Above all, a band should learn to perform as a group before getting in front of a crowd, or relying on a sound engineer. EQ on a mixer should not be used for tone shaping of instruments. The players should know enough about their craft and their gear to ensure what they're using, and how they're using it, works together in a complimentary fashion. This means learning how to set their own EQs on their amps to blend with each other. Band members who play instruments that cannot be tone-shaped ahead of the mixer, such as brass or wind, should select one that fits with the band, regardless of their personal preferences, unless they formed the band. Boutique and exotic materials may not work as well in a group to justify their uniqueness. Two guitarists using the same guitars, amps, and settings may double each other, causing a noticeable dropout when one drops out of the rhythm. Ideally they should already be set for a complimentary tone, so either one can drop out without leaving that hole. Additionally, live performers should be able to control their emotions on stage, and perform consistently without getting overly loud when they "feel the energy". Drummers hit harder, singers put more into it, guitarists bash the strings, etc. Performers should be able to control that sort of thing on their own, instead of making more work for the engineer to try and keep it all under control. A lot of people mistakenly believe that poor live sound quality is inherent to a live performance. especially in a rock band. It's actually a symptom of laziness on the part of the performers. Orchestras have proven for centuries that it's possible to sound great live. Knuckle-draggers should elevate themselves.

Would say avoid duct tape. it's not the same as gaffer tape. It's way more sticky for starters.
