In this video, you'll learn how to milk a sheep! Milking a sheep is not a very commonly known skill because most people don't have dairy sheep. We're used to dairy cows or dairy goats.
How to milk a ewe is something you'll need to learn if you want your own fresh sheep's milk.
I'm going to show you how to milk a sheep by hand, using different techniques to get the milk out. If you're new to milking a sheep, then this video is a great introduction.
It's important to learn how to milk a sheep by hand because you need to "strip" the milk by removing the first few squirts before you use a milking machine, if you do plan to use one. Or you may decide to stick to hand milking as well!
Whether you're milking an East Friesian sheep or you have another dairy sheep breed, you can find out more about dairy sheep here:

Thanks this was very helpful, I've milked cows a few times before and was trying to milk my ewe like that and it wasn't working. My ewe is a gem about tho she Is well behaved , I can rub Her udder pet her legs, and even trim her hooves while she stands . she even comes to me when I sit out in the pasture with her and puts her udder in my face lmao , I think she has been trying to get me to learn. Her lambs are a little over a week old now so I will try again using this method.

Hi I tried this method. Is it normal for the utter to feel hard? When I squeeze it feels like I’m squeezing a ball and I didn’t get any milk out.

If it feels really hard, it might be overfull and be hard to get out, you have to be patient. It might also be a sign of infection, so I would make sure to milk and test the milk for mastitis. Especially if the udder is hard and hot/pink.

Bacteria need water. Iodine or other solution is better for cleaning teats prior to milking. Also good to post dip with iodine or other teat end sealant after finished milking. It takes about 20 minutes for the teat hole sphincter to close after milking is finished. Best if ewe remains standing after milking. Bacteria that get on the teat end can get into the teat and cause mastitis. If mastitis occurs, take an aseptic milk sample to a vet clinic that has bi or tri plates, an incubator and a knowledgeable reader of plate growth to determine treatment that is optimal. Strip/milk out of the affected quarter as often as possible. If the ewe, nanny, cow will not rise, the mastitis has become toxic and heroics are needed. 23% calcium subcutaneously can help with muscle function due to hypocalcemia. If she is walking like a drunk, she is likely hypocalcemic.

My ewes freak out and struggle whenever I try to milk them. I gently restrain them, but they go wild the entire time, and don't let their milk down. How do I keep them calm when I'm trying to milk?

I'm so sorry to hear that! We were lucky to have ewes that were used to getting milked, and then the next generation learned the proper behavior from the older ones. From what I've seen others do, you could try: 1. Make sure you're feeding grains or giving them "treats" - I think this is about 80% of the magic 2. Hobbling - tying the legs so they don't kick or thrash 3. You can also have someone else at their head and gently talking to them or petting them, so they know they're safe 4. If you don't have a stanchion, these can be very useful You might also want to train them to go up on the stanchion or in your milking location and get treats/grains without getting milked, just so they get used to it first.

Hi, so we have 2 baby lambs (2 separate moms) am I able to Milk them or do the babies need all ?all new to me😮 also had I realized we had another who lost her baby and I didn’t do anything to milk her ( I honestly didn’t even think we could do this, I just stumbled upon it and was like hey??!!!! We have sheep hahah

You can milk share with the lambs, which means you can milk and keep some of the milk. If you're not getting a lot of milk out, it's because the baby is getting most of it. In that case, you could separate the lamb for half the day and then milk. If you milk them often, they will also increase production to a certain point, so if you can be consistent that helps too.

That is the eternal question! We milk from the side, so we can move the bucket quickly, but it's not 100%.

Thanks for sharing that Elizabeth! I think it makes sense since all mammals are similar, even humans. :) But unless you've done it and really "get the feeling" it can be tricky learn at first.
