mic cables, a few stands, and Studio One Free version (PC recording software) all for $400 ish. Not saying $400 is cheap...i am on a budget too and I had to save. But compared to most professional setups...

I play at a church in a room that holds about 1,200 people. The stage is like a traditional theatre. Large catwalks and all. They say my cymbals overpower the entire system. I don't necessarily believe this. I went to school for studio recording and happen to know our system is a friggin power house! Any suggestions? They had me moon gel and tape up the cymbals Zildjian A's just to deaden the sound and humor our sound technician.
