In this second video about producing drums for heavy metal, Mendel looks at mixing metal drums in Cubase. After you balance drums in your mix, it’s time to take your recording to the next level by looking at how to mix metal drums. Listening to your favourite metal mixes will help to calibrate your ears before mixing. Mendel then gets into the process of mixing heavy metal drums, making sure the snare, bass drum, toms, cymbals and hi hats all perfectly complement every element of the recording. Mixing drums into a heavy metal song is an art form, but Cubase 11 is a DAW that gives you all the tools you need for a great sounding metal recording.
We hope you find this video entertaining and useful. If you like what you see, please leave a comment and tell us what you think. Thank you.

WHen you are done with the drum tracks like this, do you them bounce them to a stereo mix before mixing the entire song? Or leave them all seperated like this? hope that makes sense? Same for the guitars bass and vocals, I noticed you had all the guitars and bass as one track in this video, when you do your final mixes, is it with single tracks for all the instruments like that or do you keep them all seperated? Thanks :)

Hi Mendel. I don't know if it is a question for you or more for Steinberg. Any chance we could have this session available for download so we can follow the steps please? For me it always works better with hands on with learning. More practice, more issues, more questions, more experience. Most of the "mix together" sessions I found are pop or rock, and this is a proper metal stuff. Thanks. :)

This video was great and helped immensely with my EQ process. The only issue I'm having is getting the group to work correctly. I highlight the tracks, I click group, and it creates the group.. but when I add compressor to the group nothing changes. When I click "solo" on my group it mutes everything instead of making all the tracks in the group work. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've watched two other videos on grouping tracks in Cubase and they're doing it the same way I am. I have Cubase 11 if that makes any difference

Hi , I used to boost the high end of kick drums especially without Low pass filters too but it simply boosts with the bleeding as well . This kinda of mixing is not feasible for live drums in my experience . Also why is not there 1 single cubase 5 drum mixing tutorial on the internet?

Nice Video as always :) One question though: At kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l7lmgc5izb2ofYU.html the compressor is turned completely dry, does it have any effect on the signal then or was this just accidental?

What is it your Snare Room Sample, excuse me? I mean I understand that it must be a distant mic, aimed at the snare, but how do you get that sound? Or is it just an export from some drum plugin? Also, how do you usually place your OH mics? Do you place them closely, so they "listen" to cymbals only, or do you use them for the whole drumkit? Thanks

Thanks for video! I have a question. What if I have one part of the song like in your video and other part with blast beats. Should I use automation to change EQ and compression? Or how to solve it better?
@Mendelian
@Mendelian 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Gorelovfest1 (if this is a wink to “Gorefest” then hell yeah btw!) So If i’m correct your main question is tempo based/beat based, like if it would go from this into a 260 bpm blast beat correct? I’ve (personally) never had to change eq or compression when drums change parts (from simple beats into blast beats). No issues with compressors being to slow or such. Automation is key here in my opinion, like with fast kicks lowering their volume or perhaps upping the snare a bit during blast beats (because the hits can me softer).

Don't want to be picky but around 6:01-6:06 you have compressor to all-way dry, so there is no difference in signal if u bypass or not, yet you are with full confidence "Yeah, sounds good". Was laughing to tears =) Correct me if I am wrong, maybe I am missing something on how default cubase compressor works
@Mendelian
@Mendelian 3 жыл бұрын
It’s the other way around, i just double checked. So in the video it’s 100% compressor and you can blend in the dry signal (kind reversed compared to other plugins i agree haha).

Although i appreciate your info on this video, you're not mixing real drums. Maybe change the title to "midi drums". Mixing a real kit has way more steps.

Hey Skreamer, having mixed a lot of real drums the only difference i’d have would be the prep before mixing. So how i mix drums in this video is the same i would do with real drums. But it would indeed be a good idea to make a video of prepping real drums!

This video definitely caters to the vast majority of at-home metal musicians who use programmed drums as writing tools. Especially in these times where live recording can be difficult given the worldwide circumstance. Not everyone has the budget to record real drums as well and with drum software becoming more and more advanced this tutorial is very useful to those in that situation. There are still many tips here that are applicable to a live drum recording as well.
