In this video I discuss and demonstrate color mixing in its most simplest form. I give a quick over view of the color wheel and how it should influence your color mixing instincts. Then I demonstrate how I like to mix colors on my palette so I stay organized and create color harmony in my painting.

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" around Los Angeles.

Chris, you are very generous for sharing these painting instruction with others, mostly for free. Years ago I went to art school and paid good money to learn next to nothing in terms of art painting technique. And I’ve never been very comfortable painting in oils because of that experience. Thanks for sharing.

great place to get glass: All glass business' have cast off glass... offer to buy a chunk... they gave it to me for free. Perfect pieces of impact resistant heavy glass makes a fantastic palette. They even offered to grind the edges down for me and cut it to the size i thought best for my needs. They were great. Hey Chris, enjoy the channel. Commercial artist here (3d animation, 2d animation, motion graphics, graphic design), but just getting back into painting. Trying to do it every day but a few days a week at least. Watching your channel a bit recently and have to say it really has helped me get motivated (after the 8 hour day of sitting at a computer) to put loaded brush to canvas.... Thank you. 'Preciate it. Keep 'em coming.

Just found your videos a werk ago and have been watching a lot, specifically for portrait help. I'm working on one of my granddaughter and did the underpainting in burnt umber so i kept it on the palette. Then i pushed my 2 huge piles of oil color tubes aside and did my palette with your blue, red, yellow, white minimalist approach. How unstressing it is! The painting is coming along nicely and I'm having fun instead of overthinking and getting grumpy about it. Keep teaching. I will keep watching. Thank you.

Chris can I ask do you have a background as a personal trainer? I went to art school and then supported myself as a personal trainer - and a lot of your painting cues and structure remind me of how you program exercise. I really identify with the way you coach painting. Full time personal training sort of killed my art practice, but it also taught me so many lessons when I came back to art. Getting enough reps in before you do something big, periodising things in blocks, developing complimentary skills like hypertrophy training alongside a power training program, and so on. Physical heuristics for the body definitely map onto the mental heuristics needed to learn art.

when you do a portrait, do you first mix all these colors on your plate before you even start? my colors always dry out so quick, I cannot use the, when I finally get to them, maybe I should start with oils instead of acryl or is there a good way to keep the acryl mixtures wet while you paint?

maybe your using acrylic if thats the case you can get a medium from winsor and newton i think thats how they write it but its a slow drying meduim that will extent the drying time. if your using oil paint it shouldn't dry fast but you can add linseed oil. hope it helps!!

I am loving your videos, I have a question. If you use a really big pallet, how do you store your pallet so that the paints don’t dry out? Currently I work on an A4 size pallet which I can fit in my freezer but anything bigger wouldn’t work.
@elisabethherzog9369
@elisabethherzog9369 Жыл бұрын
I’m sure this is way too late and you’ve already figured it out but if not for me I find it really helpful to have a few little containers like little jars. Something that will be air tight when you close it. You can just take the paint off of your pallet with your pallet knife and put it into the container and then next time you go to paint just open up the container and put it right back on your pallet. I don’t know how helpful this is for you but its saved me a lot of paint.

Chris, I have asked you this several times you have not addressed it: What do you do with left over paint on your pallet especially if you are on a budget and can not afford to waste paint. For instance, I sat down in my basement to pain, got everything set up and paint on my pallet when, within 30 minutes, my wife is dragging me out of town for three days cuz her mom (who is wide as she is tall) fell and broke her hip. I didn't even have time to pack my stuff up we just had to go. Now I wasted all that paint, however sir, what could I have done to preserve it and not toss it out?
