mixing and recording vocals is one of the hardest things to do in music production. how can you mix well with a bad recording mic? how can you mix well with a bad singer or rapper? mixing and recording vocals comes down to a lot of things. i'm obviously still learning but this is how i mix and record vocals for my music! it comes ultimately down to compression, eq, and reverb! let me know if this video helped out! ✧ ☆

Its amazing how long Ive gone without knowing how to properly mix vocals. So many misconceptions about what things do and how they work. VERTICAL VS HORIZONTAL. Immediately after building a chain with this method, not even getting into tweaking, everything is 1000% better. Like a completely new microphone. So effective. And You Yourself laid everything out so concisely. I was able to build everything exactly the way I wanted, right off the bat, first go, completely understood. Ive got to say, I'm a fan of Reid Stefan as well, RPITG. But I feel you nailed this one as far as general usability goes. I don't really do things in the same genre or style. but I still took so much out of the lesson. more-so than from his Sauce videos. Exceptional Content. Would Recommend. Big Subscribe 10/10

Hey man! Awesome videos, thanks so much! I'm wondering about the other effects you don't specifically get into (like the saturators and chorus on the reverb chains), are those important or just up to personal choice? Also...any advice on reducing CPU load? Just by making this rack, mine's hitting over 100% :(
@xole
@xole 4 жыл бұрын
yeah those extra audio effect are just a personal choice. i'll switch them around in every song to get what i want. a way I reduce CPU load when recording vocals: i export the beat and then bring it into a new project. be sure to match the bpms! but this helps limit the plugins and audio effects you are using for your beat. from there i just throw in the vocals template on a new track :) hope this helps!
@spencercampbell1460
@spencercampbell1460 4 жыл бұрын
Do you record then put the effects on? Because if i just have the effect template on a empty vocal track i’m getting a bunch of white noise. Any ideas? Great video btw thank u so much!

But I am a little new to Abelton so I have a few questions I'm pretty young so I don't have a good mic all I have is just headphones/earbuds but not an actual mic is that still okay to record? Also Can you do a beginners tutorial on how to make vocals sound better? How does scanning an EQ help making th vocals sound better? By scanning it how do you know when it doesnt sound as good? Sorry for all the questions i was just wondering

great video fam! wanted to know if u copied all the same effects to each vocal track or do u just have them on the group channel to affect all of them at once and only add extra eqs/effects on the certain vocal channels you want tweaked differently? hope that makes sense thanks
@xole
@xole 4 жыл бұрын
sometimes i have them all grouped and only have one template on the group. i only do this if all of the tracks are going to sound the same. i separately put templates on tracks when i want them to sound different because usually if i want to change the sound i would do it by adding extra audio effects after the template. if you want to make some tracks different from the others you would need the template on each track. hope this makes sense! lmk if you have any other questions :)

love the video man, im still very new to music production but its tough doing it all by myself. im determined to drop a song in the next month and I was wondering if you could help me figure out how this artist ryan caraveo makes his vocals in the song "deceived". Ive got no idea how to do that and thats the kind that I need to learn, ive got ableton suite but all of the tools it came with is overwhelming, dont exactly know where to start although this video is one of the best tutorials ive found so far so im hoping id understand better from you if you showed how to do ryans vocals in that song. thanks tho man liked and subscribed !
@xole
@xole 4 жыл бұрын
thanks so much for the sub and I’m glad the video helped :) for the “deceived” song it sounds like his vocals for the verses are pretty simple. just limit your reverb to get a clearer vocal track. for the chorus, it sounds like he keeps his regular vocals from the verses but also adds another track on top of that. on the other vocal track he is just singing the same lines but an octave higher. it also sounds like he has some distortion on it, try ableton’s overdrive or amp to get that distortion. hope this helps!

Great video. I'm a little confused about why you would have multiple different compression chains running simultaneously with your dry signal. Chaining makes sense to me for the effects like reverb and delay but I always thought of compression as a way of cleaning up the core, "dry" track and then having that signal sent through all of your separate effects. Could you explain that a little bit?

@xole

good point! if there’s a part when my vocals are too quick to fine tune by chopping, i just re-record that section until i have something that i like. i’ll record the part and hear my vocals back with the pitch correction. hearing it back will show me what notes i need to hit for that part and then i’ll just re record until i get something i like. hope this helps!

@xole
@xole 3 жыл бұрын
yeah I recommend bouncing your beats into a new project when recording vocals! so export your beat and then open up a new project and drag your exported beat into the first track. this means when you record vocals, the only track with audio effects will be your vocals track! the track with the beat will not have any audio effects on it! hope this helps! and thanks for watching :))

bro what autotune did you use? a stock one in ableton??? and did you manually change it? and i use autotune pro without using graphing mode i need to use autotune during a recording bc my singing sucks but i dont understand why my vocals arent as good as an autotune i use on my roland jdxi...when i activate the compressor in it, it sounds better. when i sing i feel my voice is smoother and i can have that post malone beautiful goat sounding effect but with autotune pro i can still do it but not as easy....its so confusing bc I feel more confident with a cheap autopitch and compressor on my 500 dollar roland jdxi keyboard than the 500 dollar auto tune....only downside is when i use the autopitch on my keyboard into fl studio its really muddy bc im using a microphone and i have to talk really loudly into and using an eq, with the built in compressor is such a pain. its so frustrating man ik i have some cool tunes to share but i havent put anything out because my voice isnt where i want it to be with autotune pro and my mixing and mastering isnt that good ik i need to learn but why tf does my autopitch and compressor make me sound so much better than autotune pro like what the fuck.... the high notes are so difficult and it really punishes me when i mess up a note.... FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah mautopitch is obviously no where near the best or professional because it's free. i feel like it works just fine though. i would try to learn a little bit of music theory before throwing autotune everywhere because if you don't know the key of your song: your autotune will sound absolutely awful. my voice has never been good, if you listen to my songs on my youtube soundcloud you would know too, so i just rely on all the effects that i showed in this video! i would just give it a shot and follow this video pretty closely and your voice will sound more professional. there is obviously nothing i can teach you to help your voice because your voice is definitely better than mine lmao. i would just say do a couple of vocal warm-ups before you sing. hope this helps! sorry about your situation!

Bro I used to use the autopitch on my Roland jdxi and I felt the song better bc my vocals sounded smoother but with autotunepro it’s really gross honestly is so weird I think it’s too advanced for me I’m not even tryna learn how to do the manual mode smh but that auto pitch sounds good af compared to my vocals dude you manually fixed the vocals though right ? Cause it sounded so smooth in the video lmao gaw damn that’s almost how my voice sounds on the jdxi. I’m about to try it out but autopitch and autotune are completely different then I looked it up and I even questioned why my jdxi said “autopitch” instead of “autotune” hmmmmm weird right ????? I’m still searching for more info but I might just try and figure out a way to use the autopitch on my keyboard with a better microphone.... maybe find a condensed microphone that will be able to work without phantom power. Thanks for the tips though bro!

@@andycarrillo48 yeah man it sounds like you have an absolute powerhouse of autotune. it's going to take a while to learn how to use that effectively lol. the autotune i use is super simple that's why i have to drench my vox with effects lol but once you get the hang of effects you be good to go!

Do soundcloud rappers starting out actually do all this or just throw on the autotune? I’m new and this seems really hard for me.
@xole
@xole 4 жыл бұрын
yes soundcloud rapper usually don’t mix their vocals and just throw on auto tune and maybe some reverb. that’s usually why their tracks aren’t that special. following this tutorial will really level up your vocals tho!!

xole Thanks for the reply! I was wondering how xxxtentacion was able to do the distortion and stuff on his screaming before he got all this production knowledge. I doubt just autotune and reverb can do that, right? I’m new to all this. I have Ableton live lite thanks to my mpk mini, a mic, and an interface. I watch a lot of tutorials but it’s still hard for me. How do I get beats from websites like Beat Stars into Ableton and record over them? And is it different recording screams than just singing? I know this is a little long but I would really appreciate your help!

@@spiderpunk1265 i would start off looking up free type beats online. so if you want to go for a certain style just type in "free (artist's name) type beat" and you should be able to use those free beats! to get xxx's distorted vocals i would suggest playing around with ableton's overdrive audio effect.

xole thx man you’re a real one. I also need help on how to get those beats into ableton cuz I can’t find a video on it. And I have the lite version so will that work? You’ve been so helpful dude appreciate it.

@@spiderpunk1265 try using a website that lets you turn youtube videos into mp3 files! then just go to your files and drag the audio into ableton! make sure the youtuber said the beat is free though :)

I don't understand how you can make a mix on canton if you can only make 12 return shipments, that's too little to do a thorough process, I like this daw but that stops me from editing it, I even downloaded the demo but I don't know how to do it since I come from samplitude x4 pro and as you know the workflow is different, if you could get me out of the bind and give me some reference that you can do something else.

You don't need too many returns if you know how to use the Ableton Audio effect rack. N that's something really good about ableton.

You might have Ableton Lite not the regular Ableton 10. After I upgraded to a regular license I got the other EQ plus a bunch of other stuff.
