Welcome back to sketchup 101. Today is a great beginner/intermediate build. If you've never used sketchup before..here's a good place to start.
If you have any questions, leave a comment and I'll do my best to keep up with them, and don't forget to check out the actual build video for the workbench: kzfaq.info?o=U&vide...

This is a great tutorial! I decided to try modeling a dining table on SketchUp this week after listening to your podcast, and now I'm in love with the idea of tweaking designs virtually before ever starting the build. Awesome tool.

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great kzfaq.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

Wow, this was a fantastic tutorial Mike - quite entertaining as well! I had absolutely had no experience with Sketchup, but after watching this and fumbling around for a few hours I was able to sketch up the design for my 13yr old son's desk we're gonna build together. Thank you so much for helping me learn a new skill!

When you're making the table top, instead of continually copy and pasting the 2x4s you could have used the Move tool, hold Option when you move it to make a copy, after you start moving type "1.5 10x " this will move it over 1.5" (so it lines up directly beside the original one) and then 10x will make 10 copies each 1.5" further along the same axis.

Nice tutorial! I didn't know about the selection, so thanks for that tip! Another quick tip is that you can use the move tool to copy an object, that way you can copy and position it correctly at the same time, saving a step. You do it by tapping the option key on the mac (or control on win/linux pc) while moving the piece. For the top, you can "copymove" the first 2x4 to the other end and fill in the rest by typing a slash and a number, like /10, that will distribute 9 more 2x4s between the first and the last copy. But that works if you did the math, first of course, so you know how many 2x4s you'll need in advance. If you don't, like in your case, you can just copymove it right next to the first one and type star and a number, like *10, and that will copy 10 2x4s right next to each other. Cheers!

Great job - save yourself a step by holding alt/option to copy and move at the same time. It’s a common function with Mac apps. Option + drag makes a duplicate. Thanks for all your great shares - keep up the great work.

Thanks for the great info Mike. Been teaching myself sketchup for a while and I just learned more in the past few minutes than in the past couple years. Just found out recently that free sketchup is now all online but I still sometimes use the old 2017 version because I can't find all the tools that were in the desktop version. I can also get very limited use of the online version on a mobile device but as I said, it's very limited. Maybe someday you can address that once you master it. I'll see what I can learn at this end

If you know what you want to make and you just need to get a model, sketch up would work. But if you want to iterate and change dimension and play with sizes, Fusion would be a lot easier. It does have a higher learning curve but its much more powerful.

I hear ya. Guy going so fast, if you are a beginner, you would have to pause it. One thing that gets me on sketchup is how different the windows version is. You would think the front end of the program would look and run the same. But it's not, and all these vids out here are using apple. Not an apple fan, so tutorials are ok, but finding the buttons sometimes is a challenge.

You don't need to explode a component to make it editable. In fact, it's often not a good idea, since it could cause the content to merge with anything it's adjacent to that's not isolated in its own group or component. Instead just double-click the component and you can edit the contents. Click outside to exit the component, and prevent accidental further editing. All this is the same for groups as well.

this is a pretty good tutorial. but you skip a lot of short cuts, for example to get rid of your reference lines can click the edit menu and select delete guides. also for th legs there are programs or"extensions" you can add to streamline that. i have a mirror tool what will do those steps in a couple of clicks. good video tho. love listening to your modern maker podcast

What version of Sketchup is this? I'm completely brand new to Sketchup and have played around a little with the basic free version - seems incredibly cumbersome and tedious. Just one difficulty is there seems to be no way to even scale a drawing - it seems to want to work in something like whole house size. I just want to design some small projects for now. To begin I thought I'd keep it simple by designing a pair of sawhorses, but I can't scale it down to something like 36-in. for a width. I just discovered that there is a so-called "Shop" version but apparently it's not free. Is this what I need?
